had made it to the timeshifted list. I had long forgotten where my one and only copy (in Japanese, no less) had come from, and it had been a long time since I had last played with it. Though I have a dedicated 5-color deck which I keep up-and-running, the card quickly came out since I was pretty much only playing big multiplayer games for a while (it’s amazing what removing “cheap” ways to win will do for peoples’ attitudes towards you, also, having that in there made the games less fun for me). Coming off of Ravnica, it only took a few well-placed dares from some friends to go ahead and try to build a “serious” deck for Standard play.

The first version that I actually took to FNM wasn’t very organized, to say the least. Games consisted of me scrambling for the necessary lands, throwing out speed bumps to stall for another turn, trying desperately to assemble an appropriate squad of creatures, and usually getting run over horribly before I was able to pull it off. One problem was that there was no removal, which was hurriedly rectified. Another problem was that there were too many cards that didn’t really do anything other than just being more than one color. For instance, Izzet Guildmage

The first thing you might notice is the sub-optimality of the color mixture in the land base. As always, I build with relatively limited resources compared to some other players, and I just happened to be unlucky that there was so much overlap in the dual lands I had been able to collect up to this point (and not even in colors that would be best suited for the smooth operation of the deck). To address the problem of cards that didn’t do anything, I went back and doubled up on more of the cards that did, in fact, have useful functions. In general, having guildmages in play is the same as suddenly having a bunch of extra cards in hand. doesn’t have real board impact, but his abilities are also very, very good. His very nicely priced blue card-drawing ability is best for earlier in the game, and his also nice-pricey black discarding ability can be used to disrupt an opponent from making plans in the mid and late games. ’s green +2/+2 ability gives me the capacity to race my opponent a bit if I don’t have much else going on, and his red ability that trades extra land for damage can be used to wrap up a close game. Rakdos Guildmage

in my possession. His green 1/1 saproling ability is nice, as is his white +1/+1 for my side ability, but he would probably be replaced if I ever got a copy of the 5th dragon.

While we’re on the subject of dragons, let’s look at my improved methods of winning the game. I’m really glad that they only cost 6, like the Invasion dragons. In this deck, as you might imagine, that’s a very manageable number. Each of their abilities is amazingly great, though Oros is the most situational of all of them. As I alluded before, I just don’t happen to have a copy of Numot, the Devastator

always gives a respectable effect, even turning a small squad of guildmages into a surprisingly large force of beaters. It’s usually the card that ends the game, and no one ever seems to expect it, strangely enough. Luckily, it’s kept a low enough profile since printing to give me that element of surprise. I suppose I should include Supply // Demand in this part of the discussion, as it’s closely related to getting to the win. The Supply half can be used to either stall for time or build up a crowd for a monster Tromp, which is always fun. The Demand half can get pretty much anything in the deck, whether it’s a guildmage whose abilities I want, a dragon that I’m ready to play, or, of course, the Coalition Victory

for a flashy and silly final play of the game. I don’t want to get the Victory until I’m ready, so the single copy is enough to either stumble upon by chance or tutor for when appropriate.

Now let’s take a look at that sideboard. Coldsnap hearkened back to the “good” old days of Magic, where narrow cards abounded and the Haterade flowed like water. From this, we got two rather useful cards in Cryoclasm

The former can be used to put a control player off-tempo and nudge the clock forward a few ticks, and the latter can be used to cheaply and effectively stave off some burning and/or beatdown (you might already be able to tell that this deck isn’t really well-prepared for an early rush). is another gift from the old days that, gratefully, is a lot easier to play in the present environment, and is very good at giving 2-for-1s, and even the not too uncommon 3-for-1s (note that excess damage can always be aimed at the opponent to offset the lifegain, which is already a pretty reasonable drawback, considering what the rest of the card does). Finally, we have Moratorium Stone

This deck is really fun to play, but I must admit that I’m still having trouble playing it correctly from time to time. Is there anything you see that could use some improvement? Drop a line in the forums and pass some enlightenment my way. Messing with this has been the most interesting and exciting deckbuilding experience I’ve had in a while, and I would love to take it to another level if I can. I’m really looking forward to the next time I get a chance to hit up a Friday Night Magic event and try it out against the current Standard field. Though I’m not expecting epic success, by any means, I just want (for the one time I’ll be able to pull it off) to see the look on the other person’s face when they count the colors, count the land-types, and call a judge over to confirm my explanation of the un-English text on my Coalition Victory
