CardShark Content - Mike Lanigan (5/25/2005)

This past weekend was yet another wonderful prerelease time for all. Sealed is one of my favorite formats because it takes much more skill to build your deck from a bunch of random cards and then to pilot that deck to a successful performance. I think that sealed is one of the hardest formats to play but at the same time probably one of the most fun. It also takes a great deal of skill to do well in this format because not only do you have to build your deck with new and unfamiliar cards to everyone but you have to play them in an also unknown environment. These various things lead to many play mistakes and also for very interesting games.

I have found one thing that helps tremendously in this format, knowledge. Everyone has heard that knowledge is power and in this case the saying is most definitely correct. With a basic knowledge of the cards in the new set players can build more efficient decks and use the new mechanics to great effect. Now if you are not familiar with what I am talking about, I am referring to the spoiler lists for each new set. When a set is getting ready to come out and www.magicthegathering.com is previewing the new cards other sites such as www.mtgnews.com and www.mtgsalvation.com are putting together a listing of all the cards in the set. This list is typically finished a day or two before the prerelease so that anyone who wants to can take a look at the cards they will be playing with and against throughout the prerelease. It is a lot of fun to keep track of the new additions to the list and to make predictions about how good they will be in different formats.

So if your with me still your probably saying to yourself…”just get to the darn report already!” The following is a listing of my sealed card pool, if you are not familiar with the new cards yet, as you should not be, then feel free to check one of the links above and browse the full spoiler for Saviors of Kamigawa. In the list below I have sorted each color first by Champions and Saviors cards and then by mana cost so the list can be easily navigated. Take a look and see what deck you think you would build from this list and then go ahead and look at what I played.

T Add 1 to your mana pool. 3, T, Sacrifice a creature: You gain life equal to the sacrificed creature's toughness.

I am not going to go through all of the cards for two reasons. First, the Champions cards are well known and many others have written articles about what is good and why they are good. Second, many people (possibly even myself) will write articles in the near future about all the cards in Saviors and their positives and negatives. With that being said there are a few cards I want to talk about that impacted my decisions upon building this deck broken down by color.

White – The cards in white are definitely solid. There are good, efficient creatures and good spells to go along with them. My first impression was that white would probably end up being my second color because of all of its strengths in this pool. One of the main reasons that white looked so great was because of two of the new cards, Charge Across the Araba

, is one of the best removal spells in the set and probably even in the block. Overall white is a pretty solid choice.

Blue – The first thing to notice about blue is the lack of good creatures. There are a total of six creatures and most of them should not make it into your deck. Blue however is not good for its creatures but for its spells and this pool gives us some good tools to work with. The splice mechanic could be abused very nicely through bounce, card draw, and then whatever you could splice onto them from your other color(s). This color looks like it could be a light splash or a third color if necessary.

Black – Black is very shaky in this pool because it is very light on playable cards. Black does look good for its removal as that is mostly why people play black. The one thing that is really good in this selection is the card Sink into Takenuma

Sweep - Return any number of Swamps you control to their owner's hand. Target player discards a card for each Swamp returned this way.
. Now at first glance this card does not look to be that powerful, but after playing against it over the weekend it really does its job well. The reason it is good is because most decks in this format do not utilize the first three to four turns. Yes, some decks play creatures or spells during them but nothing that you are usually going to lose to. So, for instance, if you kill their creature third turn and then bounce all or most of your lands to make them discard the rest of their hand on fourth turn then you have a whole hand and they have to rely on just top decking cards. Sure this can backfire but it is really effective as you will see later in the article.

Red – Ok what do I have to say about red you ask? BOMBS! Kikki and the red Kirin are most definitely bombs and you should always try to include the bombs in your sealed pool if at all possible. The one thing that is disappointing about this red card selection is the absolute lack of removal which red is supposed to be good at. There are a number of other creatures in both old and new sets that will complement both bombs very well. At this point I am thinking that red will definitely be the main color and probably white as the second color.

