CardShark Content - Stanley Rutkowski III (1/22/2002)

Today started like any other PTQ except for the pleasant fact that we did not have to travel a great distance this weekend. This weekend the PTQ was in my hometown. The version of “junk” in this report was built to deal with the metagame of Junk, Sligh, Donate

, Grow and Bug. After last week in Chicago, I found that my “junk” deck had a problem with “sligh” decks because they can come out of the gate way too fast. During the trip home and discussing the match up with John Honea and Al (you can read his articles on this site as well) we thought to have found a solution to the match up. The solution is Overgrown Estate

. This card becomes valuable late game as well in other match ups, but is the saving grace in the “sligh” match up. After play testing with the changes, some minor and the “tech” suggested by Al, I felt confident with my “junk” deck. The day began with 90+ people joining the PTQ tourney. Some of my notes are a little sketchy form the tourney because I found I was paying too much attention to my notes and not enough on the game from previous tourneys, so please forgive any gaps in the tourney report. , boa and monger all joined my side and the game was over quickly. Game three again saw an early Avatar from my opponent, but an early mystic enforcer helped slow the battle. With verdict and duress I got threshold quickly and spirit mongers and other creatures kept the avatar from ruling the board.

1-0, 2-1

Round 2: U-B-R Control.

This match up was all about the early disruption. Verdict and duress help me rid my opponent of his cards and swords got rid of the Finkles. Wasteland

at bay. Each game I was at 17 life while he lost.

2-0, 4-1

Round 3: Three-Duce

Game one saw my opponent have mana problems stemming from my wastelands and having a mana light hand. Once monger hit the table the game was won for my side. Game two saw fourth and fifth turn enforcers ruling the sky.

3-0, 6-1

Round 4: Sligh

Game one started with a blur of activity, but I withstood the early onslaught, losing boas and lynxes in the process, but the Estate showed up and stabilized the board for my side. Eventually, monger and enforcer joined the party and victory was mine. In came the COP:Red and second estate. Game two had the same rapid pace of game one, but this time I could not stabilize in time. Game three saw a second turn COP:Red followed by a turn four estate. Also my opponent got mana flooded and with my board position I could wait for my army to build and fight through his defenses. I also got a lucky verdict in the match, two Price of Progress

Round 5: Threshold Geddon

Game one saw me off to a very fast start. Turns two and three were verdicts emptying his hand. Turn four was followed with a mystic enforcer. Game two I was land light and he got rid of the few lands I had. His creatures came out in numbers and I was left defenseless. Game three saw us trading beats and creatures, but engulfing flames eliminated my regenerators and him achieving threshold for his enforcer before I drew an answer.

4-1, 7-4

runs into a few of his creatures until an enforcer with threshold seals the victory. Props to my opponent in this round for having a great sense of humor. After the COP:Red was played, he new the match was in trouble and asked me to see how much damage I could do in one turn to kill him. I did keep an estate and enforcer in my hand incase he did draw an anarchy for my white permanents, but I attacked with two enforcers and a couple of lynxes for the victory.

Verdict again gets Price of progress and I get to threshold. Enforcer joins the party and swings for the victory (after the estate was cast). Game two again saw a second turn COP:Red and I protected myself from damage until Monger came in for the victory.

6-1-1, 11-4-1

Round 9 B-U-G finkle/forbid/blessing.

Game one I get trapped in a forbid/blessing lock with finkle beating me down. Swords took out two finkles, but in the end, I ran out of ways to deal with him.

Game two sees a first turn planar void cast and thus negating the blessing from taking hold early. He does play a deed to deal with the void, but I get a Monger and a boa to resolve. Boa does the damage while monger keeps him from drawing cards with finkle.

Game three was all about early disruption. I went first turn duress, second turn verdict, third turn boa (countered) and planar void. Turn four saw a tithe for mana and a choke resolve. Call tokens then resolved and without the use of blessing or his islands I got a monger to join the party. Morphling

7-1-1, 13-5-1

Finals, John and I play against each other at the Outpost and qualifiers often and he wants the invite. We agree on a prize split and he gets the slot. My goal for the day was to make my first Top 8, and thus it was a great day for me. Congrats to John for winning the PTQ, I wish you the best of luck at the PT.

Thanks for reading. As always, questions and comments are appreciated.
