Revenge of the Mana Dorks - Randy Villarica (7/28/2010)

When ROE first came out, everyone was gawking at the super-sized Eldrazi themselves, often overlooking the Eldrazi-enablers. I instantly took a liking to the little buggers mostly because people didn’t really see them as all that playable or only saw them as a means to an end, that end being mana acceleration to cast a large Eldrazi. Most people don’t look at a 0/1 creature and really think of it as much of a threat. This made the Eldrazi-enablers the perfect ingredients to my new concoction.

For reasons unknown, I started calling Eldrazi Spawn “mana dorks” as they were 0/1 they weren’t going to be doing any damage and when sacrificed they produced mana (therefore the moniker “mana dorks”). Here’s the decklist:

s are both mana accelerants as well as chump blocker generators enabling you enough time to set up. Also, let’s not miss the interaction with a very special artifact. We’ll talk about this later. The Ascensions you usually want to cast when you reach the critical mass of 7 or more on your side of the board and they are ready to attack. Turn 7 or more (recommend more unless they are tapped out, no instant removal) creatures sideways, yes including the Birds and you have 35 or more damage out of nowhere with Birds and 0/1 all triggering the Ascension during the attack phase.

I like to think only costs 2 mana, as soon as he hits the table since you retain priority you can immediately activate his first ability and cast some more spells out of your hand in the 2 slot or more if you have accelerants like Birds, Battlements or mana dorks. This gets him out of Bolt range immediately. His 2 abilities are both relevant since he can create a 3/3 body for attack/defense, untap 2 lands for additional mana or the best ability which is an Overrun

master’s Ascension only when you’re ready with your army. If you have 3 mana open and nothing to cast in the early turn, by all means get this enchantment on the field. Silly as it may sound, if you have Birds out and don’t need the mana, attacking with a 0/1 in the air will still give the enchantment a counter. Same holds true for a mana dork.

c) No you don’t need to amass 7 or more attackers all at once before casting this. You can cast this early, attack with Nest Invader

to come online then fly in unblocked. If you want to pound the ground with 5/6’s that’s ok too since there aren’t many creatures that could trade 1 for 1 with these guys and still live. Normally you’re pushing lethal damage that they have to block in order to survive, wiping out most if not all of their creature base.

Lastly I’ll mention some possible matchups and how to deal with them.

Jund Matchup

For Jund, you want to get those mana dorks out early to keep their attackers at bay. Turn 3 Predator/Hatcher is crucial here though a turn 2 Nest Invader

Vampires Matchup

Against Vamps you can ignore early damage to build up an army to swing for lethal on turn 5 or you can hold back and chump until you stabilize. Watch out for their hand disruption and try to get as many cards out on the table as you can. Mana acceleration is a blessing in this case. boarded in to sweep them away. It was hard fought but I was in it until the end.

So until next time, I hope that I have inspired you enough to show that homebrews aren’t all that bad. To me they represent a time when people came up with their own decks and they owned those decks, built them, tweaked them, put it all manner of “tech”, and put a lot of thought and effort into each piece.

No, I don’t have anything against people that copy tournament winning decklists from the internet. I refuse to drop the “n” bomb in this article, heh. What I’m really trying to say can be condensed to two points. One, you don’t need to have the best deck to have a fun game of Magic and still be competitive at some level and two, the homebrew of yesterday could turn out to be the tourney winner of tomorrow.

So yeah, keep on brewing and making those crazy decks that no one has ever seen. Here’s to your deck busting a hole in the metagame and taking Top 8. Cheers!
