CardShark Content - Stanley Rutkowski III (1/15/2005)

Extended season is a lovely time when old favorites can return and rekindle your memories of the past. Just like the days of old, surprising and off beat decks surfaced in the shadow of the more known and dominate decks of the day. Below are two decks that may have slipped your mind that could show up in the extended season.

Ankh/Tide
Two of my favorite decks to play in past seasons were Ankh-Tide and Chevy Blue. With all of the removal in the extended format, a single creature kill as shown in Chevy Blue is not a sound strategy. Normal builds of Ankh-Tide are too slow for the current environment as well. That being said, if there is a way to increase the speed of the Ankh-Tide combo without unbalancing the mana base of the deck or loose the consistency. Note that speed is not necessarily increasing your own deck, but as in this case vastly slowing down the deck of your opponent.

together, you can put an unnecessary land or spell back into your library and then “opt” it to the bottom of your library.

I have left any “sacrifice and search” lands out of the deck for a couple of reasons. First, you have the potential first turn play of land and Mox (if you go first even better) and play an Ankh. With this play, you would essentially pay 5 life for a search land (one from the land and four from the Ankh). Second, you want to insure that you get to four manna (or five with Daze