Green – The first thing I have to say about green is that many players will simply not play green no matter what cards they have because they believe the color is just not good. They are wrong, but their reasoning is that green is bad because it has no removal and all the other colors do. This green pool is amazing really and we have some bombs in this color as well in Kodama of the South Tree

, and Matsu-Tribe Decoy. Putting in the two three casting cost creatures, with really effective abilities I might add, drastically lowers the mana curve of the deck and makes the deck as a whole much better. I was very happy with the deck and I was able to do very well with it. The main event is a bit overwhelming for me so I participated in one of the flights with this deck. The following is a brief match analysis for my Saviors prerelease.

Matches:

Match 1 – First round I faced a red/blue deck that was decent. The guy playing it was an alright player but his deck had so much removal that he kept killing so many of my creatures. If you noticed my deck is very aggressive with only four spells in the deck and one that turns into a creature so I was able to overwhelm him with too many creatures that he couldn’t kill. The second game I got my card drawing engine going with the Haru-Onna and Glitterfang

. I think I drew at least four or five extra cards off of that combo and he just couldn’t keep up with me. So I go 2 – 0.

Record 1 – 0

Match 2 – Second round I had to play a similar deck to the one I was playing, red/green. The red/green deck combination was apparently very popular today as I saw many others piloting the decks. The key factor for this match was just that I had bombs and his creatures were just pretty good. The red Kirin was the MVP in this match and many others throughout the whole day and basically won this match for me. Both games were close and then I would draw one of my bombs and that would finish him. I won both games going 2 – 0.

Record 2 – 0

Match 3 – This match, against a green/black deck, was one of the most fun all day but it was a very tough one. The first game the guy pulled a similar situation with Sink into Takenuma

card accept I had three or four creatures to his one or two and he did it on turn five for four cards [get all that? ; ) ]. I really thought I had this game won because he bounced all but one of his lands and I had clear board position but he ended coming back and killing me, I think he was at less than five life when I died as well. The second game was very close as well but I was clearly beating him until on my alpha strike to win the game I made a play mistake which made me lose the game. The turn before he had blocked one of my big creatures with his green zubera and on my next turn I forgot about the token that it made allowing him to block just enough to win the next turn….he was a two when I died to my own play mistake. The kicker is that if I had remembered about the token I could have just made my tribe decoy kill it letting the rest of my creatures through. So I end up losing 0 – 2 in a match that I feel I should have won.

Record 2 – 1

Match 4 – For this round I had to play against a green/white deck the first game and a green/red deck second game (he sided out the whole color for a new color). The first game he gets a third turn ghostly prison and my awesome attack is majorly slowed. The deck ran light on land so he just could not draw into his fourth land. This let me build up an army and overrun him. The Kirin helped a lot as he just flew over all his guys. The second game when he sided out his second color was not that great on his part either as he was land screwed yet again. I really had tempo going this game since he didn’t have the prison out and the game was fairly quick. I win the match 2 – 0.

Record 3 – 1 and I absolutely have to win the next round to get into the top eight.

Match 5 – This round was a fun one as a somewhat knew the player, I had traded with him earlier in the day and we talked until the next round started. His deck was black/white and he definitely had the bombs as well. Game one was good and very close but even after he dropped Kokusho I was still able to kill him…barely. The second game I get a great and very aggro hand and am going strong till he drops Michiko Konda, Truth Seeker

on turn four or five. I drew into a land light hand so I couldn’t attack with all my creatures or I would end up having to sacrifice all of my permanents. This leads to a stalemate for many turns. I keep playing creatures but only attacking with one so that I could manage the sacrificing. The game was very long but I drew all four of my bombs during the course of the game. with the Kirin in play and stole his Kokusho. Then I was able to attack with the Kirin for three damage and then I had to sacrifice a creature to his Michiko Konda so which one do you think I sacrificed? Yes of course, his Kokusho for the win!

Final Record 4 – 1 and I take fifth place in my flight due to tie breakers.

The prerelease was a great time and a ton of fun. I encourage everyone who has the opportunity to go to one to do everything in their power to get there. Well I hope everyone enjoyed my report as a little break from my standard article series. I will be back next week with another standard article and another deck option.

If you have any questions or comments about what happened email me.
