CardShark Content - Michael Potter (6/3/2003)

I traditionally do very poorly at Prereleases (and Sealed Deck in particular). Part of the problem has been poor card pools. Well, to be honest, part of the problem has been poor deck construction. There isn’t much you can do about getting a poor card pool, but I have been trying to work on my deck construction skills. Like it or not, Sealed Deck is one of the most common PTQ formats.

I know that many writers insert lively stories on the drive to the Prerelease with detours, tunes, and other assorted diversions. I live about a 40 minute drive from the site of the SF Bay area PTQs/Prereleases and it is all highway driving on a route that I know pretty well. I guess I could have car trouble or something vaguely out of the ordinary happen, but the drive is pretty straightforward and boring. So David Birks swings by my place, we get into my car and pick up Jim Garritano and we head off on the 40 minute drive and discuss the spoiler.

The MTGnews spoiler has been pretty helpful to me in the past. I didn’t have that much time to study the one for Scour

Remove target enchantment from the game. Search its controller's graveyard, hand, and library for all copies of that card and remove them from the game. That player then shuffles his or her library.
ge, but I had read all the way through it. Some players don’t like to read the spoiler before a Prerelease as a big part of the fun is the surprise of seeing the new cards for the first time. I’m not that type of player. I do better in Constructed formats because preparation really helps. Unless you run into a rogue deck, if you study and play test against the known good decks, you’ll tend to not be surprised in a tournament. I try and replace my OK but not great play skills with that extra bit of studying and the spoiler lists are my means to do that for Prereleases.

We arrive at the Hyatt Ricky’s in Palo Alto with plenty of time to spare (I’m one of those types of people that vastly prefers to arrive early than late. I don’t like to push time envelopes at all). We were in a different room than normal. It was much better lit, but somewhat smaller. They had a turnout of just over 400 people for the first flight and had to scramble around to get extra tables set up. I had pre-registered (as I tell my local group, pre-registering for major events is tech), so I spent almost no time in a line and passed time playing MBC against Tog. Eventually, they got the main line cleared out and the extra tables set up and Don Barkauskas (the head judge) gave his normal speech at the beginning.

Don has been the head judge of just about every PTQ-level event that I have gone to since I started playing just over 2 years ago (Toby has done a couple of the others). He announced at Regionals a few weeks ago that he was finishing graduate school and would be going off into the real world so the Prerelease would be his last head judging event in the SF Bay area (I’m assuming that it means that he’s moving out of the area). I’ve always thought that he has done a good job running the judging staff at the events I have gone to. I forgot to walk over and tell him that when I was done at the Prerelease, so I’m putting it into this report. He is going to be a very good head judge wherever he ends up.

The biggest change compared to previous Prereleases was the announcement that they would not be doing deck swaps nor would we be registering decks. They also cut down the top prizes and spread the prizes deeper. This was to try and balance out the risk of people cheating by reducing the overall reward for winning the event. I like the thinking behind this, but I’m reasonably sure that the event turned into more of a “Team Sealed” event as the rounds went on and people started trading cards back and forth. From what I understand, Wizards will be knocking Prereleases down to 8K with no deck registration and swapping for future Prereleases. Since Prereleases have the highest number of casual players that attend no other PTQ or similar tournaments, I understand the desire to make it run as easily as they can for the more casual players. Hopefully this will not lead to rampant cheating in the future as that might turn off the casual players more than making the clerical procedures easier for them will make them like it more.

It took quite a while to get the cards, but they finally were handed out and this is what I received:

Without a doubt, this was the best set of cards I had ever opened. It isn’t super amazing (no real bomb Rares), but there were more than 2 colours that had enough good cards in them. I came fairly close to playing a UW deck because of the large numbers of flyers that I had between the two, but I was very concerned of the lack of removal (with the exception of White which had a couple of cards that would do in a pinch). Instead I went GB. A combination of fat, some removal, and Oversold Cemetery

Round 2 - Dave Kattleman

didn’t help. I won the match 2-0.

The interesting part of the match, for me, wasn’t the games themselves, but an exchange that showed me that I’m definitely not a casual player. Dave had mulliganed and then drew 7 cards by placing them one the table in front of them. He grabbed the cards and picked them up. He realized that he had 7 cards and put them down right away. I told him that the normal procedure in this case was a forced mulligan down to 5. He was upset with me over that and started to argue that he hadn’t really picked the cards up all that much and hadn’t seen them. I stopped arguing and called for a judge.

In the end the judge (Conan, the TO) made Dave put the last card drawn back on top of his library and had us start from there. Since they were running the tournament as a REL 1 8K event and since they were trying to cater to more casual players, he decided to enforce the lowest level possible for the procedural error.

Prereleases are supposed to be more casual and I’ve played quite a few. I’m always torn when playing against an opponent that is unsure of the rules or is making errors that are quite serious in a higher REL tournament. I’m pretty sure I pissed of Dave by the discussion on the extra card. I prefer my opponents have fun when playing against me, and calling Dave on the mulligan/drawing extra cards meant that he didn’t have as much fun as he could have.

I know I did the right thing in calling over a judge once we started arguing, and I know that I should play reasonably tight with the rules even at a Prerelease. I’m wondering what else I can change in my play style to make these sort of situations a little less painful.

