-Arcane messes that never really did what I thought I designed them to do. The R/W one died a long time ago, and I ended up tearing the Green one down completely a month or two ago.

Anyway, cut to that same day a month or two ago, when I’ve decided to pull together an odd idea that I’ve been thinking out loud about since the release of Ravnica. My mom has seen me and my brother plan out and test decks in the middle of the floor many times over the years, and she decided to ask me a question about what I was doing, seeing me struggle to shuffle a stack of cards that was then somewhere around 170 units large. I admitted to her that people usually only built decks that large for either (or both) of two reasons: 1) They’re dumb. 2) They have a very special purpose. To tell the truth, I wasn’t completely sure which reason was backing me up. I wanted to make a Dredge

and so I could fit everything I wanted in there. Cards came and went, strategies evolved and died, and the deck eventually became 120 cards. Testing against my brother, one of my friends, and some opponents at the local card shop (it is definitely not fast enough for tournament play) brought more changes and realizations. I believe that the final product delineated below is a rather well-tuned mass that should be especially dominating in multiplayer, with its capacity to control, persist, rejuvenate, and muscle its way through almost any situation.

Let’s Begin.

The sheer size of the deck prevents me from going for the card-by-card discussion that I did for my other two articles (I almost said “three articles”; I had another one in the works that was supposed to be a tournament report for my B/U/G arcane, but it was a horrible, boring mess). Having said that, I’ll just talk in general about some of the forces that make the deck go.

First of all, the mana base. The mix of lands by colors mostly reflects the proportions in which those colors appear in the deck. I had some trouble in earlier, larger builds, because I didn’t have the land/nonland proportions done correctly. It was partly because I was rounding off the fractions too many times in the mental steps I was taking to get my ratios for a deck of between 150 and 170 cards, based on what I usually did for a deck of 60 cards. Part of the reason I ended up paring it down to 120 is because the calculations would be easier to do (just double the count). I piled in my Civic Wayfinder

for fixing and card draw (very important for Dredging). The cycling lands that ended up in the deck were originally an accident. I had to cannibalize two other decks to make the land base when I was building, because I didn’t have my extra basic land with me at the time. Time, however, has shown that they’re just the kinds of things that this deck wants, needs, and loves. Life from the Loam

jumping back and forth between my hand and graveyard.

One might also notice that there’s a significant amount of creature control in the deck. I figured right from the start that the deck would need some setup time, and might run into problems with having to face too many creatures at once. I started with four of each of the common Black removal that Ravnica had to offer, and the Putrefies came in later. Darkblast

as often as possible. However, I ended up restricting myself to Green and Black. The blue that used to be in the deck was much more of a hindrance than a help in the long run. Like I said before, the cycling lands were a happy accident, and they’ve proven their worth to the theme of the deck more times than I can count. An alternate function of the common guild lands (as dubbed by my friend Gabe: “Bobo dual lands”) is to bounce a cycling land that had to be played back to my hand so I can dredge a card off of it. cards, themselves. All of them were chosen for their potential in the realm of utility. The big point of Dredging as often as possible is to fill up my graveyard with as many options as possible, with the main advantage being that I can then pick and choose from those options however I see fit to do so. They really all speak for themselves, and there are no funny tricks to be pulled that I haven’t already mentioned somewhere else in the article. So there you have it; I’m pretty sure that’s all there is to be said. My other articles seemed to get a respectable response in the forums, and I look forward to seeing anything that my interested readers might have to say. I’m that “Rhadamanthus” guy, in case you don’t know. Anyway, I guess the moral of this story is that if you’re going to be dumb, at least have a good reason for it. Until next we meet…
