I went 1-2 drop. My win was against someone playing in their very first tournament and then I lost my next two. I had a good time playing the games, but my cards were not too hot. I ended up with a WB Clerics deck (with a Zombie sub-theme). I did have removal (one copy of Smother

I’m going to reserve my judgment on the set until I’ve played it for a while. It seems to have some fun creatures and effects, but I saw so many creature stalls at the prerelease that I’m wondering at how fast it can play.

sealed deck, so I’m going to be practicing for it. I used to live in Hermosa Beach so I might head down with my family (wife and two kids) so they can enjoy the area while I play some Magic. It is being held in the Airport Hotel cluster right near LAX Airport. That area is very sterile, but both Manhattan Beach and Hermosa Beach are reasonable drives/cab rides away and both have good bars and restaurants.

and swing for the win). I then faced a mono-black deck that crushed me and played one more match before dropping and heading home. That’s it for OBC. I tried the other main decks in play testing. I probably should have played something other than WW, but I did play a deck I had come up with myself. I really didn’t enjoy OBC as much as I enjoyed IBC and I’m not that sad to see it leave. Maybe Invasion block was my first experience with Magic and it has some sort of special glow around it for me, but I don’t recall looking at different cards in OBC and wondering just how I could make a winning deck with them.

Type 2 Report

Last Friday I headed off to Pleasanton Sports Cards to play some Type 2. We had 20 players and played our normal 4 rounds of swiss. I haven’t had much opportunity to play Type 2 recently, so I was guessing that the metagame in the store would be. I guessed that there would be a decent number of Tog decks and didn’t feel like playing Tog. Looked through the undefeated Day 1 decks from Worlds and decided to go with Squirrel Opposition

to stick. Time was called and I had been rushing a little so I wasn’t making the optimum plays. I couldn’t do lethal damage in the last turn so the game ended up a draw.

Overall, I was pretty happy with the way the deck performed. I need to take a harder look at the sideboard and make sure it suits the store’s metagame a little closer. I did take second place, so don’t have too many complaints about the list I used.

I also am going to take a good look at this type of deck for the upcoming Type 2 once Invasion rotates out. Static Orb

will be around until 7th Edition rotates out, and that’s not until Gencon next year. It’ll have to be a UG version, but the focus might help a great deal. I’m also going to take a look at the UB versions that were played when Odyssey first came out (last year’s Invitational) to see if there are any ideas or themes that will carry over to the new set.

If you’re in the SF East Bay area and you decide to drop by my local store to play in one of the tournaments, I suggest calling ahead. There’s usually room, but the store can’t set up tables outside anymore to handle the overflow (the store holds 24 players fairly well, but we’ve been using extra tables when we hit the typical 30+ players for the Sunday Type 1.5 tournaments). That means the store has been cutting down on the number of players it accepts.
