CardShark Content - Michael Potter (6/25/2002)

I’m typing this up on a flight back home from Malaysia (Singapore – Tokyo – San Francisco). I have to take a business trip to Asia at least once a quarter and being stuck in a plane seat for 12+ hours is usually my time for experimenting with different deck designs. I use Magic Interactive Encyclopedia as my card source because I like looking at the art. I’m not sure if Wizards is going to update it past Judgment, so I may have to switch to Apprentice or something else.

does not help in the early game and it doesn’t stop Braids from resolving. The good news is that Braids decks seem to have fallen in popularity (only 7 were played at US Nationals).

There are two traditional ways to win with UW. The first is to use a large evasion creature to quickly take down your opponents life total. Examples are Serra Angel

s win through the second classic win condition (the first is lower your opponents life total to zero) – drawing cards with no library. Together with your opponent’s card drawing, they drain the library 3 cards a turn. If you cast one on turn 2 and activated it every turn, the average win will come on turn 18 or 19. Compare that to dropping a vanilla bear on turn 2. The game will be over on turn 12. At that early stage that seemed very uneven to me, as there would be more than 1 2/2 creature being played and it seemed that a Millstone

as the kill mechanism and quickly saw that a 4 turn clock is a great solution as well. I was able to win more often against that deck, though, and it took me a bit but then the two main problems with the Djinn hit me. 1) It is a creature and all the tier 1 decks I have ever seen can deal with creatures. 2) It costs a great deal to cast so it makes it less likely that you’ll be able to use counter magic the turn you cast it. Of course, you are playing Blue so you should be able to protect the Djinn.

is a better kill mechanism, there is something to say for a creature-based kill mechanism as well. Blue has decent medium to large sized flyers, and they can end the game quickly if you can stay alive while they’re attacking. You would probably use a 4/4 or a 5/6 flyer here in order to reduce the number of turns you have to protect your creatures. Solitary Confinement

hurts Black’s main non-targeted creature removal – Chainer’s Edict as it targets a player.

Other than card drawing spells, Blue has two in colour permanents that draw cards and another possibility in an artifact as well. All three cost 4 mana to cast and 2 of the three take 4 mana to activate.

It costs 4 to cast and has the ability “4, T: Draw a card.” (as a bit of trivia, the activation did not include tapping it as well as the mana in the past. I’m assuming that it must have been abused in some past deck so it received an errata/rewoding to tone it down. Most of the cards in the list are Sorceries. That means you need two cards in hand at the end of your opponents turn. You would have to run a fairly decent amount of card drawing if you were just going to rely on card drawing spells to maintain the lock. If they draw 3 cards, you would need close to 20 different card drawing spells in the deck to be fairly sure that you can keep up with Solitary Confinement

I then considered what “stay alive” spells I should have. Since I want to get up to 5-6 lands in play before I put the lock down, I need something that will keep me alive until then. Usually that means Walls or Life Gain (plus you’re playing Blue so you do get to say “no” fairly often).

is interesting as your graveyard should get pretty big. However it costs 7 to cast the first time and that’s a long time to wait until you can cast it, especially as you’ll probably not make land drops as you start feeding the Solitary Confinement

has variable life gain, but it digs three cards into your deck. I costs 4 mana and doesn’t net you any cards so it isn’t as good as other choices, especially since the casting cost of many of your spell is low.

Counters
There are two purposes to counters in this deck. The first is to keep you alive early. The second is to protect the lock or your kill mechanism. I normally run 10+ counters when I’m playing UW with Millstone

because the kill takes longer than using a big flyer (but it costs less mana to cast and comes out earlier). That means you have to keep yourself alive longer and prevent more spells from being cast.

B/W Braids (“Noir”) smacks this deck around and B/G Braids also does well if it can get a Deed down or get a good jump on you and drop the Braids.

I won a fair amount, but it is hard to win a longer game against a Control deck because you stop drawing cards and they can wait you out for 5 – 10 turns and not be decked during that time. With a little luck with your milling and a counter at the right time, you can pull off a fair amount of wins, but it isn’t easy and I was left with the thought that a more standard UW Life Gain/Millstone

Overall, I think that the UW versions did better than the GW versions I tried in my previous article (click on my name at the top of the article to see the others I have written). They had more answers to Upheaval

decks I’ve tried have been very bad, I just do not think they’re as good as other choices that are available. In the end, that is what matters when you’re trying to build a competitive deck.

Type 1.5

We play 1.5 at Pleasanton Sportscards every Sunday except the first Sunday of the month (Friday nights are Type 2 and soon to have some OBC as well, 1st Sundays are draft). Last Sunday I decided to play an Extended version of Legion Land Loss (I should get some Ice Storm

was the difference in both matches I played against mono-Black that day (Sinkholing my lands didn’t help - a little revenge against a land destruction deck). If you’re mourning the loss of Dual Lands in the new Extended, give 1.5 a try.

My deck ended up going 2-2. I had fun playing it, but I wasn’t happy with its lack of answers in a 1.5 environment. I’ll play something different next week.

The good news is that we had 38 people show up. For a local tournament that isn’t sanctioned or advertised, I think that is very good turnout. Every once and a while I see an article on how Magic is dying out. Then I look at the attendance at the local tournaments and at the Northern CA PTQ’s and I wonder why anyone would think that?

Magic the Gathering Online

I’m curious about how many people will be playing now that you need to pay to play. I’ll be online every once and a while (I use mgpotter as my online alias, I have always used my name as my alias, even back when I was using Apple ][‘s and a 300 baud modem – either mgpotter or Michael).

From what I have read, some of the better players are planning on supporting their online play by winning draft tournaments and reinvesting the packs they win. They’re assuming that there will be a bunch of scrubs like me to win against. With the tournaments being single elimination and the possibility that very good players will be there and that they’ll be hiding behind an alias, I wonder how many of us scrubs will stick around for the slaughter. I played way over my head when I first started, but I played my three matches and the better players did spend time going over my deck at the end giving me advice. I don’t see that happening online.

I’m also a little annoyed that I didn’t get one of the coupons for a free account/draft. I stopped playing as much after the first big card wipe and didn’t make the 25 game cut-off, which counted only games after the wipe. I had taken the time to make sure I recorded the bugs I found in the bug tracking system and had played quite a few games before the wipe, but I guess I wasn’t important enough to be considered in giving out the initial coupon.

OBC

My little playtesting group is going to start doing more and more OBC testing. I’m pleasantly surprised how well WW stands up to GU game 1. The little flyers do very well in holding off flying wurms once Glory

If you have any ideas you want my group to test out, I encourage you to email them to me and we’ll take a look.

*** Correction ***

Sigh.

See what happens when you've only been playing since Planeshift and only
know 6th Edition rules. As it has been pointed out, I got ´´mono artifact´´
wrong. Under the old rules, the Tome was limited to once a turn as well.

Thanks for the emails pointing out the evil of my ways ....
