CardShark Content - Nathan Aldana (6/9/2004)

So, Fifth Dawn is here, and as Wizards has said, the set is an actual attempt to create a combo set. For combo lovers like me, this is sheer joy inducing news. Problem is, making the set actually go.

But then, as anyone who's been paying attention to the online scene knows, two deck ideas have already been suggested for the new format, Fireworks, and Fruit Loops. Unfortunately, with the advent of Clamp's banning, Fireworks was essentially killed before it could even start. However, the viability of Fruit Loops still seems viable, so, in this article, we shall cover the basics of this new deck archetype.

But first, for those new to the idea of combo, we'll first cover the 3 basic parts of the deck structure, and point out those parts within the decks as well. A good combo deck has 3 parts.

Mana Producers : pretty obvious. These are the cards that give combo the mana they need to function.

Engines: The heart of a combo deck, there are the card/s that make up the loops or

Spout/Win Condition: the outlet through which the deck uses its extra resources, usually ending the game with this card.

So, lets get into the fun part. Analyzing the deck!

Fruit Loops
The deck is rather simple at base, but it has a lot of ways of combo completion. First off, lets examine the main parts.

These two cards are in about every build of the combo, they make up the main deck engine.

The Deck so far would run as so. You get out a Krark Clan ironworks, once you have a few other artifacts (6 or more, to be exact) ready, and sac those artifacts to bring out the incubator, fire it, and bring out a truckload of Myrs. Here's where the fun begins.

Okay, so, we have the Myrs out, and the deck thinned tremendously. We can either wait and swing with a gigantic truckload of Myrs for the kill, but as anyone who knows the metagame will tell you,. this strategy is so susceptible to Goblin Sharpshooter

Well, on the upside, this combos nicely with Incubator. Incubator goes off, all the Myrs coming into play set untaps on the stack, then you simply respond to those untaps by sacking a myr each time, slowly going down the stack and milling your opponent to death.

On the downside, the Station is painfully susceptible to artifact hate, and thus, they can simply destroy it and leave you with no way to take advantage of your myr stockpile. Plus, this has to be in play before going off, or else the stack resolution won’t happen. There's also the slight weakness to a Myr targeted Echoing Ruin

Upsides here? well, it’s a rather simplistic engine, and it’s a lot less susceptible to hate, even if they do cast Oxidize

or the like, you can still sac the myrs in response and fire off the cannon, and since the sac effect doesn’t resolve until the end of the effect, yes, you can trigger this thing 20 times in a single turn.

On the downside, you have to have 40 mana in your mana pool to trigger this enough times for the kill, and the creatures sacked to do it, means that Disciple will murder you if you don’t deal with it first, upping the mana count needed to at least 42.

Upsides? It’s a VERY effective, time tested mana spout. Plus it just has style.
Downside? Well, for one, you need a red mana floating somewhere. Two, its also disciple vulnerable as you build mana up.

Probably the most effective spout the deck can afford, combining this with the incubator to rip all land from the deck, the charbelcher can then be fire for a massive 30+ damage shot of Belching goodness, as it will reveal your entire library in one terrifying blast.

It does have downside though, mainly that it can be oxidized in response to the Incubator going off, leaving you without a spout to blast with.

With that in mind, lets write up a decklist.

The deck is aimed quite simply, at setting up the Krark/Incubator combo, then using the resulting mana to fire one of the most efficient kill conditions we have available. Done right, the deck can go off by 3rd off 4th turn, making the deck appear to be at least viable for t2 tournament play. Whether or not it really is, will be found out soon enough when Fifth Dawn becomes tourney legal. For now, it is a deck concept and potential archetype, that looks to have a lot of potential. I plan to run it myself when the set becomes tourney legal, hopefully a lot of others will at least give the deck a go as well. I encourage it, hope my article gave you some useful information on a fun and interesting new decktype,
