CardShark Content - Michael Potter (4/15/2003)

I have been traveling a lot over the past few weeks (NYC, Asia, and then Florida on vacation) and then the super busy season at work hit me (10-K, Annual report, etc.), so I haven’t been playing much Magic. I did get to meet Seth Burn for lunch (two accountants sitting together and chatting about a variety of topics) and play a few casual games in Neutral Ground NY one night (I didn’t get in on time to play in the Sunday Type 1 tournament).

I’ve mentioned before that I’m very weak at Sealed Deck. I went 0-4 in the last Sealed PTQ, which continued my streak of being a poor Sealed player. I made a few play errors as well during those games. At least 2 of the people who beat me had very high ratings so I shouldn’t go too far below 1600 in Limited after that showing (down to 1610). The tournament was good in the fact that all my opponents were pleasant and the better players actually showed me the mistakes I made which will help the next time I play.

This is an area I really should work harder at since so many PTQ’s are Sealed Deck.

I recently got a chance to meet Marcus Anderson (the editor here) when he came out to the SF Bay area for vacation. I felt extra guilty that I haven’t had much time to write recently. We had a great turnout for the monthly draft tournament with a record 32 players showing up at Pleasanton Sports Cards.

Type 2 Discussion

I have played a little Type 2 (FNM) and have been playing different versions of Tog. The first week that Legions was legal, the store had a decent number of decks trying to abuse Graveborne Muse. Tog, and UG still seemed to be the top decks. GR seems to be able to beat Tog most of the time (winning 2-1) but it loses to AstroSlide (which is also pretty popular). So far, the metagame seems to still be pretty open.

I won a recent FNM using a version of the Cabal Cemetery deck that can be found in this article:

http://www.starcitygames.com/php/news/expandnews.php?Article=4618

This was the list I used:

It is a mono-Black deck that relies on recurring creatures to burn out its opponents (it can beat down as well). There is an active discussion of it here:

http://www.brainburst.com/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=75442

(as an aside, I find it amusing that a deck featured in an article on Star City Games is most actively discussed in the Brainburst forums).

This deck is pretty strong against Tog and does OK against GR and UG (this is a general statement as it does really depend on the build). Compost

is very bad news when playing against GR as it lets them draw and draw and draw. WRG Slide has been a very bad match for me when playing this deck.

I have used it twice (3-1 and 4-0). The one loss was against GR and I made a huge play error in it. If I had played it correctly, I would have had a draw instead. My match-ups have been lucky with 4/8 being against Tog.

My little play-testing group has been exploring the “Tier 1” decks. So far the general consensus is that the different GR builds are particularly strong. The stats from the different Regionals that are showing up have GR winning a good number of slots. From the very scattered reports I have seen (doesn’t seem to be too many tournament reports out there), GR is being played in fairly high numbers. That makes it harder to justify running Tog and makes the case for Astral Slide

-based decks much stronger.

I’m not sure what I’ll be running for Regionals yet. I’ll be going to Nationals this year almost for sure because it is on the West Coast and fairly easy for me to get to. Plus it is my birthday weekend, so maybe I’ll get lucky in the grinders if I can’t secure a slot via Regionals.

I do know that GRW Slide is doing very well at my local store. It beats Tog on a fairly regular basis.

I am working on a couple of “rogue” decks, so it will be interesting for me to see if I play one of them (and go 3-5) or play a Tier 1 deck (and probably go 3-5 and that’s what I seem to like to do at Regionals).

Vintage (with a deck and report)

I played in my first Type 1 tournament the other week. I went to C&J’s Collectibles in Newark, CA. It was a pretty good turnout with 26 players. They run a tournament every Thursday night, so I suggest that you check it out if you’re interested in Type 1 and in the SF Bay area. Type 1.5

www.themanadrain.com has opened up their Type 1.5 board for general posting. The board currently has a great number of deck listings. One very common request I get via email is for listings and now there is an online source where you can comment and question as well.

My local store, Pleasanton Sports Cards continues to hold Type 1.5 tournaments every Sunday but the first Sunday of the month. I’ve missed a fair number of them recently due to family commitments, but I have managed to play in a few of them.

Sometimes I just need to play a theme deck. I’ve always liked Goblins and I thought I would give them a whirl. I threw this deck together in about 5 minutes. It has a pretty solid core in the burn, the Goblins are just a way to bring my opponent into burn range.

I put three styles of Sligh into one deck to see what each flavour would be like. Fast Goblins, good burn, and Ankh of Mishra

I have two common sayings I go by when play Sligh. First – look at your opening hand and see how close to 20 damage you can count. The closer you get, the more likely it is that you should keep it. The second in that Sligh is a “control” deck. When your life is above zero and theirs is at or below zero, you have all the control of the game you need.

My plan is almost always the same. I want to do 8 points of damage with my creatures and then burn my opponents out. Many new Sligh players get overly excited about the high quality burn. Most games are won because of the early creature damage.

I decided to use Goblins as my creature base. The biggest decision I had to make was whether or not to play Goblin Goon

is good against decks that play land. Some decks play far more lands than others. The more they play, the better it works. My opponents often stranded land in their hands because they couldn’t afford any more damage and many decks need as much mana as possible.

Both the games were won by a horde of Goblins attacking for the win with a little burn at the end to finish Jim off.

in my graveyard in order to break the Dragon cycle that would have killed him. I was lucky he didn’t go get a bounce spell as bouncing the Ankh would have won the game for him.

I won my 2nd game due to the Ankh and due to massive damage and a poor draw by Tyler.

Sligh-style decks are usually poor against combo. Their main advantages are speed and consistency (because they use low casting cost threats and are mono-coloured). If you know you’re facing a combo-deck, be sure to mulligan aggressively to get the right opening hand. Sideboard in whatever hate you can for the combo. Understand that if you do not win very quickly, the combo will go off and you’ll lose. Be resigned to losing against most combo decks but play properly – you’ll win many, many more matches than you’re “supposed” to. I beat an “Army of Squirrels” deck that ran multiple Walls several times with this deck and it is supposed to be a very bad match-up.

is the key card in the mirror match (or against other Sligh decks), but you need the land to have enough mana to cast your spells and activate the Scroll. Do not forget to hold at least 1 card in hand and don’t forget that you can activate the Scroll at the end of your opponent’s turn and then again in your upkeep before you draw a card.
