CardShark Content - Robin Lee (10/26/2004)

After witnessing some of the good burn spells out there, I’ve actually loved playing type 1.5 to when lightning bolt and incinerate were fun to play and all you did was just burn them with forks and get to draw even more cards with wheel of fortune. Now I wonder if mono red burn can viable in this field. I wondered to myself if mono red burn is now viable out in the field. Though your probably saying stuff like “What if they gain life or other things like “Oh my! What about counter-spells?” In my opinion, March of the Machine decks will have problems against ravager and other arch-types and will make it that people may shy away from the deck. As long as ravager still runs rampant and is still one of the greatest tier one decks, Countering spells maybe rather difficult unless it is Blue/White that uses wrath of god: the grand daddy of creature removal. The only possible decks to win against ravager consists of a green base that involves heavy artifact hate, or another color base such as red white and black that has heavy removal effects.

So from This I have come up with a deck that is moderately rouge-like but provides some quite of a defense against this meta-game. This deck was put together by the finest burn spells and thrown together with massive creature removal.

3x Zo-Zu The Punisher

Reasoning: The main goal of this deck is to burn the person silly, You have your Removal spells when you feel that overwhelming beat-down problems will soon arise. The reasoning behind this is to just burn them to death, if they go too fast and your about to die, you throw out a removal spell so you live a little longer to burn them out. So why lava spike? For some crazy reason I like the fact of using lava spike with glacial ray. Though you need a lot of pieces, it’s like your taking 1/4th of their life already.

Against Ravager: The key here is to burn, if they are very huge threats: Such as cranial plating, you must burn off the creature on the stack; they have priority, so just play constructively. If you happen to have a burn spell use it sparingly, because many frogmites out in play is one heck of a pyroclasm. If they have ravager, try to race them, other wise you’re out of luck and you will probably loose the game.

This is a sideboard strategy since you can probably produce tons of mana with chrome moxes and are powered by the furnaces, try to accelerate the dragon and go for the win.

Against Tooth: When you play tooth, just realize that you are on a 5-7 turn clock. Try to beat them as fast as you can manage. This one is a game of luck and burn as much as you can!

+3 Zo-Zu The Punisher

The key after sideboarding is to rush the Zo-Zu, the thing is when he’s out turn 2, he’s just nuts against tooth, by the time they have enough mana to tooth they probably already have taken 6-8 damage from throwing down land. Go with the same strategy and hope for the best.

Against Mono Black Control

This deck has many possibilities and might prove to be a problem. If they go heavy on discard you’re technically screwed. If people run Cranial Extraction

and Blue/White control

Control decks are the specialty of this deck. Usually you create too many problems for them that they cannot handle it. Just keep the burning threats open and eventually they will run out of counters. Burn them out and you should win no problem. Since March needs a two piece combo, it will be pretty hard to cast March while your pummeling them with burn spells.

(If Blue//White or not)

You have a very high change of winning. The minute you cast Zo-Zu they already have problems because they need to build enough mana to counter spells and such. By using boil and flashfires, you destroy them so they have to restart and Zo-Zu will reign supreme

Against Fresh-maker// DC Green

Burn them to death, when there are too many creatures on the field, use a removal spell. This should be a rather easy win unless Fresh-maker has a Pulse of the Forge

That’s about it, it’s very rouge-like, I’m not sure if it will work in states, but it is sure one heck of an idea. Thank you for your time and consideration and I hope it wasn’t a waste of time.
