CardShark Content - Stanley Rutkowski III (12/3/2001)

With the extended season upon us, I adventured to Detroit for the First PTQ of the season. After play testing, I decided to play a Turbo Land type deck for the event. To give credit where it is due, thanks to my friends at the Outpost for their help in constructing the deck. I have made comments on the match ups, I left out the names of my opponents because I am sure that I have spelling errors in notes for each match up.

The Deck:

I don’t think that the engine of the deck needs much explaining. The basis of the deck has been written about many times over. The white was added to the deck to add the main deck disenchants to add consistency to the counter backup for the Trix match up. The volcanic Island

in the side board for a match up against control and the rage is for the mirror match up. After side boarding there are redundant ways to deal with the Trix match up. The extra feeders help with life gain against a sligh match up and help with life gain again in the Trix match up. Weaver won a match for me against a secret force deck.

to resolve, but no other pressure is applied. This match up was pretty much in my favor from the start. I want to give credit to my opponent, this was a fun match to play and a very pleasant opponent, the conversation was great during the match, I think that after game one we both realized that the match up favored my deck, but my opponent did not get discouraged. I can’t say the same for the match that was next to us. The two players were playing a Donate

match up. There was a younger player and an older player in the match. The younger player had the upper hand, and from watching from my match, the older player was making subtle mistakes for the mirror. The older player was trying to goat the younger player into making mistakes and making quite a spectacle of himself in the process. I felt bad for the younger player, but give him a lot of credit for not loosing his cool.

hit the table it was pretty much game over. Game three is my worst nightmare. Turn two he drops meddling mage naming Oath, turn three he drops meddling mage number two, by turn five all four mages are on the board and I have a vindicated treetop village in the graveyard. Needless to say, I am now 1-1 for the day.

1-1, 3-2

Round three:

I get to my seat and my opponent gets there shortly after I do. He asked my how my day has gone and I told him that I was having fun and played two decks I didn’t think I see today. He makes the small mistake of telling me that he just played and Oath deck and got crushed. I like conversation in a match, but I think he was giving away too much information. He even revealed his decks weakness to an Oath deck prior to seeing what I am playing. He is playing a G/U/B deck featuring Mystic Snake

appear. Game two I get a second turn Oath on the table and he played a Bird on turn one. He looks at his cards and tells me that he is pretty sure that I just won the game. He asked me to play the game out so that he could see how my deck works because he wants to be prepared for it future tournaments. I told him that I would play it out and then help him with Ideas to make his deck better. After the match he showed me the deck and I gave him a few suggestions. The major one was to add planar void to the deck since he was playing black and had birds in the deck. I also let him know that he gave me too much information at the beginning of the match. I let him know that conversation is good, but giving away your deck was not the best thing to do at a PTQ.

2-1, 5-2

Round Four:

The pairings for round four were posted and I am paired up against a friend from the Outpost. He is playing a sligh deck and I know that it has the potential to crush me from the get go. I also know that without outstanding draws I can gain control and there is not much he can do to break it. Game one he wins the roll and has pretty much a perfect draw. Turn on Jackal pup, turn two Jackal pup, Fanatic, turn three ball of lightning, fireblast, turn four land flame rift, fireblast. Ok, so now I side in my extra feeders and he gets perfect draw #2. A feeder did hit the board, but it was too little, too late. Wasteland

took care of my villages and the match was over. At least I had time to get some lunch.

2-2 5-4

Round Five:

Round five had me paired against a secret force deck. The deck had land destruction spells added, but the basic premise was to cast the force and beat down the opponent. This match up comes down to keeping the weaver on the board. I let the natural order for the force resolve in both games, resulting in “oathing” every upkeep. I transferred the counters from the feeder to the Weaver to keep a constant “fog” on the force and it’s minions. Without air support, Morphling

flew over for the victory. This is most likely one of the best match ups for my deck and the match was over very quickly. Luckily I cast Oath both games early. Game two I muliganed a hand I normally would keep to make sure I had a fast Oath for the win.

3-2, 7-4

Round Six:

In this round I was paired against a Meddling Rebel deck. Game one my early Oath was disenchanted, but my main deck disenchant took care of my opponents crusades. Treetop village held off the attackers until Morphling

came to the rescue in the air. Game two was a different story, again early meddling mages came to my demise. Two mages in the first four turns shut down my deck and crusaded guards pounded me to zero life. Game three started with a bang for me. Turn one: Tropical forest, exploration, Treetop village. Turn two: two more lands and a swing from the village, turn three another horn and more land, plus Oath resolved. Once Oath was on the table and Treetop beating down, he had to cast a creature. Oath again resulted in Morphling

and then beatings began.

4-2, 7-5

All in all I was pleased with the way the deck ran. I am still a little leery of the Trix match up because it can have brutal speed. The loss to sligh concerns me a little, but sligh just wins sometime. I have thought about the possibility of adding Aegis of honor to the deck for the sligh match up. Another possible card to add could be COP Blue for Morphling
