CardShark Content - Rob Chesley (4/5/2006)

I love Magic Online. I love playing in games anytime of day with any format I choose. I also love to play Mirage on Magic Online, and I really can’t wait for more older expansions to be released on the system. I think this is a step in the right direction for WoTC. Many players are reluctant to get on Magic Online because there isn’t access to the same kinds of cards in the paper world. I also want to mention how much I love sanctioned events and I hope they make the following changes to Magic Online as soon as they can.

First, they need to make the Classic format a real true to form format for Magic Online. Right now, it’s just freeform restricting you to 4 of any card that isn’t a basic land. The classic format needs a banned and restricted list. Right now as the format sits, it is very unhealthy, due to the fact that four Skullclamp

and four Disciple of the Vault

can be played in any deck. Realizing that Wizards created the format for casual games, I can see why they haven’t banned or restricted anything yet. But I know I can’t be the only one who would like to see a competitive and thriving format like Classic exist online. Here are some of my suggestions. I think it should mimic the paper world; having either a banned list like Legacy or a restricted list like Vintage. I would start with Vintage cards that are restricted in the format, which includes:

That list should be a good starting point for R&D to make serious strides toward a viable metagame for online Classic. If I were in charge of it I would have a restricted list as opposed to a banned list (to make it more than online Extended plus Mirage). Where the above list was a starting point, here is an updated list:

That should be the restricted list for online Classic, and I feel this is a good starting point. It gets people to build other decks besides Madness and Affinity (but more importantly lets them still get creative). I also believe that this format would be very interesting to play in. The only other card I would suggest for the list is Fact or Fiction

decks less rampant. Also I think that the Jitte would come under consideration too, if Wizards deemed it necessary to help casual players to take on the format for their own. Possibly restricting older, hard to get Invasion block cards might help gain it some popularity with people who can’t necessarily afford to buy cards for online Extended.
