My local store (Pleasanton Sports Cards) has a very heavy GU (Madness) and BU (Tog) metagame. Those two different deck types have been consistently winning over the past couple of months and most of the better players play that type of deck. That means there are lots of Island

The tournament was one of the smaller ones we’ve had at Pleasanton Sports Cards, with 15 players. For the first time in a while, running 4 rounds would give us a “natural” winner.

We’ve been using the newer version of DCI Reporter that has the .WAV file that shouts out the time left. It seriously cuts down on the number of times the judge has to answer questions on “how much time is left?”

Round 2 vs. Jeff Lin – UBW “Braids/Tog”

I joke with Jeff about meeting him again (we played the previous week). I’m expecting to see some sort of deck with Psychotog in it. Jeff was playing a pretty standard version of Tog, but he’s impressionable enough that he let a few of the others in the store get to him about playing the same deck. So now he’s trying to play all sorts of different variations on the deck that he came up with himself. They still have a UB base, but he has been trying different themes. I’m not sure if I should reinforce this or talk to him about playing a more mainstream version of Tog and ignoring the peer pressure he feels. I like the fact that he’s trying different decks, but the versions he is coming up with are just not as strong as the “net deck” he isn’t playing.

I win the die roll, decide to play, and then have to mulligan. I end up with a decent hand and my draws are kind to me as well. I get Opposition

Round 4 vs. Stan Gin playing UG Madness

I knew that Stan would be running a more mainstream version of UG. He’s also a good player that makes little to no errors in his game play. I win the die roll for game 1 and we both develop our mana and get a few creatures out. I manage to get 2 Opposition

Obviously, I was happy with the overall results. I was lucky in a couple of games (Jeff probably will never forget to sacrifice to Braids again), but there were very few games that I felt that I didn’t have a chance.

States Decks

Last year I was very excited about playing in States. This year, there is no Northern California State Championships. The CA Championships are being held in Southern CA. I would go except I’m leaving on a business trip to Asia. That cuts down my desire to do a lot of testing and trial and error on some new decks. I’ve been thinking of the new Type 2, but last year I worked my harder at it.
