CardShark Content - Michael Potter (8/1/2002)

July 19th, I was getting ready for FNM. I had requests for about 20 cards to be lent out, and I got home early enough from work to actually be able to pull them together. However, I was in early from work as Kate was about 3 days past her due date and little Rachel could show up at any time. Kate had gone in for a hormone gel treatment to see if it would spur labour ahead. I didn’t want to drive all the way from Fremont to Walnut Creek in rush hour traffic (for those not from the SF Bay area, this can be a very bad drive on a Friday night), so I had left a little earlier than normal. She called me up about 5 PM saying that contractions had started and she didn’t think I should join the tournament. She wasn’t sure if I should come up yet (not sure if it was real or just the gel), so I headed off to Pleasanton Sports Cards to get the tournament, loaded up in DCI reporter and to lend out some cards. Kate called me about 6 PM and I headed up to Walnut Creek. Rachel Lydia Potter (8 lbs., 12 ounces) was born at 1:19 AM on July 20th. That’s my second daughter, and baby and mother are doing very well.

I joked with Kate about what efforts she would take to keep me away from playing Magic (I’m actually lucky to have a pretty understanding wife who also plays sometimes). Obviously, I missed the Sunday tournament as well and then a local business trip at the end of the next week made me miss FNM as well. I went down to Monterey and the weather was great and our hotel was right on the ocean. I caught up on my sleep a little and was able to do some good thinking about what deck to play on Sunday. I had always been tempted to try an Earthcraft

and many other creature-based decks.

The sideboard is a little random. I probably have to think some more about it, but it was effective in the tournament.

So I headed off to Pleasanton Sports Cards. We had 35 players at the store so we had to set tables up outside and a bunch of us had to play over the counter. There were quite a few new faces as well, it seems that Magic is growing in popularity in the area. Since the tournaments became sanctioned, the store is also drawing in a couple of players who have seen the tournaments listed on Wizard’s site.

Round 1 – Steve Garritano – GBr

I knew right from that start that I would be facing some sort of enchantment-based deck as that is what Steve usually plays. The decks are normally very strong and he has been playing for quite a while so he has a very, very deep card base. In general, his decks are 1-2 turns slower than a fully tuned deck would be and I like the way that improves my chances. The trouble is, his decks are also very good and he doesn’t make very many play errors, so I would have to play very well to keep up.

One of the benefits of playing in the local store is that you get to know the other players over time. I was able to email Steve and get the list he was using:

Steve had trouble finding land in both games. Most of his spells are very inexpensive to cast, but I wonder if he needs more land to make the deck a little more consistent. He told me that this is an untuned deck, I’m sure he’ll tune it up a little to be more consistent or a little faster.

Games 6-1, Matches 3-0

Round 4 – Jim Garritano – Mono Blue

There were 4 4-0 players going into the final round (the curse of only running 4 rounds for a tournament this big). There was a red Dwarf deck, a mono-Red burn deck, a mono-Blue control deck, and Infinite Rabid Squirrels of Death. I was in first place via tiebreakers and James (Jim) Garritano was in 4th with mono-Blue. I was most worried about the match-up for two reasons. First, I thought it would be very tough to win. Second, it would make my tiebreakers worse than if I played the #2 or #3 ranked person. DCI Reporter worked it’s magic and I faced the mono-blue deck and Jim got a chance to avenge his father (I played 2 brothers and a father/son). I managed to get Jim to email me his deck list:

It isn’t countered and Jim’s library ends up in his graveyard as I sacrifice the Rector to put a Nest on an untapped basic land. I saw two Furnaces that game (one he sacrificed to draw a card) and very few counters.

Type 1.5 decks

I actually received a decent amount of emails in response to my last article where I asked people to send me decks to consider. I’m going to play one for sure (once the cards arrive) and there are a few more that look promising. I hope that I helped others considering playing the format by including extra deck lists above.

Why do I occasionally state my DCI rating?

I actually had two different people ask me that question over the last two weeks. The answer is simple – I want readers to know that my ratings are in the low 1600’s so they can compare and contrast my advice to a benchmark. Like many, I often find that Internet Magic writers do a very poor service in the way they present their decks. They write how wonderful the deck is and how much it smashes all the archetypes out there. I try and have enough disclosure on how I came up with the deck and what my testing and playing experience was so the people reading my articles can make better decisions about following my advice.

I’m also not “embarrassed” about my record or my play skill. For the amount of serious time I put into Magic, I’m pleased with my results. The fact that I’m willing to go and play over my head for the learning experience accounts for much of my lower rating. Who knows, maybe OBC will be more of a breakthrough for me.

My personal goal is to get my ratings up into the low 1700’s and keep them there even though I’ll be playing in PTQ’s.

The Type 1 Debate – My Suggestions

I’ve seen quite a few articles over the past couple of weeks. I don’t play Type 1, I play Type 1.5 (they’re both “Vintage”, btw). The area I live in has several sanctioned Type 1 tournaments a week. I’ve occasionally checked how many people attended and the number seems to range from 8-16 with 8 being more common than 16. In the average card shop, that’s actually a fairly full shop.

Mark Rosewater said that Wizards would try and increase the number of Type 1 side events at major tournaments that Wizards is sponsoring. I have two further items to add to that idea:

1) Get at least a couple of the matches covered in Sideboard
2) For the Extended Grand Prix’s and Pro Tour Events, have one of the day-before Trials or Qualifiers be Vintage. My personal suggestion is Type 1.5 for the Grand Prixs and Type 1 for the Pro Tour event. I also suggest that this be one additional set of byes or slot so as not to take away from the format of the actual event. This would mean that 3 times a year you could win 3 byes to a Grand Prix by playing Type 1.5 and 1 time a year you could win a Pro Tour slot. The PTQ actually may be frustrating for Pro players that want to play Type 1 as they’re usually not allowed to play in PTQs.

I don’t think the above suggestions would be a major expense commitment for Wizards and it would do a fair amount to promote the older formats.

I’ll end this article up here, as I have to concentrate on the 2nd quarter 10-Q for my company. I may be personally liable for $5 million and 20 years of jail time if I get it wrong, so it will have slightly more of my attention than Magic for the next couple of weeks.
