CardShark Content - Michael Potter (7/11/2002)

The big local Magic news for is that our local store is now running sanctioned tournaments. It actually was interesting for last Friday night as we had announced and worked on running an OBC tournament and had not thought that the sanctioning application would be turned around so quickly. The DCI takes a fair amount of flack, but they seem to be very good at turning around applications for sanctioned tournaments and Pleasanton Sportscards was FedExed the prize cards and the sanctioning numbers within a day or so of the application being sent in. The store is a “Premier” store, so there may have been a little help from that, but I’ve heard the same from other stores that have tried to start up tournaments.

The problem with FNM is that three formats are allowed: T2, sealed deck, and booster draft. Block constructed isn’t on the official list. The good news is that OBC is 100% T2 legal and simply a subset of T2. We ended up with 16 players and they were all from the local group who were all expecting to play OBC and who only came with OBC decks so we were able to play OBC. 16 players allowed us to use the three judge system. I have unofficially been the main judge for the T2 tournaments and often am the go to person for 1.5 tournaments (I’m not a certified judge yet, but I do plan on doing that sometime in the next year – Type 1.5 is very hard to give ruling on because the card pool is so huge), and I named two others as judges for the night. As long as we’re 16 players and below, I plan on continuing to have 3 judges and having it switch to different people to spread the experience out.

I looked around the room and there were a wide variety of decks being played. There were a fair amount of Quiet Roar decks, but I saw G/R, Chamber Pot, a mono-black deck, a UW Birds deck and others as well. I was pretty worried about Quiet Roar as I had done some solo-testing (dealing out hands and running through the games to get an idea of what choices each player would have) and Quiet Roar had won most of the matches against WW.

In case the name ‘Chamber Pot” doesn’t ring a bell, you can find an outline of the deck discussed here:

is much more efficient at killing tokens as there is no drawback and no need to wait until they attack. However, it costs 3 mana to cast and only is a 1/1. While you are not likely to run into a Wurm until turn 4, you are increasing the chance that you’ll run into counter magic of some kind when you try and cast it. because I thought there would be lots and lots of flying Wurms in the environment and I wanted to get them in the graveyard if I could. My opponent’s graveyard was important ¾ of the matches I played, so I was glad they were available game 1. I’m considering increasing the count to 4 or cutting a sideboard card to fit it in.

The sideboard was an attempt to deal with different archetypes I thought might be in the tournament. The Stern Judge

I managed to get a few swings in and took him to 13 life (I had won the die roll and chosen to play – a big advantage in many Weenie on Weenie match-ups), but then he had a bunch of Birds in play and had cast Soulcatcher

’s Aerie. He swung and I blocked and killed two Birds. That meant two Feather tokens and it was my turn. I had Birds in play as well, so they were +2/+2. I swung and did 20 points of damage in one attack. On to game 2.

I won). That’s 2 of the last 3 Friday night tournaments I have won and I went 3-1 when I played Wu Weenie, so maybe my losing streak is officially broken.

After two tournaments in a row where I played a White Weenie-based deck and a bunch of play testing outside of the tournaments, I’m starting to get a decent feel for the archetype. I had played WW in 1.5 for about a month, but it is much harder to make the comparison because of the difference in power levels of 1.5 and T2 or Block Constructed.

The key appears to be evasion. The early speed helps, but it is the evasion that carries the day. When I look back at the life totals of the games I won, I see my opponent’s life dropping to a 10 – 14 range from small attacks. The final blow appears to be either a huge Alpha Strike or me steadily wearing him down until there is only a life point or two left and me having more creatures in play to force the final point through. I’m able to last and get the small amount of damage through because of Glory

OD/TOR/JDG draft

This was my third sanctioned tournament in the weekend and the first sanctioned draft at Pleasanton Sports cards. A month before I had drafted WR and done terribly (there is a draft the 1st Sunday of every month). This time I went in with a plan of playing GU. A few picks into my first booster, that went right out the window. I was being handed good Red card after good Red card. The other colors that looked good were Black and Blue. I’ve never seen a good UR draft deck, so I picked Black to be my second color. During Odyssey, I was able to draft 3 Firebolt

