Analyzing the YGO Game: Butterfly Dagger - Elma
by Nathan Aldana

So, yeah, another article. Hooray, time to analyze another of the combo decks available to the game. Elma decks.

Butterfly Dagger - Elma
Magic

A monster equipped with this card increases its ATK by 300 points. When this card is destroyed and sent to the Graveyard while equipped to a monster, this card can be returned to the owner's hand.

Elma, on its own, looks pretty useless, harmless, even. After all, who on Earth would turn this pitiful common from the Japanese game into a /SUPER RARE/ for the English game, and restrict it to one?!

Anyone sane.

On its own, the card is rather harmless, yes...But let’s throw in some other cards...say..Gearfried.

Gearfried the Iron Knight
4 Star
Warrior/Effect
1800/1600
Any Equip Card this card is equipped with is automatically destroyed.

Congrats. We now have an infinite loop. Elma is destroyed, goes to the graveyard, and can be immediately returned to hand.

´´Well what use is that?´´, you might ask.

As anyone who plays any TCG knows, infinite loops usually have a way to exploit them, Elma definitely follows such a pattern. Lets throw in..Royal Magical Library.

Royal Magical Library
4 Star
Spellcaster/Effect
0/2000

Each time you or your opponent activates 1 Spell Card, put 1 Spell Counter on this card (max 3). You can remove 3 Spell Counters from this card to draw 1 card from your deck.

Oh ho ho. Now we have an infinite Card Draw loop. One could draw their entire deck in a single turn, possibly unstopped. In an Exodia deck, this would pretty much be game right there, as they draw their entire deck, and just happen to have all 5 pieces of the Exodia creature in hand.

a sample deck for such a goal could be..

Elma Exodia

Monsters (19)
5x Exodia Pieces
3x Royal Magical Library
3x Gearfried the Iron Knight
3x Iron Blacksmith Kotetsu (to Tutor for the Dagger)
2x Spirit Reaper (for defensive purposes)
Witch of the Black Forest (Creature Tutor)
Sangan (Creature Tutor)
Fiber Jar (reset, if needed)

Magic (15)
Butterfly Dagger - Elma
2x Reload
Upstart Goblin
Card Destruction
Pot of Greed
Graceful Charity
Premature Burial
Monster Reborn
Painful Choice (another, if risky tutor. can also be used with backup soldier to grab exodia pieces)
Harpies Feather Duster
Heavy Storm
3x MST

Traps (6)
Call of the Haunted
Imperial Order
Ring of Destruction
Mirror Force
2x Backup Soldier

The deck focuses on tutoring out the combo, and quickly blazing through the deck to grab the needed exodia pieces. It’s not a terribly viable deck in the currently Hand-D dominated US environment, but once rolling, the deck can be quite terrifying to watch in action.

Another application for Elma is in another endless combo loop. This time, with Morale Boost, and Fire Princess.

Morale Boost
Continuous Magic

Each time a player equips an Equip Spell Card, that player's Life Points increase by 1000 points. Each time an Equip Spell Card is destroyed or removed form the field, inflict 1000 damage to the Life Points of the controller of that Equip Spell Card.

Fire Princess
4 Star
Pyro./Effect
1300/1500
Inflict 500 points of Direct Damage to your opponent's Life Points each time you increase your own Life Points.

Once more, the idea is rather straightforward, abuse the infini-loop, with every equip gaining you life, then losing it again moments later, to do an infinite amount of damage to your opponent. Pretty nasty in theory, but again, a bit too slow for serious tourney play atm. Nonetheless, I'll offer a casual decklist, added into a Burn deck for a slight bit more ability to do damage without necessarily drawing the combo.

Elma Princess Burn

Monsters (18)
3x Fire Princess
3x Cannon Soldier
3x Gearfried
3x Kotetsu
3x Stealth Bird
Witch
Sangan
Fiber Jar

Magics (15)
3x Last Will (with the cannon soldiers, these let us tutor for key cards)
3x Messenger of Peace
Butterfly Dagger - Elma
2x Reload
Upstart Goblin (its card draw, and with the combo, who /cares/ if you have to do an extra thousand? :) )
Card Destruction
Graceful Charity
Pot of Greed
Monster Reborn
Premature Burial

Traps (7)
3x Gravity Bind
Call of the Haunted
Ring of Destruction
Imperial Order
Mirror Force

The deck stalls with Gravity Binds and messengers, while tutoring and burning for key combo cards, at which point it lays waste to opponents with sheerly insane amounts of burn

The final infinite combo involves the Magical Marionette creature.

Magical Marionette
5 Star
Spellcaster/Effect
2000/1000

Each time you or your opponent activates 1 Spell Card put 1 Spell Counter on this card. Increase the ATK of this monster by 200 points for each Spell Counter on this card. Also you can remove 2 Spell Counters from this card to destroy 1 monster on the field.

As you see, there’s no upper limit. We can put an infinite amount of counters onto him. Once he's at that level, a single attack will murder an opponent. And with his effect, clearing the creatures off the field is a cinch.

´´But wait!´´, you say. ´´He can just use Mirror Force on me!´´

That’s true, unless you also include a card pretty much built for this deck.

Mega Ton Magical Cannon
Normal Magic

Remove 10 Spell Counters on your side of the field. Destroy all cards on your opponent’s side of the field.

Tada. Field cleared. Massive damage Marionette can now lay waste to your opponent in grand style.

So, once more, let’s come up with a deck.

Marionette Elma

Monsters (18)

2x Magical Marionette (it’s a tutorable win condition, so we dont need the maximum)

3x Nimble Momonga (deck thinning)
3x Gearfried
3x Kotetsu
3x Spirit Reaper
Witch
Sangan
Cyber Jar
Fiber Jar

Magics (16)
3x Mega Ton Magical Cannon
3x MST
Butterfly Dagger - Elma
Upstart Goblin
Card Destruction
Pot of Greed
Graceful Charity
Premature Burial
Monster Reborn
Change of Heart
Harpies Feather Duster
Raigeki

Traps (6)
Call of the Haunted
Imperial Order
Ring of Destruction
Mirror Force
2x Torrential Tribute

A slightly more aggressive deck, here, there’s no stall about it. Just pure tutoring, card draw, and trying to grab combo pieces.

With these 3 decks, perhaps it’s a bit more apparent why the rarity of the Dagger was changed in the English version. Have fun with these decks, or tweak ’em if you like, after all, what’s the fun of playing a tcg, if you don’t get to try your own ideas? :)
