CardShark Content - Michael Potter (6/17/2002)

I wasn’t sure if I could make it to the Friday Night T2 tournament as I was leaving for China the next day (I’m typing this on the plane on the way to Shanghai). The week worked out a little better than I expected and I ended up being able to go. I hadn’t had any time to think about what to play and I had spent much of my Magic time working on UW Solitary Confinement

decks. The rest of the time was spent thinking of OBC decks (mainly tweaking the WW deck I’m running as my test deck and working on working Judgment into Ken Ho’s UG Pro Tour Osaka winning deck – I’m the UG net deck player in our test group).

So I had a couple of hours of time to get some sort of deck together. I could have played a net deck or my UW Accountant.dec (millstone and life gain), but I decided to toss something new together. The games still aren’t sanctioned, so I could use Judgment and it wouldn’t make any difference to my already low rating* if the deck completely bombed out. I had done a fair amount of testing with GW recently and those colours must have been on my mind. I decided to build a T2 with Judgment deck.

The first idea that popped into my mind was an Ernham-Geddon deck. I only have 2 of the Djinn’s, but it could be just about any undercosted fatty. To be honest, I have never played with such a deck before, but I thought I understood the idea – drop a hard to deal with creature and then blow up the lands and swing until your opponents life total drops to zero. I tried a couple of quick drafts using Global Ruin

to get rid of the smaller blockers – but I decided to try something else out. I decided to make a Phantoms deck.

I’ll list out the deck I used, do a quick tournament report on how it did, and then do a listing that I would use now instead of what I actually used. One note in advance – you’ll see some 1 ofs and other strange card counts. I do that pretty often when I’m developing a deck. I like to see if that one card makes a difference and if you play enough games in testing you’ll see it come out enough to have an idea. If it is good, I add more copies and make room.

There is a combo with any pumping enchantment and Phantoms. They make the Phantom’s invulnerable to death by direct damage. This is because of the way the Phantoms special ability is worded: “If damage would be dealt to Phantom Creature, prevent that damage. Remove

Typically they die when all counters are removed and they go to zero toughness. However, a pumping enchantment keeps them from going to zero toughness so the damage gets prevented as per their ability so they’re immune to damage (except for damage after Flaring Pain

Another important play note about Phantoms – if they’re gang blocked, they only remove one counter as the damage is dealt simultaneously.

On the downside, even a 1/1 removes a counter if it does damage and pingers can whittle them down pretty fast. They also get weaker every turn they prevent damage so the power they have to attack back with goes down. This can hurt in a damage race.

In all likelihood the Incarnations will have to be hard-cast. I used three different ones for testing purposes. I discussed my choices with another player in the store that often designs his own decks (Mark) and I now think that Valor

are pretty weak. Without Haste, I wasn’t sure how well I would do against mono-Black and mono-Black is pretty common in the store (at least three people ran it that night). There wasn’t enough time to worry about it, so off I went to Pleasanton Sports Cards. There were 15 people playing and we did our normal 4 rounds of Swiss.

1st Round – VJ Kripalani playing UG.

UG has won many of the T2 tourneys since we started, and VJ was my nemesis for months and months when I first started playing Type 1.5. I know he’s a pretty decent player so he is unlikely to make many mistakes. I win the die roll (the first time in two weeks) and decide to go first. VJ stalls on lands in game 1 even though he has an active Looter and after casting a few cards drawing spells. My horde marches in and smacks him to zero very quickly.

4th round – TJ Walker playing GR madness

There are three mono-Black decks and at least one Psychotog deck in the store, but the fast GR decks have kept them in check. TJ won at least one of the Friday tournaments with this deck and he’s a good player with aggressive decks. His brother had smacked me around pretty good last week so I’m looking for a little revenge on the Walker family (I have to be careful here, my wife’s maiden name is Walker, I don’t think there’s a relation but you never know).

I win the die roll. Now I know I’m on a streak. TJ fails to find red mana until it is a moot point (that’s three out of 4 opponents having a mana problem in the first game). Game 2 is back and forth with me at 9 and him at 11 life. I have a Glorious Anthem

8-0 games, 4-0 matches and first play in the tournament. My first T2 1st place in the store.

I collect my 4 packs (Frank, the owner, gives prizes to the top 50%. That means that the winner tends to get less than many other stores but many more are encouraged by the fact that they won at least a pack. The store draws a good crowd every week and others in the area can’t keep 8 people showing up. Prize structure matters at local stores.).

I still think they’re good because Black removal will put many more creatures in the graveyard. The Incarnations are still an experiment as there’s no way in the deck for you to discard them. They do make good walls, though, and they’re not horrendously overcosted as creatures.

This is another situation that I find people being sloppy with. Many people stop blocking or stop paying attention to their blocks. Even G/R now has instant speed Enchantment destruction (discard Ray of Revelation

I’m working on a few different decks here and will post an article on them as soon as I have time.

* Ratings are an OK indication of skill level. I’m an honest and straightforward person about this topic. Most of my tournament wins have done nothing for me, as the games were not sanctioned. My sanctioned Constructed matches have tended to be PTQ’s and the like (I played in the Malaysia Open last year because I was on a business trip there during the last APAC). I have one year of experience and I like to play my own decks and don’t drop all that much, and I’m playing over my head for the most part when the tournaments are sanctioned. So much DCI Constructed rating is below 1600 right now. My Vintage (from 1.5) would be 1750+ if all the matches I played were sanctioned, I’ve kept my Limited (mainly draft) rating in the mid-1600’s. Online, I’m 1700 Constructed and mid-1600’s limited. So if the author having a high rating is important to you as a reader (and it is for a certain group of readers), then I think it is important for me to mention it.

** On the topic of ratings, I appreciate those who take the time to give my articles ratings using the CardShark radio buttons at the end of the articles. Of course, I love those 4’s and 5’s I receive, but lower ratings give me ideas as well. If you really like an article or think they are really bad or really missing the point, please take the time to write me a short email telling me.