I also might be reading too much into it and his frustration may have come more from my deck manhandling his deck more than anything else.

Round 3 – John Hunter playing BR

John plays at my local store and has dropped by a few times for Wednesday night practice sessions. I was already pretty pumped at this point because I had already started better than any other Prerelease I had gone to.

Game 2 was a complete rout. I’m not sure what he was drawing (other than land), but my army of creatures grew and grew and kept swinging. I ended the game at 20 life.

turned out to be much better than I thought it would be.

I was pretty happy at this point. I really wanted to test Team Sealed that week and 3-1-1 would win 6 packs. I just needed a win or a draw in my next 2 rounds and I would have the packs I needed.

at Pleasanton Sports Cards

If any story about driving down to the area of Matchplay would be boring, the under 5 minutes drive to my local store would be even less noteworthy. I could consider writing about the temptation to go a block out of the way and visit Starbucks on the way to play, but I find that Starbucks charges way too much for their coffee and I will never go there again.

I had actually spent the morning in San Ramon at the Kite and Wind festival teaching my 6-year old daughter how to fly a kite. The kite my wife had bought was a little too heavy and complicated for the amount of wind that was blowing so we picked up a $2 kite from Toys-R-Us the next day and my daughter’s now an “expert” kite flyer. After she got her confidence up (the cheap bat-winged kites need almost no breeze at all and they leap into the air), I was able to get her to fly the nicer kite with the long tail.

That was sort of what I have been doing wrong in the past when it came to Sealed deck building. I was trying to be all tricky and use advanced, constructed level techniques with the inferior card pool of a Sealed deck. I’m now going back to the basics:

1) Sealed deck is almost always determined by your creature base
2) Sealed is generally slower than even draft and you can usually get away with playing more high casting cost threats
3) With the number of Morphs in the environment, decks that rely on “swarms” of small creatures do not work as well as they did in previous sets
4) You need some plan to deal with the common “bombs” – I rate these as Wellwisher

I decided that a lower cost creature rush deck with a little burn to finish my opponent off was the best plan. I didn’t like it because all too often I had used that plan only to have Morphs and Fat stop my little creatures cold and then I was forced to watch my life totals go down in big increments.

I was hoping that a combination of Sparksmith

and Sharpshooter would clear the way of early creatures and let me keep pushing damage through. Sulferic Vortex was an experiment to see if 2 points of damage a turn combined with my little creatures would make a difference. I usually boarded it out for Goblin Warstrike. I played 16 lands in order to get one more creature into the deck. Wellwisher

I also mentally prepared myself for bad combat trades in order to force damage through. Much like I play Sligh except my burn wasn’t anywhere near as good.

Round 1 Eric Drach playing G/R

Eric looked a little nervous playing me early. Eric’s a strong player but he makes mistakes when he gets nervous and puts pressure on himself. I start off well but he wrecks me with a Zombie Cutthroat

to do 11 of the 12 remaining points of damage and then finish him off with burn. Game 3 Eric gets a sub-standard start, I make him reveal his Cutthroat without wasting a valuable creature attacking. and also made me glad that I’ve played many, many games of WW and Sligh as I was conditioned to make poor combat trades when I needed to get damage through to win the game.

Round 2 Matt Blackburn playing UR

The two game since this match prove that when your opponent gets mana screwed in one game and then mana flooded in the other and you have no such issues, you win. The first game was a little interesting as I have to keep using Sparksmith

meant I was at 29 life when the game ended. Game 2 he had a crummy draw and I had the Sligh draw and attacked relentlessly for the win.

Matches 3-0, games 6-1

Round 4 David Kirsher playing GR

I mulliganed in game 1, drew 7 cards and picked up the cards without looking at them. I then mulliganed to 5 and had no land. So I started with 4 cards and only one land. David had a slow deck and I actually lived for quite a while and saw a little bit of his deck before I conceded to his overwhelming board position. It was his turn in game 2 to have lots of trouble getting going (his deck was pretty slow) and I played lots of 2/2’s and attacked every chance I had.

Game 3 was very interesting. I got myself up to 22 life via Wellwisher

Team Sealed

I’ve managed to complete 2 Team Sealed practices and will be writing my next article on the experience so far. If you have any tips or observations on the format, please email them to me and I’ll try them out.

US Nationals

My ticket and hotel is booked so I’ll be there trying to grind in. Even though I’m a confident guy, I appreciate the fact that there are plenty of side events for those that don’t make it. I’ll probably join in the Type 1 tournament if I don’t make the main event.

Patrick Roy

Seth Burn isn’t the only accountant that likes to talk about sports every once and a while. I’ll keep this brief as I haven’t earned the same indulgence that he has with his years of good writing. I’m from Montreal and grew up in Quebec. Patrick Roy is the same age as me. Guy Lafleur was my childhood hockey hero. Patrick Roy was my hero when I was old enough not to be so immediately emotional about it. I’m going to miss watching him play. I’ll be wearing my #33 Habs jersey at Nationals in honor of “Saint Patrick”.

I like Martin Brodeur quite a bit as well so I’m cheering for the Devils right now (plus I lived in NJ when I first moved to the USA and have very fond memories of living there).
