I think I figured out why D is a decent player. The time he has saved over the years by writing “D” instead of a full name has given him an unfair advantage over people like me who have 7 letter names and who refuse to use the shorter version of our name. I was plenty worried about this match-up after the beating Ryan had given me. I resolved to mulligan any hand that wasn’t a beating with multiple flyers. I won the die roll game 1 and got a killer draw. He stumbled a little in the beginning and then I had too much damage coming too quickly and I won. Game 2 he had to mulligan and got a poor start. I again had a blazing start out of the gate and I didn’t stop attacking until I had won.

That was good enough for 11th place, I missed getting a full box but one place. A UW deck ended up winning the whole thing (only after concessions and such in the top 8). The big result for me is that I have managed to get my rating above 1700 in constructed, which is one of my goals. Wizards seems to recognize 1800 as the first level in which you’re considered “good” (they give 1 bye at Grand Prixs for an 1800 rating), so I guess that is my goal. There’s one more local OBC tournament on the 21st. I will have limited testing time as I’m heading off to Asia next week on a business trip, but I’m still undecided in what to play. Round 2 – Jon Ma playing BR

Jon was depending on Blitz/Rites for a surprise win. I think he should have run Mono-Red as getting enough Red mana proved to be a problem in both games. I essentially dropped lots of my little flyers and swarmed him to death in both games. I was very careful to make sure that cards in hand plus a Blitz couldn’t kill me.
