What abilities should go in the base set?

Before you answer the question, check out this link (after you read the rest of my article, of course):

http://boards.wizards.com/tcg-bin/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=forum&f=38

I counted 5 questions on Protection in the first 3 pages. If the rules Q&A section on the Wizards site is filled with Protection questions every day (and it is, I try and help out here and answer questions when I have time to), I would argue that Protection is too advanced an ability for the base set.

I have a different opinion in the case of Trample. Trample questions seem to focus on the interaction with Trample and Protection. I very rarely see questions on Trample alone as an ability. I think this key Green ability should be in the base set. Maybe only on Uncommon or Rare creatures, but it should be there.

I recommend that experienced players who think everything is “simple” to understand spend some time reading the Rules board on Wizards website. You’ll see that they’re not just making it up when they say that Protection causes problems for beginners. You can even contribute to helping new players by answering a question here and there.

Two decks – T2 and Type 1.5

I’m now on “baby watch” as my wife’s due date is only a few weeks away. That kept me from going to the OBC Cleveland Grandprix Trial last weekend as I didn’t want to be 45 minutes away and leave my wife alone this close to term. I wish I could have gone, as I wanted to try out my OBC WW deck in a larger tournament, but I do try to keep my priorities straight. That meant that I was restricted to the two tourneys that are less than five minutes away from my house and that I had to chose a Type 2 and a type 1.5 deck to play.

As I mentioned in a previous article, not only do I have nothing against net-decking, I actually encourage it as a way of getting better at playing by playing better decks. Since we’re now doing Type 2 on Friday nights (FNM), I decided to look around and see if there were any new decks out with Judgment. The magic Amateur Championship was held at Origins (with very little coverage) and the format was Type 2 with Judgment.

All the top 8 can be found here: http://www.professional-events.com/decks/deck-amateurs2002.htm .

I was tempted to run the WB Weenie deck that Andrew Benanzer used as I am trying to keep to WW-type decks to help for practice for OBC. However, I’ve played WW enough recently that I decided I wanted a break. I like GR and GW, so the deck that Ben Sowards ran caught my eye.

Destroy target enchantment. Flashback G

This was an 18 person tournament at my usual haunt, Pleasanton Sportscards. As we had over 16 players, we needed one person to be the judge (no three judge system), and there was one other player who wasn’t playing that night so we nominated him as the judge. Jon actually had to make a few rulings and the other players did call him over to watch some games and resolve some disagreements, so it was good practice for him. The low ELO value and rules enforcement level of FNM is a good opportunity to give different people a shot at being the judge.

as his primary removal and the Pro-Black Centaur was really bad news for him. It got worse the next turn when I cloaked it up and started swinging. His life started to go down in 7-point increments while mine went up by the same amount. Three swings later he hadn’t found the solution and we went on to game 2. It wasn’t much better for him as a Cloaked up Brushhopper take 5-point chunks out his life and added to mine and I Waxed for the win. I hadn’t played a deck with big creatures in a while and it felt good to attack with fat creatures again.

Type 1.5 – Playing Sligh

The regular Sunday tournaments at Pleasanton Sportscards are Type 1.5 (every Sunday except the first Sunday of the month which is draft). I’m not 100% certain why the store settled on 1.5, but the smallest turnout is 24 people and 36 isn’t unusual, so it must be working. 36 people strains the space in the store and is about the maximum that can fit in all at once.

We play 4 rounds of Swiss with no play-off. I know that you don’t end up with a clear “winner” with only 4 rounds if you have over 16 people, but we are constrained by a 1 PM to 5 PM window. By keeping the tournament to 4 hours or so, the store has been able to attract a steady crowd that can afford a Sunday afternoon but isn’t going to play into the wee hours of the night. DCI Reporter does a good job of spitting out tiebreakers to the 4th decimal place, so we do have final standing at the end of the tournament.

The one final thing we do when running the tournament is that we use aged-modified Swiss pairing. We divide the players into 2 groups – 12 and under and 13 and older. The store gets a fair number of 10-12 year-olds who come to play and almost all of them are new players with a limited card pool. By pairing them with others in the same situation, we make it much more fun for both groups of players. If one of the younger players starts doing well (or starts using cards from a brother or parent that put them head and shoulders above the age group they’re usually paired in), they’re bumped up to the older age bracket. I have heard zero complaints from either group of players, everyone seems to like using age-modified Swiss.

The meta-game is varied. I would say that maybe 25% have “real” 1.5 cards making up most of their decks. Extended decks or Type 2 decks with a few older cards are much more common and there always are some pure type 2 decks (because that’s all the cards the player has). There always are a few combo decks and a few control decks, but burn and creature-based decks are always there.

I have played a wide variety of Type 1.5 decks, but I had never played mono-Red Sligh nor have I played a combo deck. Two weeks ago I decided to give Sligh a shot, but I was missing Chain Lightning

for the win).

Both games were very close. Everyone expects Sligh to be super fast, but a well-constructed WW deck in Type 1.5 is very, very competitive.

Match 2 – Jeff Lin playing UB Tog

Jeff is one of the younger players. He had won his first match and had been matched up in age bracket. I’m pretty relaxed going into this match as Jeff’s deck is a Type 2 deck and I’m pretty sure that 1.5 Sligh should manhandle it. I mulligan in game 1, have 1 land with my next six cards and a few incinerates in hand. I don’t see another land for a real long time and Jeff builds up mana and cards in ahnd and wins with his Tog. I did get him to 5 life but I couldn’t finish him off.

Game 2 is much better. I get off to a good start and have 3 2/1’s attacking pretty quickly. His life goes 20-18-12 before he can get any blockers out and I lightning bolt him to 9 and get one more attack for 2 through, use a seal of Fire, Fireblast

but never saw them. Game 3 Jeff has to mulligan and his life total marches quickly to zero before he can establish control. He had the normal early game problem of casting a blocker to deal with a 2/1 and tapping out or keeping counter mana open. I had burn and creatures in hand and quickly made both choices poor.

being played to bounce the Familiar, you might cause the whole combo to fizzle for a turn.

Overall I was happy with the way the deck ran. I’m not sold on the Lavamancers yet. I will play something different next time. With the dual lands rotating out of Extended, I’m expecting 1.5 to pick up in popularity and the tournaments are now sanctioned so they’re being advertised on Wizard’s site so I’m wondering if the local metagame will change as well.

If you happen to have a 1.5 deck you want me to consider playing, send me the list and I’ll see if I can piece it together. If it looks good, I may even give it a try.
