Ten from M10 - Phil Bohn (9/13/2009)

Recently, as in “as of this writing”, I went to the beach with my family. I brought along my friend Joe who brought with him a box of M10 boosters. Throughout the week he was with us, we did a series of Winston Drafts, my first exposure to the format. In each of the games I played, I went three or four colors, mostly just to try out a wide spectrum of what cards could do and because there was a multitude of “jank” in the draft, let alone the set as a whole. In this article, I’m going to talk about 10 of the cards that made my eyes widen and that made a massive impact on the games I played. Note: I will not be talking about Lightning Bolt

This one should seem obvious. While playing more than 2 colors in each of my games, mana fixing was crucial. Ponder

helped me get my colors fixed by turn 2 every time I drew it in a game. Fantastic card, great ability, great cost.

Once again, this should seem obvious. Two life always seemed arbitrary when it came to thinning my deck. Also, it came in handy as a finisher on multiple occasions. The cost, while a bit intensive, didn’t feel like a problem to me. It was a fun card to play and the card advantage I got out of it was priceless.

When, like me, you play multiple colors (because it’s awesome), color fixing is crucial. The expanse is a common and a darn good one at that. Any hand that had two or three of my three or four colors in it was easily fixed by a Terramorphic Expanse

. People may knock it for being too slow, but I’ve always found it useful, though more so in Limited then Constructed.

One of the best cards to use for the all-important “alpha strike”. When games came down to creature attrition, this is a great card to break on through. I even used it as a win condition (or finisher, whichever term you like best) in one of the draft decks I made. Swarm the board with creatures and play Sleep

to swing for the win. Very rarely can an opponent recover from this kind of crazy swing. Not to mention, it gives you two turns to win. If your opponent can’t respond in time, the game is yours, my friend.

A really fun card to play that can really stall your opponent. It definitely makes them think twice about attacking at least. Not to mention, at three mana for a 7 toughness creature is great. It certainly is no Wall of Denial

The ZZ Top reject turned out to be an awesome card. Getting a wolf every turn then turning those wolves into removal proved invaluable to my board position. Plus with Cemetery Reaper

, if my opponent had no creatures out or in the graveyard, I could kill one of my tiny little chumps and then turn it into a 3/3 zombie. A fantastic guy that is removal in green. Awesome all around.
