With an unsure environment in standard, the choice of control becomes more and more clear to me as a viable option. With the release of torment, a white card (stick with me here, I understand that for the most part white got hosed in torment) could be the defining addition to push control over the top. Reborn Hero

is not nether spirit, but the spirit is no longer in the environment either. Granted the hero requires mana to survive, but it also does not get penalized for other creatures in the deck either. This deck takes patience to master and the ability to accept damage for a couple of turns to gain control. It also forces you to think multiple turns ahead to obtain control.

doesn’t tap to attack, stops any creature without trample, and swings for victory. It also can survive a wrath/rout/deed and still give you creature advantage. The millstones are for prolonged standoffs and for the control mirror match. In the control/control matchup most times the first person to get a stone to resolve wins.

Aegis prevents instants and sorceries from damaging your dome. Remember not to tap out with this on the table. You might miss a mill or two, but remember to protect your dome at all costs. The faiths are for early creature rush. “Frog” type decks can overwhelm you, and they give you an early answer. They also survive Wrath and Rout

gets the four of slot over wrath due to the ability to act as an instant if necessary. This has proven itself useful vs. decks like opposition and combo. I have used it after an overmaster/twilight’s call to destroy the synergy of the Laquatis returning from the graveyard. I realize that some of the combo decks have lost favor, but it is better to be prepared.

These cards have multiple purposes in the deck. They help you get to the cards you need for a given situation and also help you fill your graveyard to activate the hero.

The land is at 25 because this is a control deck and you can’t afford to miss a land drop early. Also the deck does contain more white sources than nether-go decks of old, but the deck also contains more white cards than the nether –go decks of old as well.

Sideboard:

The sideboard for this deck is in constant flux due to the evolving metagame. I will discuss card types as opposed to giving a fixed sideboard for the deck. Things that have to be evaluated are the deck types you plan on confronting. In a heavy control environment things such as extra control (gainsay divert) should be looked at as well as a way to deal with opponents stones (Disenchant

Matchups:

Against “Frog” type decks, Testament of faith and early global removal are key. They have to try and win before you get to 4 mana for wrath. Absorb

helps you stabilize your life total and once you obtain control (with Aegis as well) the game is yours. In tournament play this deck is 5-1 against the “Frog” type decks.

Against beefier R/G the deck can become more controlling instead of defensive from the jump. Against frog you have to stabilize quickly or loose. Beefier R/G needs time to get the beef on the table and you then will have to opportunity to stop the beef. Wrath and rout will get rid of the manna acceleration and allow you to setup the millstone death of the opponent. Remember Rage can be “deflected” by the aegis back to the caster thus stopping the card from being used against you. I am 4-0 in tourney play against this deck type.

U/G tempo decks are similar to Frog type in that you have to “scramble” a little up front to gain control. Again Testament of Faith

BUG decks tend to tap out a lot to play their spells. Millstone

is the key to victory here. Make them deal with the stones. If you plan on seeing a lot of BUG type decks, I would suggest some bounce in your deck. They will attempt to use deeds to rid you of your stones and in response you can bounce them, thus negating the effect of the deed.

decks, add COP black to the board to stop the deck from continual beatings from the creature.

This deck seems to run consistently. Unfortunately I have lost matches due to manna flooding, but most times the manna flows smoothly. The deck takes practice to play well and patience to win. This deck will take you to time limits in many matches and thus can were on you in a long tourney.

Overall in playing this deck in tourneys (FNM etc.) the record is 26-7-5 in matches. Three of the losses were due to manna issues and two were due to poor play decisions on my part. Two of the draws were intentional and two were to ‘Tings decks were we ran out of time in the round.

As always, comments and suggestions are appreciated.
