Red Deck Wins - Pauper - Roland Guiscard (5/20/2009)

I'm somewhat new to Pauper, but after trying out a few decks, I decided what I want to play is Red Deck Wins.

I've always been a big fan of Red Deck Wins. It's so simple and elegant in theory, yet so complex and effective in practice. ´´Blow Stuff Up´´ is always a viable strategy, and even in the common slot there are lots of good creatures and effective removal. So without further ado, here's my current deck:

If you can't tell, I got started using a decklist I found online, but I've expanded on it a lot through extensive playtesting. I think that this is the ´´right´´ build for me, and I want to explain why.

Main deck - This deck has a minimum of creatures and a maximum of burn. The idea is that you're killing everything that sets foot on your opponent's size, so your small, efficient men can rush through to hit hard for a few turns. Then you finish them off by going to the dome. In general I'd say the removal is used on creatures the vast majority of the time, and only goes to the dome if it would be removed by discard mechanics or when it brings about a win.

is a GREAT card, I just found that it was, more often than not, three mana for two power. This deck plays hard, and as such I rarely have much in my hand I can play, and I tend to play it during my opponent's turn. The Prowler is almost always three mana for four power, and the fact that it retains that four power without me having to play two spells per turn is very important. I also tried Hissing Iguanar

means my opponent loses eight life (assuming they have nothing to block with) and that just really puts them on the wrong foot. I almost never cast this without Convoke, unless I just need that last little bit to hit the dome.

, because it allows me to get lands off the top of my deck (the deck only needs three in play to work properly) and often lets me hit both the creature and the player. Yes, it only wins the clash when your opponent has a land and you have something that isn't a land, but the job of burn in this deck is primarily to carve a path anyway. That three to the dome is just gravy.

Sideboard - The original sideboard for this deck was, to be blunt, filler. I never found it relevant and I hardly ever boarded in anything. kills most common pro-red guys, and can go to the dome if they're using a Circle of Protection. It also functions as an additional piece of burn, which can be relevant if your opponent is running an anti-creatures deck.

- Yes, this card is the bane of my deck if played against me. Why do I have four of them in the sideboard? Because nothing makes a Warrens combo player cry like seeing his team disappear. I've also found it to be very relevant against people playing rogues/faeries, since I can often kill three or four of them without harming my men on the ground.

- This little guy does everything. He allows you to remove problematic Affinity guys, he allows you to get in just a little bit more damage if you are racing, and...The last ability has never come up, actually, since as I said my opponent can rarely keep anything on the board. But this is like having four extra cards in the sideboard, since it can play double-duty.

This deck plays hard and fast and mean. Everything and every creature is expendable in the pursuit of killing off an opponent. The goal of this deck is to come out hard with everything it's got in order to send men into the red zone and then burn out for the win. Don't be afraid to use a Lightning Bolt

on a small creature (even a 1/1) if it's in your way. The goal is to keep the pressure on constantly, forcing your opponent to expend resources to try and stop you. This deck is hell on combo decks or decks which focus on the midgame, but it has no midgame or late game. It's very hard to win after about turn seven or so unless you're just trying to dig into a Fireblast
