With the Extended season approaching quickly, it is time to start looking at how the field is going to progress. This article will go thru a few deck choices and why the function well in the upcoming season.

Affinity:
The first deck to consider is the Affinity deck. Just like the season of “my fires deck” I will not go into the gory details of a deck that has been overly covered. With that said, you need to be prepared for this deck because it will be present. Many people have made the investment into the key cards of this deck and because it is still the dominate deck in standard, thus it allows people to participate in the extended season with minimal additional investment.

are all cards that have great symmetry with this deck and are great madness outlets that seem to scream to be included. All three of these cards have two fundamental flaws in the current metagame. The first flaw is that they tap to activate and thus need to stick around for a turn to be useful. Thus their potential advantage can be quickly nullified by the black and red removal that is abundant in the field (in mono black, red deck wins, the rock etc). Also in you factor in the “bounce” affects that are available in the field, each of these cards have a huge disadvantage in the metagame. The second flaw is that all three cards are fragile and any damage card in the red deck wins automatically eliminates your investment of manna, cards and a turn.

is another card that screams to be included. Yes this card has the potential to accelerate your deck, but the cost is very difficult to pay. All of your cards are either in the deck to be a madness outlet or to use the madness outlet. Many difficult and game changing decisions are forced upon you with the inclusion of the Chrome Mox

This deck is built with consistency, redundancy and speed all rolled into on neat package. It applies pressure and controls your opponent all in the same direction and forces your opponent to consistently find answers with limited resources.

Let’s start with the lands as they are a critical component to this deck. The 8 “fetch lands” have multiple purposes that are essential to the deck. First they increase the opportunity to draw the other useful cards in your deck by decreasing the odds of drawing too much land as this deck functions on a low land count. Second, by the fact that they are sacrifice and search they become instant fuel for your lavamancer. Most every deck in the format is going to contain some land that is open to a wasteland. Also almost every deck is going to be put on a short clock by the threats your deck contains, so any disruption is going to greatly improve you chance of gaining and keeping control of the matchup. Again the ports are in the deck for disruption of your opponent and keep you in control of the matchup.

is not your optimal play to penalize your opponent, you have multiple other choices in your deck. Seal of fire is the best 1 manna burn spell at your disposal for multiple reasons, first you get to insure that you use your manna when it is convenient for you and keep the ability to use the ports and not save your red manna for instant burn. Second, you deck does not want to keep cards in your hand so that you can optimize your use of cursed scroll, so again the advantage goes to seal of fire. Third, in cases your opponent my want to rid you of your seal of fire by making you use it with an artifact/enchantment destruction, this helps to keep them away from your scrolls. Jackal pup and mogg fanatic both put pressure on your opponent and force them to find a quick answer and with your denial with your lands, you impede that answer. The lavamancer is a repeating burn spell that is fueled by the construction of the rest of your deck.

Your Firecats are both a finisher with trample and another potential source of colorless damage if necessary to augment your cursed scroll plan of attack.

is a must sideboard card as the “life” combo deck will ruin your day. Other sideboard choices include pillage for its dual purpose of artifact and land destruction, ensnaring bridge for your potential lack of hand size and a large creature to have in the mirror matches.

This deck will show up in numbers at any extended tournament, but as opposed to the affinity deck, the most limiting factor in this deck is going to be the cost of the cards. Most of the staple cards are rares and have long passed thru the standard gauntlet, so if your tournament includes more people on a tighter budget, expect more matchups with Affinity, Mono Black or U/G Madness.

and destroy your path to victory. There are plenty of flavors for the kill card and you can switch to a creature base if necessary in your sideboard. Against some decks you can remove their graveyard (and all copies in their hand and library) but beware of the costly misdirection. This deck may need some investigation for specific metagames as discard to creature control might want different forms with RDW, or the Rock in the format. Obviously, to much control in the environment might hate out this type of deck, but as in the block season with G/U madness, this type of deck has the possibility to handle the matchup. Braids was a backup plan in block that may be a bit too slow in extended. Sideboard cards and other cards to be tested include Planar Void

, this card could be a bit of an over kill but a couple of copies could be useful, this card would be a function of people finding a way to deal with your engineered plague.

Other decks to investigate are Rock, White Weenie and U/W control, but at this point, I have not tested these enough to cover them in detail.

Good luck in your adventures, and don’t forget to test your decks.
