CardShark Content - Randy Villarica (2/3/2005)

You probably clicked on this article thinking that you were going to see yet another bacon, ahem, Beacon Blaster deck. Or you might actually have thought to see a decklist of some sort which you can snigger around with your friends and say, “I could have built it better than him!” If that is the case then you’re out of luck, for now that is. Oh don’t even try to scroll down bud. I haven’t even started the intro yet!

The Intro:

UG!

How’s that for an intro?

What is UG you say? Ug is the sound your opponents make when hit by a largish object, say a lumbering Colossus. Not to be confused by his younger brother Ugh© who runs around using Condescend

in his deck countering anything interesting. Ug© uses none of these tricky spells, in fact his strategy is simple, cast a lot of creatures and attack you, then on his turn cast some more creatures and do it again. Simple, straightforward, lacking any trickiness whatsoever. If you’re wondering what the c inside the circle means, yes that is a copyright symbol so don’t even think it!

: Wake up! You’re DEAD!

Ug first came into being when I met my first Blue Green Control Deck. My opponent, a sweaty kid sitting across from me taking up roughly half his side of the table, was playing some deck that I had not seen before. In fact, I did not see him cast a single permanent on his side for a long while but he sure kept me from casting mine. At the time I was playing Tooth and Nail

(keep the boos down to a minimum please) and was happily casting anything that my little heart desired and he would counter it, every single one. I swear, the longer the game went and the more spells he countered the larger and sweatier he was getting. For fear of ending up like the unfortunate guy on this card (editor’s note: This was linked to Chub Toad

! Ug! The sound one makes when one is choking, the sound of all hope fading. On his turn he picks up the top and activates it again, looking at the top three cards of his library greedily, finally picking the third card, his piggy little eyes aglow with delight.

“Uh oh”, I thought to myself, “this is it.”

He taps first one, two three...eight lands total (he had 10 lands by this time, through Kodama’s Reach and other associated trickery) and loudly exclaims, “Ruuuuuuuuuuuude Awakening

!” Like that, exactly like that. How rude! It was then that Ug came into being. The first thing he said was a sad commentary on my state of affairs, he said in his caveman-sounding voice “Lands wake up and attack. You dead.” Uh, yeah. I really needed that. In any case we struck up a partnership and we went through a few ideas, simple ideas, unimaginative ideas. And that was when I first met Ug.

in the deck, so there it is. I thought we could use lands because you kind of need lands to cast spells, Ug thought differently but I was able to persuade him in the end.

So what exactly does it do? Well it gets lots of mana for one, between the Birds, Sakura and Kodama’s Reach you’re bound to reach a lot of mana by turn 3, enough for a nice Plow Under

. The Beacon creates chump blockers/attackers and there you have it. Plow makes sure that you know what your opponent is drawing for two turns, also hampers their mana production. The Shamans are there obviously to take care of pesky artifacts like Oblivion Stone

and associated other foolishness like that. The Swords make your Birds 2/3 attackers that can draw you an additional card and ping for 2; with evasion this is certainly good. The Swords really shine when Meloku is on the board. More flying creatures means possibly more unblocked attackers to attach the Swords to, more card draw, more damage. Rude Awakening

is an alternate win condition since you are going to end up with a ton of land; also the Beacons really start churning up a lot of ground blockers/attackers, as they get cycled back into the deck this is an ever-present danger for your opponent to deal with. ; it is a great combat trick as well to bring down a larger blocker. 1/1 spirits or illusion tokens suddenly become all 3/3, 2/2 lands suddenly become 5/5, it’s too good to pass up! Ug was concerned that it was going to be too tricky but I pointed out the lack of counterspells in the deck and he seemed to think it was “ok”. We both share a loathing for Blue control as you can tell.

is also an alternative, a 5th copy of a card almost, to draw you the win condition or key card you might need at the time. Any creature equipped with the Swords means that the Blue player will have a tough time trying to deal with a resolved Swords so try to bait their spells into countering cheap pieces.

Of course I have outfitted the sideboard to deal with the dominant decks in my area and as such you will need to change pieces as you have need of them. A resolved Troll Ascetic

In any case, I would have liked to have said that Mr. Toad (my nickname for the control player; in case you didn’t click on the link above now would be a good time to do it) never did show up again with his deck. Until he does me and Ug stand ready to face the challenge!
