Magical Darwinism 2.0 - Artful Destruction - Rodney Hines (4/8/2012)

A quick intro, to reestablish what I'm theoretically trying to do with this article series. In honor of my favorite Magic column of all time, I'm trying to take a preconstructed deck straight from the store (well, more or less) and play some games, adjust a few cards, play some more games, adjust a few more cards, and play even more games, repeating the process until I have a deck that I enjoy playing and is mildly competitive. Standard disclaimer here: I'm not a great, or even a good (or even mediocre) player or deckbuilder. So, if your question is why am I doing this? Because I enjoy the analysis and playing and building. In short, I like Magic, I love this type of column, and I'm making it happen. Hope you enjoy this article as much as I do writing them!

The deck that I've chosen this time is "Artful Destruction" from New Phyrexia. It's a green/white splicer deck. Splicers are creatures (usually 1/1 on their own) who bring a 3/3 golem token to the party as well as granting extra abilities to golems on the field. These abilities are usually interesting from a combat standpoint (+1/+1, trample, first strike, regenerate) and lead to a variety of board states. Hopefully, anyway.

Unfortunately, not all of those cards are legal for Standard anymore, given that M12 is now among us. Artful Destruction was built when M11 was legal, so I've made a round of substitutions before playing a single game on MTGO. In real life, I have multiple copies of this deck, and one is still pure, unadulterated, uncut, and I've logged a few games with it. (I'm a big pre-con fan, in case you couldn't tell). I tried to make changes that either filled the same role (Cultivate

will do for me as well. It will also give me a better handle on what's the better ramp in the current metagame: creatures or spells to pull out lands. Creatures can bash face, but it's much harder to destroy my lands once they are in play. That's a topic that may bear watching over the course of this evolution. So...what else does the deck do?

Why, it puts out a lot of creatures! Several of the creatures are 2 for 1 card advantage in green/white (which is awesome!), and require more than one kill spell to put it completely out. Doom Blade

isn't quite as effective when targeting a golem and I still have the actual splicer. Granted, the golem is usually the threat, but I can still serve for 1! Multiple creatures per card = happy Rodney, and I'm fairly sure that it's a theme that I'll be pushing when I get to the trading card for card. There's also a metalcraft theme there that's lovely to see, and may or may not be used.

I've got several ideas for the deck, but let's see what we can do with what we've got before I get into any changing around.

, and I get savaged. It's appropriate that the first game I play on MTGO with a New Phyrexian deck loses quickly to poison counters. Ironic, don't you think? The mana came quick and fast, and I was swinging with a splicer plus golem on turn 4, but the flying gets me here.

. Delver type deck, and effective at what it does. But it did show me that there is a "combo" in my deck, although I'm pretty certain that better players than myself would call that synergy.

Way cool deck, and his list for it is better than anything I was able to put together along that concept. With that said, a deck that just vomits creatures onto the battlefield is a rough matchup for a deck that wants to hit 30 life then start clocking me 5 at a time. I end up winning the game in a race situation that just turns into me playing every card in my hand and alpha striking every turn. He had a Darksteel Juggernaut

that was pretty large, but having to attack each turn left him open to my entire army. Granted, he's gaining 5 life a turn, but I'm dealing 12 per turn by the end. He seemed a little mana flooded as well, hitting every land drop, every turn.

So, what did I like? I liked the deck dropping creatures all over the place. One of my favorite comic book characters is Juggernaut

. One of my favorite wrestlers is John Cena. Why? Because they both just power through whatever the opponent is doing. Granted, they can be beaten, and probably should be beaten more than they are. They just. Keep. Coming. Eventually, somebody gets Attitude Adjusted (Spine Spliced?) and the win is picked up for the good guys.

What did I not like? Well, the inability to interact with what my opponent is doing kind of irks me. I also don't like several of the random cards in the deck. Conversion Chamber

especially bothers me. I see what it's there to do. Recycling and spitting out golems that join the spliced army is definitely cute, but I'm not cool with investing 7 mana, 2 cards, and 2 turns just to recycle a golem into play. I'd rather just play another splicer of some sort in that spot. The Rampant Growth

s don't seem like they're really pulling their weight. While removing them would be increasing my reliance on mana dudes (which I'm not a fan of), in this particular deck I think I'd rather have the various myrs for the ramp, and 8 is enough. Yikes. So, I'll put something else in...maybe Druidic Satchel

? Yes...yes I think that I will have another Satchel. For all the reasons that Flores gushed over this card, I want it in my GW deck. Free life, free dudes, or free lands directly into play...what's not to love? Golemn Artisan and Phyrexian Hulk

Changes are there to give me more Army in a Can type cards. 2-for-1's are good, and there's a definite upswing in the number of 2-for-1's in Green and White these days, so it would seem a little silly not to take advantage of it. Basic in and out to hopefully improve how the deck wins and to try to make it do what it does more consistently. Next time, we'll take it for a test spin, see how we do with the fancy new upgrades. See you then!
