CardShark Content - Robert Hager (5/12/2006)

Dissension is upon us. What makes it such a great set? There is the Azorius (U/W) Senate guild. Now what makes this guild so good is more than just the control cards. We look mostly at the better cards in this set and the ones that seem most interesting to me. All the cards I will be talking about here can be used in drafting Azorius. Some are just better than others.

This is good for white if you don't have any flying creatures. You can gain 4 life with it and get a 2/1 unblockable, which is very useful for 3 mana. [Editor’s note: And unheard of in white.]

This is a powerful card for mill decks. If you’re drafting anything with blue in it, this is tool for milling a few extra cards from your opponent’s deck. This also returns to hand if you play a multicolored spell so this should be easy to use again and repeat the milling process.

AEthermage's Touch
Could this be any more revealing? I wish it was since isn't as good as it could be. It can be good because it gives you an extra creature that you need but otherwise you might reveal the top 4 cards and just get some spells or a chunk of land.

This isn't really meant for 1 creature. It works as a good combat trick. You prevent damage to one of your creatures blocking one the opponents creatures when your opponent is attacking and then you prevent the damage from one the opponents other creatures. This could turn a game around easily depending on what creatures are out in play and how big they are.

is only really good cause it allows you to gain life equal to the X you paid. You are probably not going be able to stop something huge with this, but it still could be good if you much of your land untapped.

Plumes of the Peace
This works well for immobilizing opponent’s creatures. The forecast ability isn't really good unless you only have 2 mana open and you can use it tap one of the opponent’s creatures to win the game. It doesn't look peaceful, but at least it keeps you from having to deal with one of the opponent’s creatures attacking you.

Rating the cards. Each card gets a rating of 1, 2, 3 or 4 stars. This is an easy way to give an idea on how good or how playable each card is. If a card gets 4 Stars, it is a first pick, a color changing card or a bomb that should be taken no matter what. 3 Stars is an overall good card, something that should be picked if you’re going that color, or maybe even splashed for. This card is good but doesn't have to be picked if you’re not going that color. This might be a first pick card but can be a second or even a middle pick sometimes.

2 Stars is an ok card. This is a middle of the draft pick. These cards can be played but aren't too good. These cards won't make you go a certain color and shouldn't really be picked unless they’re in your color or there isn't anything good left. A 1 Star card is a late pick card that you would never draft. A card just to leave in your sideboard.

, and Faith Fetter's. You should have by now picked at least 1 color or even 2. The best colors to splash for U/W would probably be red or black.

The Guildpact Pack with provide you with more creature removal, discarding cards and creatures that can do direct damage. You will want to pick some B/W cards for control such as making the opponent discard cards and removal, or pick U/R cards that will provide direct damage or bounce. You will be looking for cards like Shrieking Grotesque

. Now you should have picked at least 2 colors or even 3 of you ran out of stuff in your original colors. If you still have only gone 1 color, you’re not screwed but your deck might not look too good. With this pack you probably have taken either some good black, blue, white or red cards with some removal since there should be a fair amount going around.

Once you get to your Dissension pack this where you will your U/W cards with a good chunk of your creature removal or control and flying creatures. Once you’re done with your Dissension pack, most likely you will have a 3 color U/W/R or U/W/B deck. If you have gone either 4 or only 2 colors your deck might be still be good but it probably isn't as good.

Once you get it all down you can successfully draft Azorius. If you are more of the control player or like flying creatures then this is for you. Don't worry if you can't get enough removal, there should be plenty going around for U/W and if that fails at least you can get some strong flying creatures. Next time I will take a look at the Simic Guild.