I had to work the DCI Reporter software (the store owner, Frank, was our judge, but I’m the most familiar with the software). In order to do pods, it seems to insist on having a minimum of 14 players and we had 12. I had wanted to do two groups of 6 with three rounds but couldn’t figure out how to set up the software to do that, so we did one big pod of 12 and 4 rounds of Swiss. After the tournament, I came up with what I thought was the best way to do it - make two pods of 6 and then use ordered pairing to keep the software from forcing pairings cross-pod. If you’re an experienced user of DCI Reporter, please send me an email to the address at the bottom and let me know what the solution is.

Round 1 – TJ playing GW

This was a very strange match. Game 1 I won by sitting behind big creatures and pinging him to death. That’s not the usually BR plan, but I couldn’t get through his creatures as they had too large a defense and he had me down to 4 life so I had to play very, very carefully. Game 2 I just overwhelmed him with removal and the right creatures at the right time.

TJ was pretty disappointed with game 1 as he had cast a Stern Judge

and he had gained 8 life plus he had me down to 4 life. I was surprised how long the game ran and I noticed that many, many of the other games became creature stalls that lead to 1-0 results or draws. I know that removal and evasion will go up in value for the next time we draft.

Round 2 Randal Droher - GWU

Game 1 was right out of the play book I had imagined when I built the deck. Turn 2 I dropped a Barbarian Outcast

on it and attacked (he had no creatures in play yet). Randal stalled somewhat on land and I simply burned any blocker he played and attacked. His life total went down in increments of 4 until he was dead. Game 2 was similar except he managed to get some damage in on me. He just couldn’t get enough answers down to deal with my threats and my draw was good enough to keep the pressure on him all game.

I was actually worried about this match-up. He had won a game in the previous round via a Genesis

lock that ran his opponent out of cards. I made sure my graveyard hate came in for game 2.

Round 3 - Mike Henson playing BWU

Mike joked to me that he needs an anti-Potter deck as he always seems to do well until he runs into me. Game 1 it looks like he had turned it around. He gets 6 points of flying damage on the table and takes me from 18 to 12 to 6. I get one flyer in to chump block and counter-attack with my other two creature for 4 each turn taking him from 17 to 13 to 9. The one turn of chump blocking just put me in an interesting position – Mike did not draw another creature and his creatures are all tapped out. I have no solution to his flyers in my hand or on the board and I only have 4 points of power on the table. I also have 4 Mountain

Even though I lost, I was pretty happy with the result. Rob and I have been playing against each other and play testing together for a couple of years and this was the first time he won a tournament.

Other Topics

I was going to discuss Type 1.5 Sligh, but it is quarter-end close for me and I do have a baby daughter due to arrive any day now, so decided to end this week’s article now while I know I still can finish it in time. I did play my first pay draft on MTGO over the weekend. I came 2nd in the 7th edition draft, but it was very poor in total experience compared to playing in a card store. I do not like the single elimination rules, the drafts should be Swiss rounds so you get 3 rounds of play for you entry fees. I also think that they’re going to need a ranking system where players with a certain ranking cannot join. If I’m going to play in a single elimination tournament with little to no interaction and teaching, I would at least appreciate the chance to play with like-experienced players.

Note that I do not mean that there should be open tournaments that restrict lower ranked players from joining. I mean it the other way; high ranking players should be limited to certain queues. Since most people hid behind an alias (I don’t, I’m MGPotter), you don’t get much warning about the skill level of your opponents unless you join and then use the information function to look up their ratings. In the local card shop that I started in I at least was helped by the experienced players and I could see who was playing. Online, I don’t even get that. There appears to be a much smaller player pool now that it costs money to play and I had to wait much longer for the draft to begin.
