CardShark Content - Michael Potter (8/24/2002)

I am very, very pleased that 10-Q season is behind me. With all the extra scrutiny that corporate reporting is under and with one main task for my job being SEC reporting, my work/life balance was skewed strongly in the direction of work. Couple that with my two daughters getting baptized last weekend and my house being full of family, and I haven’t played much or thought much about Magic over the previous week and a half.

I had played two tournaments a couple of weeks ago. I went 2-2 in a T2 tournament with a Hunting Grounds

deck (fun deck to play, I just had a little bad luck, another one went 3-0-1 in the same tournament). I drafted on the Sunday of that weekend (1st Sunday draft – we had a store record of 24 players) and went 1-2 in the draft with what I thought was a very good UB deck. I found out that I had too many “gating” cards (Wurmfangs) and my deck was too slow. I know he reads my reports, so I’d like to add that Mark Garrett smashed me with great style with his mono-Green draft deck. Mark is very new to playing and he had a mini-breakthrough that draft. Since there has been a great deal of Hunting Ground articles over the past little while and since I have trouble writing more about a draft where I went 1-2, I’ll leave it at that.

The state of Type 2

Look at the top 8 standard decks at Worlds. 6 of 8 were Tog decks. The winner of the Battle of the Togs was a ´´traditional´´ Wish-a-Tog with 2 Upheaval

It is a little bit of a stretch to say that these results are 100% proof that there is something wrong with the cards (from reading many tournament reports, I've noted that top players like to not only control what they play, but what their opponents play as well), but it is pretty strong evidence that there are problems.

Invasion Block is rotating out in a couple of months, but Upheaval

OBC WW

A little over a month ago I wrote an article on an OBC WW deck I was developing:

http://www.cardshark.com/content/view_article.asp?article_id=577

I was pretty happy with the way the deck ran the first time I took it out into a tournament, but I was more than a little dismayed that mono-black control was still around in OBC. I had hoped that the different GW and UG decks that were out there would cut down dramatically on the number of Black decks out there, but mono-Black was still putting up good numbers at Grand Prix trials and Pro Tour Qualifiers. I had made some sideboard modifications, but it isn’t a good match-up for WW.

We had arranged the Friday night tournament at Pleasanton Sports Cards to be OBC. Sort of a warm-up for the PTQ the next day. This is the deck I played:

). I’m working on a better plan, but right now I’m sort of hoping that the other strong decks out there take out the mono-Black decks so I don’t have to face them.

One advantage to helping run the local tournaments is that you get a certain amount of influence on what format is played in the store. With OBC PTQ season in full swing and the store not doing Friday Night Magic this month (there are tournaments, just not the official FNM ones), we were able to arrange two different OBC tournaments, both the night before a PTQ. So I swung over to Pleasanton Sports Cards to play some OBC. We had a pretty good turnout with over 20 players and did our normal 4 rounds of swiss (there are enough younger players that going past 10:30 PM is bad for attendance).

Round 1 – Russell Weeks playing GWU

Russell hadn’t known we were running OBC, so he had to scramble around a little to reconfigure his deck. Game 1 was pure beatings on me. I got a decent start and did get him to 10 life, but he had an Arrogant Wurm

looks very interesting; a one-sided Moment’s Peace really swings games. I decided that I would have to make too many changes to work this in.

I was giving a lift to a couple of the guys from the store so I made sure they would be ready early the next morning. I tried to get to bed at a decent hour and actually got a good amount of sleep (Rachel, my newborn, was very cooperative). I woke up early Saturday, did one last double check against my deck list, picked up the two guys going with me and then headed down to Neutral Ground – San Francisco. I’m glad we got there early. There were over 150 players in the tournament and they had to turn away 40 to 50 people. I think they were very, very surprised by the huge turnout.

to try and get a jump in the flyer race and try to keep damage taken as low as possible.

