deck, I decided to break out my “power” deck and play. I have four decks 1.5 decks that have let me go 4-0 on a consistent basis. The first one I ever managed a mini-streak with was a GRB version of Fires powered up with dual lands. I’ve lent that deck out a few times in the last year and it has never done worse than 3-1. The next deck I did well with was a WW deck with Land Tax

is a deck that rewards a patient player and I have tons of reserves of patience. It is a horribly frustrating deck to play against once the lock comes down and my version was not one with anything like a quick kill (I won quite a few games by decking via Feldon’s Cane – I’m an accountant by training and am quite content to win slowly if need be).

I really like those three decks, but no deck gives me the same feeling of control and power like Super-Gro. I have only gone 3-1 once when playing it. Every other time I have gone 4-0 with it, often winning all eight games. The time I went 3-1 was a 1-2 match against a version of “The Rock” that managed to Dust Bowl

The local store runs Type 1.5 3 Sundays a month (all but the first Sunday which is draft). We had 30 people for the November 30th event, and it was the normal 4 rounds of age modified Swiss. The store draws a fair number of 13 and younger players, almost all of which do not have close to power decks. We split the tournament into 2 age groups, under 14 and 14 and over, in order to increase the fun factor for the younger players. Because we only run 4 rounds and then depend on DCI reporter to spit out the tie breakers, one of the younger guys is usually in to top 4 of the tournament and every once and a while one “wins” with the best 4-0 tie breakers. This increases the fun factor for all the younger players and they keep coming back and buying packs. To tell you the truth, it increases the fun factor for the older players as well because we get paired up against more mature players with better decks.

I’m not too sure how much detail I should go into in explaining how this deck plays. It was very popular last year during Extended season as it beats Trix. If I understand the history of it properly, Alan Comar (a Pro player that is now working for Wizards of the Coast) came across a version that was being played in France. He modified it, it did well, and then multiple versions of it started showing up all over the place. I prefer versions that splash for White, but there are pure UG versions as well.

The short version on how to play this deck is:

1) Develop your board position

2) Counter whatever needs countering (stop your opponent from developing their board position)
3) Draw cards

4) Win with a large Threshold creature or two or a very big Quirion Dryad

The longer version boils down to the 4 items above, but I do get a fair amount of e-mail from players who are new to Type 1.5 so I’ll explain it in more detail.

This deck abuses the undercosted threshold creatures and free counters. It has the added bonus of being able to play Quirion Dryad

is land, but you get a choice about what land you want to draw.

You need to be willing to take damage and be comfortable playing at a low life total in order to play this deck well. It is very, very common to be under 5 life when you win.

It may seem like you have a lot of counter magic, but you have to make sure you use it only when you have to. Use your 20 points of life to save to save the counters for your opponent’s “I win” spells. Creatures should be dealt with by StP or your own, beefier creatures. Just about the only time I consider countering an early creature is against Sligh and that’s just because the early 2-6 damage they do often makes the difference between them burning you out or you winning the race.

. They basically serve the same purpose but the Heaths cannot be countered. They also do not have the disadvantage of having to reveal your hand. The life point or two you have to give up may make a big difference in your games against Sligh or several of the other Weenie decks.

Match 3 – Randal Droher playing Reanimator

It isn’t a surprise to me that I’m facing another one of the good players in the store as we’re both 2-0 at this point. Randal had borrowed the deck and wasn’t super fond of the build. I had a poor experience running Reanimator a few weeks back (funny how I never seem to write tournament reports when I really do poorly). The main issue is paying lots of life when Sligh is so damned good in 1.5.

Game 1 I countered the right spells at the right time and then pounced all over him with big creatures. It came down to me drawing a decent opening hand and him not being able to disrupt me. I think he brought out a Visara to deal with me Mystic Enforcer

My Black creatures were much better than my Red creatures and I should have played 3 colours. I looked at the top decks in the Grand Prix and almost all of them were running three colours. GP Reims was somewhat of a revelation. I never would have predicted that Sligh would be so over represented. I would have thought that Reanimator would have caused much bigger problems for Sligh, but there was a dearth of Reanimator decks in the top 64.

I’m guessing that UG Madness, Psychotog, The Rock, and Sligh will be over represented in local PTQs. I’m basing this on the fact that newer players will have most if not all of the cards for those decks. They’re also a little easier to play than Oath.

I’m not sure what I’ll be playing, but I do hope to make all three of the SF Bay area PTQs.
