CardShark Content - Stanley Rutkowski III (12/27/2001)

Greetings and Happy Holidays to all. After going 4-2 last PTQ at Detroit with a Turbo Land variant and the slight shift in the metagame from GP Las Vegas, I decided to venture into a new deck type. While researching a deck, fellow Card Shark player (Al McCandelles) and I decided to play very similar decks for the event. While playtesting, we decided a few differences for the deck, but got very similar results.

and Shadowmage keeps the hand full for the upkeep, and lets you get to the cards for all situations. Mage stops decks in their tracks (as you can see with my match results below). Verdict is an amazing card, in play testing this card can just win games by itself. The tithe’s help with the shaky mana base. Now that I have played a tourney with the deck, make sure you have a source of white mana in your opening hand (more on that later). Round 2:
White weenie with a splash of red for removal

This round I play against a fairly new player to the tourney world. He tells me that this is his second tourney and does not have all the cards to make his deck perfect (he is playing pain lands over dual lands). His deck has life gain, but in the end can not deal with Masticore

Round Three:
Zombie-Go

Round three, there is a trial today as well, so I figure that the worst is that I loose this round and join the trial. After two rounds I have seen my deck run horribly and like a fine tuned machine, I am hoping that the latter stays for the rest of the day. Round three I am paired against a Zombie-go deck. Game one sees me getting an early verdict that he tosses a land to. His deck gets off to a slow start and I am swinging with a couple lynxes. I have a mage in my hand, but I can not tell what he is playing. He plays a shodowmage, but it becomes a staring match when I get a shadowmage of my own the next turn. Then Morphling

joins the show and that was the end of game one. I end up taking two damage in the course of the game and am 21 life.

Game two sees him having a visit from Mr. Mulligan and he ends up keeping a hand of four cards and is still land light. Unfortunately for himI have a hand with a couple verdicts and the mana to cast them. This game lasted a very short time because the verdicts resolved and my mages and infiltrators swung for the victory without any resistance. I guess I won’t be adding my deck to the trial

2-1, 4-2

Round 4:
Tradewind (G/U)

Game one sees me have a perfect draw having counterspells and mages. He tries to play an early tradewind (Having birds and elves for acceleration) but it gets forced and the next turn I play a mage set to the tradewind. Next he tries to play a winter orb, but again I force the orb and cast a mage set to the orb. (luck is on my side). The mages work at his life and then the lynxes join the party and it is on to game two.

Game two is fast. He starts out with a first turn bird and a second turn bird/elf. I don’t have mages for this game, but the lynxes are in numbers. He attempts a third turn Morphling

At the beginning of your upkeep, you may choose and discard a card from your hand. If you don't, sacrifice Masticore.2: Masticore deals 1 damage to target creature.2: Regenerate Masticore.
. Now I know that top eight is out of reach (68 people and six rounds leaves two losses in the dust) but the trial is already started so I decide to try and win some points back. Congrats to Steve (my opponent in this round) for making it into the finals.

s, unfortunately for him I have mages (plural) and when he shows me his hand for the grant I get to see all his good stuff to name the mages to. With his strategy thwarted, the mages serve for the win.

Games two and three have one thing in common, no land for me. Game three included two mulligans on my part and John serving for the victory.

2-3, 6-6 Drop.

All in all I still feel like this is a good deck, but I need to work on the mana base. The tourney was a lot of fun and a GR player did make the top 8 (Congrats Josh).

Again, thanks for reading and any questions or comments are welcome. Hope to see you all at the Chicago and Grand Rapids PTQ’s in January.
