CardShark Content - Mike Lanigan (8/6/2005)

Hello everyone. I am back for this week’s article in my new Intro to Vintage series. If you have not yet read the first article please go and read the first part about the metagame where I play Vintage or you maybe a little confused about the article. http://cardshark.com/content/view_article.asp?article_id=3764 .

Ok, so what fun Vintage deck is on the menu for this week? Well that’s sort of a riddle. We will see if you can get it. I will try to check the forums to see if anyone is on the right track or not. Anyway, so the riddle is about the deck’s name. I have been talking about building this deck for some time now to all of my friends but it was not until a few weeks ago that I actually got all of the cards to complete the deck. During this time there were many jokes about the deck and it earned a nickname from all the harassment that I received. So the clue I will give you is “the Kamigawa Block.” I am not really sure if that is too easy because my friends are the ones who came up with the name.

If you do not know the name yet maybe the decklist will help so here’s the list.

Do you know the name?.dec:

The deck actually plays very similar to a White Weenie or W/U Fish build that you might see. I got the idea actually from the past Extended season. At one of the first big Extended tournaments there was a Vial Affinity deck that took first place that played main deck Meddling Mage

s. I really liked the idea of Vialing in the mages and then I thought that there were many different things that could be Vialed in that could provide problems for people especially in the environment that I play in. There were many different creatures that have good effects and most of them made it into the deck. Come on now, you can’t tell me that Vialing in a Meddling Mage

in response to someone playing something so then that spell fizzles isn’t good. Well, it actually isn’t. I, however, did not know that doing that was illegal until I looked it up on magicthegathering.com. So sadly the whole purpose of the deck was ruined. Meddling Mage

simply is not a counterspell. The deck is actually quite good though even with the main purpose being gone.

Why is the deck good? Let’s take a look at the Card by Card Analysis to see.

Lion/Isamaru – This deck is supposed to be a very aggressive deck that disrupts your opponent enough to allow you to win. These two cards do not disrupt but they are very aggressive. Two power for one mana is very good.

– Every opponent has to play their spells to be able to win so if you say that they cannot play one then it drastically alters how they have to play because they have to kill the mage before they can play their card. Overall, this is one of the strengths of this deck. This card helps a great deal against combo decks because the combo usually doesn’t work if they cannot play all the cards for it.

The other card that I wanted to mention is Kira, Great Glass-Spinner. If you are facing any removal heavy deck she works wonders. The only reason that she is not main deck is because she does not have synergy with the Jittes that are in there.
