Elf Apocalypse - Patrick Martinez (2/13/2014)

I have had a love affair with elf decks since I started playing Magic in high school (12 years ago or so). What's not to like? Elf decks can be a lot of fun and they're extremely powerful, as Luis Scott Vargas showed us in Pro Tour-Berlin 2008; LSV won the $40,000 grand prize with one of three elf decks that made it to the top eight year. There aren't all that many tribal decks that have seen that kind of success. Elves were the deck to beat back in the day, that is until we lost Glimpse of Nature

was the tool we elf players needed in order to be competitive. Before it was banned, this card was responsible for combo kills as early as turn two in professional tournaments. It is a one-drop sorcery that states "whenever you cast a creature spell this turn, draw a card." With a Glimpse in play, elf players could continually fill the board with elves that tap for mana, all in one turn; they would then end the game on that same turn typically with a Grapeshot

(I'm looking at you, Gavin Verhey), but I'm not convinced. So until Wizards prints us a suitable replacement, or lifts the ban, we will just have to forget about turn two combos and build an entirely different deck.

The first thing you might notice is that there are twenty one-drop elves. They are the backbone of this deck, and serve a very important purpose: mana ramping. It is rare that you will have a turn one go bye and not have an elf to play, which typically sets us up for three-drops or small combos on turn two. The next turn we can either set up the board for a turn four victory, or win it all right then and there.

Here's how an ideal game would play out:

is our win condition versus decks that counter spells.

I have had a lot of success in tournaments with this deck (in other words, I don't lose). The other players cringe at any FNM tournament I walk into, because they know that there will be an elf apocalypse coming soon, from which there is no escape. It combos out faster than most combo decks, hits harder than most creature heavy decks, and has a good sideboard for control decks. Am I testing this deck against Pro Tour Professionals, at my local FNM in Oklahoma? Ha ha, no. Could this deck even win a PTQ? Maybe if it had Glimpse of Nature
