With all of the good feedback, I figured it would be good to continue my series of articles on test decks for the upcoming regional tournaments. Just to recap, combo decks were covered in article two and some of the “tried and true” decks were covered in the first article. This article tackles some of the decks that are thriving in the more established metagame since the original articles were published. This article contains decks that are more prevalent and some “rogue” decks that have to be considered when building your deck. I figured that I would pass along some “ideas” for the rogue as well as some of the established decks in the current testing group.

is for a deck relying on a majority of one color (can be very useful against a mono green deck or the blue mage if it resolves). Be careful of madness spells when you cast this card.

The plagues are for “weenie” decks that can swarm you too quickly. You can stop the rush with an aptly named plague. This also hurts the manna acceleration of a green mage.

Some Testing Results:

Testing this deck against Green/Black decks has been very encouraging as creature control can be established quickly and they don’t have a way to prevent the massive damage of the corrupts and soul burns that this deck can provide. The extra mutilate in the board helps with the creature control.

Testing this deck against beefier Red/Green decks has also been encouraging. Again the creature control can be established and again the protection against the direct damage is not there. The “Frog” type variants are more of an issue with this deck, but they seem to be falling out of favor because of their lack of a late game against the “beefier” Red/Green and Green/black decks.

Testing against Black/White decks has shown that early disruption is the key to victory in the matchup. The low creature count in the Black/White decks has proven to be in this decks favor for the removal spells. With your disruption and discard, make sure to take away their direct damage spells (Death grasp etc.).

Another deck that became popular in the extended season was “Threshold Geddon.” Granted, the deck lost the use of Armageddon

As said above, this is a “combo” deck and was made as a “Fun” deck in the test group. It also was thrown into the mix to test against the “rogue” factor at regionals and beyond. The funny thing is that if manna maze is played early that the “Win” conditions of the deck are uncounterable. This tended to give control decks fits, but also showed the weakness this deck has against a control black deck.

holds off most of the creatures from “Frog” type decks and the madness spells with the enchantment and wild mongrel can provide massive amounts of beats quickly. In playtesting this deck did have problems with mono black control (After side you can bring in your own disruption). Also Blue/White control can punish you if you overextend your resources. In a heavy Green/Red environment Monger and Deed are very useful. Deed can also rid your opponent of COP’s if they become an issue.

As you can see, I believe that the field is pretty open, but is narrowing depending on your outlook at the metagame. Decks that are leaving their mark include, Suicide Black, Mono Black Control, Frog in a Blender, Beefier Green/Red, Sligh, Domain variants, Green/Black beats, Pyschatog, Enforcer-Go, Green/Blue agro, Blue/Red/Green Madness, Junk and control. Playtesting for your tournaments is becoming narrower, but don’t forget to look outside the box (for example see the “Turbo Fog
