CardShark Content - Mike Lanigan (6/14/2005)

Over the past almost three months I set out to write as many articles on as many decks in Standard as possible to give players all around some ideas about what to play for this Regionals. In this article series I have taken all you readers out there for an adventure among all the standard decks. This journey began with the presentation of a staple tier one deck, Mono Blue Control, and trying to show a different way to build it effectively. The next stop was to the deck that was built to beat what many people thought was the dominant deck at the time (Mono Blue Control), Mono Green Aggro. After talking about some mainstream decks I went and talked about some rogue deck choices in R/G Land Destruction, U/W Skies/Mono Black Control, and BraidsGroom. Then due to time constraints, you know Regionals being in about a week once this gets published, I finished up by talking about four very important but very different red decks in the metagame right now.

Even though I talked about many different decks, there are still some notable decks that I didn’t cover. At the top of this list is Tooth and Nail

hands down. The fact that Tooth remains the top deck in players’ minds amazes me because I thought once Betrayers came out that the deck was dead. Let’s just think for a minute about all the Tooth hate running around right now.

First we have a devastating card in Sowing Salt

what the heck is the Tooth player really supposed to do? Get to nine mana by just playing a land per turn? I don’t think so. Also in red we have numerous other land destruction spells that are usually played along with the Sowing Salt

and further destroy the Tooth player’s combo literally.

is your deck choice for Regionals. Also don’t forget to prepare for this match because you will face it if you go to the tournament. I predict a large percentage of the field will be playing this deck, probably somewhere around 30 – 40 %. I mean for real, when Ravager’s around it doesn’t matter how much hate is around, some decks are going to do well regardless, same story here.

. Both of these decks will be prominent decks at this tournament as well. With so many decks out there for this Regionals you may be thinking: well what deck should I take? I’ve seen so many different decks but I still don’t know what I should take. My answer to that is to find a deck that you are comfortable playing and that you like to play. This tournament is such a long one that you really need to have experience playing the deck you are taking and you need to be able to have fun with it. For instance, Mono Blue is a great deck and probably one of the best but playing it for nine or so rounds and especially against the mirror just does not sound like fun to me at all even with my non typical build of the deck. One of the great things about Standard right now is that so many decks are viable. I really think that you can take any of the decks I have mentioned in this series and in this article and do very well. Whatever your choice, test the deck. It does not matter what it is but test the crap out of it. Play it so many times that you know it inside and out and you know how to play the different matchups. Sadly after all these articles about this huge tournament and all the testing that I have done it ends up that I don’t even get to go. That’s life I guess. If I were to go I would probably take a similar version of Big Red from my article last week or possibly R/G Land Destruction because of the amount of Tooth and Nail

I expect to see there. I wish everyone who gets to go luck and have fun because that is the main reason to play this game.

Stay tuned for more forthcoming articles from me on various subjects as Vintage decks, sealed card pools and other random things as well.

As always, if you have any questions concerning this or other topics, feel free to email me.
