CardShark Content - Robert Hager (7/27/2006)

It came out sooner than I thought. Coldsnap, the latest Magic set, is here. This set was made to patch up the Ice Age block since Homelands didn't really fit in with Ice Age and Alliances. You do have to realize this is better than those sets, but compared to newer sets like Ravnica block, there aren't as many valuable cards in this one. This set also has some of the same flavor with some cards that are hardly playable or require you to use Snow Covered Lands. This set does have some beauty in blue and white though.

Is there anything that could make white good?

These are just like any other shackles except you can only stop them from blocking or using activated abilities. What makes this good is you can use 1 snow mana so they gain defender until end of turn so the creature can’t attack.. I would pick this like around 4th pick or even middle pick. This is pretty good for stopping creatures if you are using white in your deck. Do remember there will be plenty of better removal cards than this, so don't pick this first in a pack.

This give all your other soldiers +1/+1 and first strike. This works really well if you ever wanted to make a soldier deck for yourself but, in a draft it isn't that good. A 2/2 for 3 mana doesn't help much and not all of the creatures for white are soldiers. This is more of a middle pick rather than a 1st pick card. I would expect this to go around at least once or twice at a table unless there are some inexperienced players who might pick it.

Not all cumulative upkeep cards are bad. This is fairly good for white. It gives a creature +3/+3 for each age counter on it. This requires you pay 1 snow mana, which makes it pretty hefty. This isn't going to work on your creature until next turn once you start paying its upkeep cost. Both are reasons why this isn't super good. I would make this a middle pick. If you really wanted to you could pick it earlier but there probably would be something better to pick.

I don't know what this is supposed to be. [Editor’s note: It’s a young Cthulhu in a fur coat!] A 3/3 for 5 mana is an ok creature. What makes this is good is that whenever it is blocked, you draw 2 cards. This pretty powerful if someone is dumb enough to block him. Even if he dies the first time you still get to draw 2 cards. This is easily splashable so I would pick this first unless there is some better uncommon, rare or removal card in your color. This is fairly expensive so don't try to get more than maybe 2-3 in your deck since you will probably want bigger more powerful creatures. If you don't pick it first pick it might still go around at least once or twice.

This is really powerful. A 4/4 Flying creature for 3 mana is really good. There must be a catch right? Its cumulative upkeep of a discard is pretty expensive. Drawing cards is card advantage. This gives you that advantage by allowing you draw 2 cards and then put one of them on your library. Getting 1 card a turn is great except the cumulative upkeep cost on this is 2 mana. This is fairly expensive for getting 1 extra card a turn. This doesn't offer you much advantage with the upkeep costs except for getting a few extra cards. A 2/1 can easily be killed also. I would make this a middle pick. l? It stares at you in your hand. When it’s out in play it stares at the opponent and does nothing. A flying creature for 7 mana with power and toughness equal to the amount of snow permanents in play seems great. I don't think you could get at least 4-5 snow permanents in play before you play this. The one use for this is using it’s Snow-making ability. This makes his not as bad as he could be. I still see this as a too slow of card for most decks. I would draft him later in the draft.

The best strategies for drafting Coldsnap with White and Blue

Look for signals. This is very important in Coldsnap. This isn't like Mirrodin or some other block where it is less diverse and with more colorless cards. You do have to realize that you only get 1 snow land per pack so it makes cards with snow abilities harder to use. This makes getting the few snow mana you can fairly important. You want to hope you get something like Adarkar Valkyrie

aW5nIFNwaGlueA==, but that isn't very likely. There aren't a lot bombs in this set for blue or white so you’re probably going to have to look towards another color for a bomb or pick some sort of removal first like Frozen Solid

If you don't get a Valkyrie or Sphinx, then you’re going to most likely look for cards like Drelnoch

, etc. If you’re looking for big creatures that aren't rares and are bigger than a 3/3, you’re going to have to look towards black, red, or green to do that. If you want superior weenies then look for Boreal Centaur

s or not playing green then finding some white weenie if you need will do just fine. If you want mass removal that is common then look towards black or red.

In Conclusion...

Once you get this down you should be able to successfully draft white or blue. You will learn that many white cards are inferior to other colors like green and blue isn't that much better but that can't stop you from drafting either color. Next time I will look at the Red and Black cards in the set.
