CardShark Content - Mike Lanigan (7/21/2005)

Hello all you who read my articles. After a couple week break I am back again starting another article series. One of the main reasons that I took a break was to figure out what format I was going to write about. The format that I chose was Vintage, or for you old school players, Type 1. Ok so this requires some clarification or everyone that plays Vintage/Type 1 will be confused/mad at me for this series. The place that I play near Pittsburgh holds Vintage tournaments (that are unpurified) regularly every Friday night. We get 24 people every week as that is the maximum number of people allowed due to the fire code and the owner. This format is not really Vintage however, because not one person there plays what most would call serious Vintage decks. At this tournament there are a handful of people that come occasionally that have a set of power, a few others that have a couple pieces of power and even some who don’t know what power is. For anyone who doesn’t know what the Power Nine is here is a list to go look up on this site because this is something every Magic player should know:

Any random week you could see competitive decks from any of the other major formats such as Standard or Extended and also many decks that are technically Vintage decks, and good decks, but that you would never see winning at Vintage tournaments. There are all types of good and bad decks. To put it bluntly, there are basically some decks there that a good player’s draft deck from Champions Block could easily beat and there are some decks that could be real competitors in the format they were designed for. I hope that gives enough clarity to the format. It is fun though as any random deck could win or lose depending on the week and also because anything goes.

The first deck in this series that I am going to talk about is called ErnhamGeddon. This deck is so old school it’s not even funny. By old school I am seriously talking the 1996 Pro Tour here people. This deck was by far the most popular deck back then. Here is Bertrand Lestree’s list that he top 8’d at the Pro Tour with:

This decklist was one of the hardest decks to track down. Because it was out before the internet was big, there is not that much information about this time. The deck was designed as a control deck to basically kill all the opponents’ creatures and land and then beat them with an Ernham Djinn. The deck is basically play the Ernham Djinn, (or some other beater), then play Armageddon

and then win. With this “combo,” along with all the other control elements of the deck it was hard to beat back then.

One day recently I was thinking a great deal about the origins of Magic and topics such as this ErnhamGeddon deck and black summer with all the Necropotence

decks running rampant. This led me to thinking on building ErnhamGeddon to take to my “Vintage” Tournament. I thought it would be fun to play a version of this old school deck with newer cards. I started getting the cards and forming my list, but as I did, I was doing a lot of thinking about the deck. I thought there was one fundamental problem with the deck…the combo cards both cost four mana. That is a complete waste and slows the deck down a ton. So, since I cannot change the Armageddon

. (I actually did lose to this card up there once sadly as I was playing mono black and had no answer to it. What made it worse was the kid who played it was someone who I had basically taught to play. It was kind of like Star Wars when Vader kills Obi-Wan with that whole, “Once I was the apprentice, but now I am the master” kind of thing.)

– Yup, not in the deck but I thought I would talk about them anyway. I think these cards are awesome for this deck but with how the format is they are usually dead because not many people play non-basic lands. With that being said, they are great cards and will probably make it in the deck at some point.

The deck overall turned out very cool and a lot of fun with some old school flavor. ErnhamGeddon Lives!