My strategy was to attack as hard as possible and as fast as possible to try and not give Glenn a chance to draw the Strands and maybe even catch him being a little mana-hosed. It worked game 2 and I eked out a victory. One main help is that I got Pianna down on the table first. We went on to game 3. on the table. We were in a massive creature stall and every time a new creature was cast we had to move cards around and be very careful with our tokens as we were basically sharing my token pool. I actually was very close to him in total flyers count and had a couple of cards in hand. He cast and flashbacked Battlescreech and attacked with his flyers the next turn (turn 2 of the extra turns after time was called). After I finished discarding and making flyers and blocking, he had 4 flyers left over and I was at 3 life. He emptied his hand of creatures and had too many for me to keep from getting 3 damage in his next attack and he won 2-1.

After the game was over and the result slip was signed and turned in, a person watching the game asked me what he should have done because he had spotted an error. One of the times a Phantom Nomad

had been moved the counters fell off it and were next to the tokens being used for Birds. In essence, Glenn had gained 2 Birds and probably would not have been able to kill me in his extra turns and the game would have been a draw. Glenn made Top 8 with a 6-1-1 record. With the tie and my eventual record, I might have made top 8. I explained to the spectator that he did the right thing by not addressing it to us, but that there was a judge sitting there watching the game as well and he should have told the judge.

I’m sure a lot of people would expect me to be bitter about this. I’m not even close to bitter. Assuming that the counters really did fall off as described, there was no way it could have been anything other than an accident – the tokens fell off when room was being made for another creature and both our boards were a mess. It is my responsibility to watch the game state and I signed the result slip. Glenn and I have exchanged emails since the tournament and he has been helpful and sharing his ideas. It also may be possible that the spectator was wrong. We actually had a decent sized crowd watching us as mono-WW wasn’t all that represented at the tournament. One judge had made Glenn replace the card backs he had been using as tokens as they were sideboard cards and that’s how we ended up with beads and coins to begin with.

Next tournament I’m going to bring Harry Potter cards to use as bird tokens or I’m going to go find some little plastic animals that can be tapped. I learned a valuable lesson, one that I’m going to apply to my play in the future.

When I was talking to Gary during the game, he mentioned that he often plays Type 1 at C&J Collectables in Fremont/Newark (it is right on the border). When I was looking up Vintage tournaments for my last article I noticed that the Thursday night tournament there draws about 16 players on a regular basis. If you’re interested in Type 1, that might be a place to start.

I knew I couldn’t make Top 8 and almost dropped. The others in my group wanted to keep playing so I stayed in as I was their lift.

I was a little mentally tired at this point. They were giving out prizes to the top 19 players, so I had incentive to win. Tyler won the die roll but had to mulligan. He never really got established and I rolled right over him. Unfortunately, I never saw all that much of his deck. Game 2 featured a much slower start by me. He cast Grizzly Fate

, attacked, and did far more than the 14 points of damage I needed to do.

Games 14-7, Matches 6-2

I ended up in 16th place overall and won ½ a box. This was my best finish ever in a PTQ and I played a deck I had built myself (I know that WW is as old as dirt and that the cards to play are fairly obvious, but I started on this deck from the moment Judgment was released).

I need to take a hard look at the deck and make sure I’m still convinced it can work at a PTQ. I noticed all day that my opponents who were playing multi-colored decks often lost a turn trying to get the right mana out. That’s too long against this deck.

I need to work more on when to mulligan. I lost a few games because I kept hands that were too slow. I also need to work on my sideboard to address there possibly being more WWu decks out there and to tune it better for the Mono-Black match-up. I have to test Prismatic Strands

and see if I need it in my deck.

I’m not sure what I’ll play at the Sacramento PTQ, but I am planning on being there.

Type 1.5

I haven’t had much chance to play 1.5 recently, but the local tournament is coming up this weekend. I have two deck ideas. Someone who plays 1.5 fairly often in NJ sent one to me. The other is an idea that I have been kicking around for a while. I should have a report on it soon. I also exchanged emails with Jean Miguel in Ontario who played in his first Type 1.5 tournament and won a Lotus (he played WW). I’m always happy to discuss my experiences with different decks so feel free to email me.
