. It darted here and there like an artist’s flight of fancy taken wing. It was an idyllic scene, nothing marring the peaceful azure of the lake. Stones marked their places like sentries, jutting islands breaking the powder blue surface. The dragonfly floated a while on the water until a sound like stone grinding on stone startled it and in a flash it took to the air, its wings beating furiously.

’s entrance moved haltingly as if unwilling to let go its hold on its captives but with a wrenching effort it suddenly slid to the side revealing a secret passageway. The bedraggled group dragged themselves out into the bright sunlight and squinted against the noonday sun beaming overhead. Lady Azami carefully picked her way across the newly created exit and took stock of their situation. She alone among those that survived was in any good condition, her hair perfectly set in a myriad of swirls, her eyeglasses imported from the Araba at ruinous expense set perfectly straight. In fact, if not for the haggard faces that looked up at her and the devastation that surrounded them she could have been taking a midday stroll. Minamo

, School at Water’s Edge, or what was left of it, lay in pieces its once proud towers now diminished. Some great historian long forgotten once said, “Its students graduate the school and enter history.” Those words could not have rung any truer. Of its once numerous students only a handful remained, Jushi apprentices, wizards in training. Their training was at an end and they would have to face the harsh realities of a world without the security of the school. Death had come to visit the halls of Minamo

As Lady Azami was making her way to the Great Library she passed Headmaster Hisoka’s office. She briefly stopped at the door about to come in when she heard voices from within. “With every passing day, the kami shape our world to suit their will. I, for one, would not let them succeed,” said a voice raised in anger. “Minamo

. “The Soratami see all, Hisoka, that precious scroll you had hidden at the temple of Shizo, the expedition to Miren. Your actions are not unknown to us. Your very thoughts betray you; make sure that you do not act on them.” He said. “You need to see to your guests now, I am leaving for my palace in Oboro. We shall speak of these matters later.” The tall Soratami glided towards the door and Azami quickly hid in the shadows until he had passed. She knew now that she could not confide her mission to Headmaster Hisoka as he was nothing more than a Soratami pawn in their great scheme for power. It was then that the first threads of disloyalty started to worm their way into her subconscious. It was the first time that she felt truly alone.

which had been summoned to protect the academy had since fallen to the assailants. How and why the ogres and yamabushi were working together she did not yet know or care, all she wanted was to get to her precious scrolls. She had spent a lifetime amassing the knowledge hidden within and to lose them at this point was unthinkable, in fact even unforgivable. No, she would not lose them now; she had worked too long and too hard for that to happen.

She flung the doors to her offices inward and looked briefly at the huddled students cowering behind her table. She paid no attention to them as she started rifling through her personal stock of scrolls unrolling bundles and throwing some on the ground, searching frantically for one bundle in particular. With this in hand she opened a passage that led directly to the very foundations of the academy. The students at first looked at each other then hesitantly followed, closing the secret passageway as they went. They felt the rumbling from above even at that depth and as they reached the very last step a howl of bloodlust made its way down to them. Azami knew that they would be discovered eventually if they did not find a way to escape, yet there was no physical way out. The ogre’s henchmen would surely be guarding the front entrance in hopes of ensnaring any hapless students foolish enough to go that way. She had no escape, except....yes! She stood fumbling with the contents of her bundle and hurriedly unwrapped the scroll at her feet. The spell required a heavy toll, a human life in exchange for safe passage through the kakuriyo except this one was not to move one through space but through time. She quickly straightened and took out the pithing needles from her hair and as she muttered the incantation under her breath thrust it into the spine and neck of one of the unknowing students. The student stood there, immobile as the spell wove its fine threads around him and a shoal of blue fish kami appeared, enveloping the powerless student. As his essence was consumed a funnel appeared, growing larger and larger and with a backwards glance at the remaining students Azami flung herself towards the consuming vortex followed closely by the remaining students. As the void took them she neither felt guilt nor pleasure at her actions. She knew that her mission was of the utmost importance, the knowledge she held and the knowledge yet to be found. That student was not the first person that she had killed; neither would he be the last. The quest for ultimate knowledge. To this end she would proceed by any and all means.

Time is different in the spirit world than it is in the human world. In the journey through the spirit realm Azami saw her life laid out before her like a tapestry. Here she saw the first time her father had shown her how to fly a kite. There she could see the first time she had met a kami. At the time she thought that this was a powerful and benevolent spirit able to grant all her wishes. It was then that the burning desire for knowledge was born in her. It was then that the need for understanding was burned into her soul. In another moment she saw again Hisoka’s defiance against the ambassador Meloku. A day passes in the kakuriyo and years fly by in the human world though this is not felt by those journeying between worlds. In traveling between worlds she had glimpsed a being of overwhelming intellect, he was to this world what she was to hers, a guardian of knowledge. As she met his eyes briefly he opened his mouth and said one word and that was when time suddenly stopped.

Azami stepped forward onto solid ground. She blinked once to dissipate the cloud of confusion that threatened to overwhelm her. One moment she was hurtling through the space between worlds the next moment she was back where she had started. The moss had overgrown the slick walls of the passageway and the cavern had an air of something long dead as in a tomb. Some of the foundation stones were cracked with age and the dust lay thick and undisturbed on the stone floor. No sign of murdering ogres or crazed yamabushi cut through the quiet of the room and she knew that her spell had worked. As she turned around to find the secret exit, the rest of the survivors likewise stepped forward into existence and with bewildered gasps started to mill around the room, trying to make sense of it all. They cowered in fear when they saw her standing there and she said, “Don’t worry; I won’t kill you unless you give me a reason to.” In truth she would sacrifice each and every one of them to reach her goal.

A stray beam of sunlight brought her back from her reverie as she took in the ruined facade of the academy. She left the students to find food and water for them as she surveyed the damage. Her footsteps echoed in the empty halls as she moved from room to room, then suddenly there was a sound of metal clicking on stone as her foot hit something and set it skittering across the marble floor. She picked it up and looked at it curiously. It was a jitte, fine traces of filigree on the handle. She felt the remnants of power from the one who had wielded it and felt that it would be of some use later. She put it inside her kimono as she continued her examination of the various rooms.

and her narrow escape from the carnage yet her desire for knowledge was undaunted by time. “Know one part of the name, obsession begins. Know two parts, paranoia sets in. Know three parts, madness descends. Know all, and only the kami know what will become of you.” She lectured to her eager apprentices. She had taken over their tutelage now and as she turned towards the subject of her lecture she gathered the magic to her hands and it glowed a bright blue. She continued her tender ministrations on the creature pinned to the large marble table like a helpless butterfly. She dug her fingers into the creature’s skin and it let out a moan and started gibbering in an unknowable language. She had searched long and hard to acquire the knowledge required to call and trap a kami, this particular kami in fact. Like her journey had taught her, this one kami held all the knowledge of the spirit world. Names held a special power over their owners, much more so for the kami and she had used this knowledge to call and bind the spirit. The name was incomplete yet even with that she felt strange new powers flowing from her, what more would she have if she knew it all? “Let us begin again”, she said almost nonchalantly as she dug her fingers deeper into the creature’s hide. As it lay there writing in agony she bent down and whispered, “My name is Lady Azami Ozu...what...is your name?”
