CardShark Content - Stanley Rutkowski III (4/17/2002)

As Regionals approached, I was undecided on what deck to play. I had narrowed my choices down considerably during my play testing sessions, but still could not decide on which deck to play. Since my choice was still up in the air, I decided to go with the deck that proved well for me in the extended season, thus I choose Junk as my deck choice. Here is the final deck list for my choice:

I figured with a diverse field and the possibility of playing anything from pure beatdown, control, or big creatures with control (Via deed, vindicate etc) this deck could survive well. So off to Chicago I went.

Game three: Multiple vindicates kept his land off the table and for a period of time. His only three lands were a trio of (the City of) Brass. This coupled with an early monger and lynx kept his life total low. Then, my enforcer joined the party. Terminate

Round Three Vs R/G

Game one was over very quickly, every threat that I put on the board was removed with burn and his fast creatures swung for the death blow. This game was almost over before it began.

Game two. Game two was more to my liking. Deed got rid of his mana creatures and he was land tight for most of the game. Monger hit the table and started to take out his amassing army and eventually ensured the victory.

Game three. This is where my luck at regionals started to turn bad. I took early damage from pain lands and a few creature beats, but my removal was coming to my aid. Eventually, my side of the board was stabilized with Lynx

My first loss, but my opponent was great fun to play. I knew that one more loss would eliminate me from Top 8

2-1, 5-3

Round 4 Vs R/G After a Lunch break Round 4 Began

Game one: Even while playing both Lay of the lands in my deck, I still drew land cards for seven straight turns. This did not help my chances in the matchup. Edict saw 6 plays (3 with flashback) but it did not stop the creature rush from overwhelming me.

Game Two, I guess justice was served here. My opponent got mana flooded in this game and a Mesmeric Fiend

and lynx, so I figure I have a good blocker.

Turn Three he plays a kicked Titan with Reckless charge and tramples over for 7 (I’m at 10).

I figure that Deed is my solution so I play it on turn three and assume that I can survive the attack of the Titan and reset the board. I’m wrong as a third charge hits the Titan as well as a flashed back one to bring me to zero life.

At 2-2 I figure that my chances of advancing were pretty slim so I decided to drop and join the trial for GP Milwaukee.

1-0, 2-0

Round two Vs B/W Cleric Deck

Game one sees him get the pro creature cleric in multiples early and Anthem to pump them up. I draw no deeds or removal and eventually his army chips away at my life total. I never kept more than two creatures on the board from Edict and Vindicate

and he could always keep two pro Creature Clerics on the defensive.

Game Two was another tight match, but this time my deeds came to the show and took out his side of the table. Monger followed shortly and his life total came downward spiral.

took out his lands and kept him from getting a voice of all in his hand into play.

2-0, 4-1

Round Three Vs. BUG

Game one, my opponent is creature light and edict rids him of the few creatures he has out. I believe that he is playing the counter light version of the deck and has no way to deal with monger once it hit the table. Monger makes short work of his life total.

Game Two: An early Plague naming Wizard eliminates his card drawing via Finkle and allows me to mass an army of lynxes and elephants to swing. Eventually deed rids me of my tokens, but then monger joins the party and swings for victory.

3-0, 6-1

Round Four Vs. Domain:

Game One. I get weapon locked and eventually have no permanents on the table. His mana base was smooth and rampant growth got him to weapon manna quickly.

Game Two: Early disruption via Duress

4-0, 8-2

Round Five I.D.

4-0-1, 8-2-1

Round Six I.D.

4-0-2, 8-2-2

Top 8, This is where my luck ran out AGAIN. I am playing against a B/W Braids deck and draw land for 8 turns in a row during game one. In game two I do rid him of ¾ of his braids via vindicate and edict, but my creatures never join the party.

4-1-2, 8-4-2

Overall I think that the Junk deck is a viable choice in the current environment, but it can lack the speed to keep up with a really good draw from a R/G deck.

I hope you all enjoyed your Regionals experiences. I have to give a congrats to John from G.R. for qualifying for Nationals in Chicago. Best of luck to ya.
