CardShark Content - Michael Potter (9/13/2005)

Extended is getting closer and closer to the rotation. Oct 20th says goodbye to the cards that have defined Extended for me for the almost 5 years I’ve been playing (started with Planeshift). There was a GPT for GP: Beijing (in case you’ve missed it, I live in Singapore now).

There are 2 decks I really like that are taking hits from the rotation. Draco

After a few minutes’ reflection, I decide that I want to try to kill people with Akroma and pull together the same list I used in a PTQ at GP: Singapore (I went 4-1-1 and missed top 8 due to tie breakers).

I had done a hard look at what to use in Reanimator at the start of the last PTQ season:

Reanimation targets (pre-Champions block – I’m going to update in a follow-up article for the new Extended)

I looked through all the Reanimator decks from PT Columbus and made a list of what creatures were used. In my mind, you want size (at least 5/5, 6/x is better), speed (haste), and evasion (trample, flying, fear) as the main attributes.

Most popular targets:

Attacking doesn’t cause Akroma, Angel of Wrath to tap.

6/6, flying, haste, trample, first strike, doesn’t tap to attack, and pro Black and Red make this the absolute best target. If nothing else is attacking and your opponent is taking no damage from pain-lands, this is a 4 turn clock. Great on defense as well.

This was the version that made T8 (lost to Desire in the quarter-finals and he finished 5th). The only problem with Rorix is that he can be killed by burn or targeted Black removal. He doesn’t have Trample, so small flyers can chump block him.

Unlike Rorix, these three Dragons do not have Haste. However the 6 toughness does make them harder to kill by RDW and their abilities can help lock down your position in that you can bounce, force discard, or get extra tokens for Edict protection. I don’t think they’re as good as Rorix, but you may want to test them to see. They are 6/6 flyers and their abilities are reasonably good.

. My experience showed me that bounce seems more important than Discard. I might be wrong there, but there were few times in my games where I wanted Discard instead of Bounce.
The GPT was at Comics Mart at the Serene Centre. BDM quoted me in his regular column on Wizard’s site on how difficult it can be to play outside in the heat. The locals think I’m a wimp about it, but it is all what you’re used to. I grew up in Montreal and I’d love to drop some of them downtown in the middle of the winter and see how they handle what I thought was normal. Serene Centre (and Suntec) is nothing like that. The tournaments are indoors there and are as comfortable as a Magic tournament can be.

I lose game 2 due to another play error. When I sideboard, I somehow put 61 cards main deck and leave 14 in the sideboard. Sunny counted my deck game 1, so I know that he’s going to check. I did count my sideboard and I thought there were 14 there. My error, should have counted my own deck. The sleeves I’m using are very stiff, so I’m sure I counted an empty sleeve as a card.

We play a couple of games for fun and my deck easily handles his. This is fairly draw dependant, but my Bounce makes his decisions much more difficult.

I’m more than a little annoyed at myself at this point. Bad error in my first round. Another bad error in round 2. I head down to McDonalds with Sunny and a couple of his friends and calm down over lunch. I decide to play as tight as I can and get ready for round 3 with much more of a game face on.

Round 3 – Yi Lu

Yi Lu playing Vial Goblins

This is the match-up I put the Nishobas in for. You really prefer Akroma, but Rorix doesn’t block and only has 5 toughness which isn’t all that hard to be killed. Goblins is a popular deck and Nishoba isn’t much worse than other choices for the creature slot.

I won the die roll, and started with an opening hand with Show and tell, enough mana and Nishoba. Normally not a keeper if I know I’m playing against Goblins, but not terrible overall. He opens up with a Mountain

in my hand, but the Nishoba is down to 4 counters and I haven’t seen any sign of any Reanimation yet plus there’s nothing worth mentioning in my graveyard. I decide to not kill off the Goblins in play and pass the turn. While doing so, I count out the damage assuming the Siege-Gang Commander I know he has and the Pyromancer. I do this out loud and my count shows that I don’t die. I’m actually reasonably sure I could die to an all-out-attack, but I’m hoping that he’ll miss it as it would be a little complicated to do properly.

He Vials out a Siege-Gang Commander at the end of my turn. He then plays the Pyromancer and does an all-out attack. I block his one Piledriver and we put damage on the stack. He makes an error and lets the damage resolve and I gain 4 life to go to 7. He sacrifices his Pyromancer to the Commander and sends the damage at me to take me to 5.

in play, so the right move would have been to sacrifice his Piledriver for mana once damage was on the stack. I then wouldn’t have gained any life as the Nishoba wouldn’t have done enough damage. He then would have had enough mana from sacrificing Goblins for mana and to the Commander to kill me. This is the type of play that makes Goblins a fairly hard deck to play. Often you can just turn a bunch of them sideways and win, but many times you need to fully exploit the stack to squeeze through exactly enough damage to win.

Game 2 is an example of how even a quick Akroma doesn’t just win the game. I have an opening hand with Reanimate

her (7 life).

He has taken a couple of points of search land damage, so 2 attacks later he’s at 6 life and facing death next turn. However, the fact that he’s on the play and has a Warchief in play makes the math very difficult. He uses a Matron (via Vial) to get Pyromancer, hits his 4th land drop and plays Pyromancer. He has 3 unblocked Goblins so we go to Game 3.

Round 4 playing Daryl with The Rock

I don’t know what sort of Magic shuffle Daryl has, but I have to Mulligan to 5 cards after winning the die roll for game 1. I finally keep a land with some lands but can’t get anything going. Mulliganing to 5 against a deck with discard doesn’t work very well.

I side in Rorix and side out the Nishobas. My experience against Rock is that you need to put really quick pressure against them before they can get their engine going.

Game 2 he does it to me again and I again go to 5 cards. I’m just kidding about him having a magic shuffle as Reanimator runs a fairly low land count at 16 and is a combo deck that needs to have the right mix of cards to start so you have to mulligan aggressively.

I do manage to get a Rorix going pretty quickly via Reanimate

. The next turn he tells me he sacs the Deed for 6 and sacs the Baloth for 4 life. I ask him to step through what he is doing as I may have responses.

He shows that he taps his Birds and his lands, including the City for the six mana. He then says he goes to zero life and then sacs the Baloth to continue. I ask him if that is what he wants to do and he verifies it. The other players at both sides of us stop playing and pay attention to us.

I tell him that he dies at zero life once state-based effects are checked and that he can’t sacrifice the Baloth to save himself. He says OK, and goes to scoop his cards up. He’s still looking confused and I stop him and call a judge.

As the judge is coming over, I tell Daryl that he shouldn’t just take my word for it if he’s a little unsure and that calling a judge in those sorts of situations is always best. We step through what happened and Daryl verifies that he went to zero life and the judge confirms that he dies when state-based effects are checked.

Before we start game 3, I show him the two ways he could have avoided dying. He could have either sacrificed the Baloth before activating the Deed (and tapping for mana) or he could have put the City of Brass

damage on the stack as the damage is a triggered ability. I know that hardened tournament players would have waited until after our games were over to do so, but he still looked a little uncertain about what happened.
