Quilltrip - Roland Guiscard (8/30/2008)

If you're like me, you're not one to shell out hundreds (or thousands) of dollars creating a super-awesome deck that can take you to the Pro Tour. You're quite happy and content to come up with, or borrow, a neat little deck that can do a few things you find entertaining, and you take it to your local Magic meets until people start fighting against it, its key cards rotate out, or you find something cooler. I'm a big fan of these one-trick ponies, these simple combo decks that allow for quick pick-up-and-play games where you don't need to know a lot about the intricacies of the deck, only that it works.

My favorite deck of this type was a Building On a Budget Deck that used Viridian Enchantress and Mesa Enchantress

the size of Godzilla and crush your opponent. It was easy to figure out, simple to run, and while not strictly a combo deck it was a lot of fun.

But not a lot of the budget decks put up since then have appealed to me. I'm all for a deck that follows a theme, but it needs to be able to win from time to time for me to like it, and it needs to be able to burst out and do something incredible if my opponent doesn't learn to answer me and answer me quickly. I honestly don't mind if the deck is vulnerable to counterspells and burn if it's fun to play, because I play to have fun, not to push for the tour. So without further ado, let me present my own budget deck along that theme, Quilltrip:

in hand and the mana to cast it so that you can Haste your way through the defenses. The rest of the deck is built around that, working to give you access to GGGR on turn 3, as well as feed your hand. Most of the cards cycle for either one net mana or less, and often you'll find that even if you mulligan aggressively(essential in this deck) you'll still be cycling three, four, even five cards in the early game to get your combo online as quickly as possible. So to go into the cards:

- All combo pieces, although the Wisps can be sacrificed to help you dig for a missing piece. If you didn't read about it already, the way this works is by tapping the Druid for mana, then putting a –1/-1 counter on the druid to untap it, and then use the mana produced and the –1/-1 counter to give Quillspike

/Streetwraith - All cantrips or cyclers intended to be thrown down on turn 1 or 2 to let you dig, and dig hard. I've had games where I mulliganed down to 4 or 5 and cycled several Wraiths or played multiple Baubles in order to find my combo pieces as soon as possible. The point of these cards is to ensure you have 60 cards in your deck but can dig towards the ones you want with a minimum investment of mana. Manamorphose

also helps out at times.

I find this deck to be very fun, especially for one that has only a single trick, since you can mulligan hard and still win, and sometimes through random chance you end up cycling through four or five cards on those early turns, which is exciting and fun to do. It's also neat to see the look in your opponent's eye when he sees you drawing eight cards before his third turn, and then he has to face down a 31/31 Quillspike

or Fire-Lit Thicket can help you ensure you get that GGGR on the third turn, but I find that 20 forests works just fine, since you want to limit your lands as you will only need to draw 3 during the course of the entire game to make the combo work.
