CardShark Content - Stanley Rutkowski III (5/16/2002)

I attended GP Milwaukee this weekend and had a great time. BUT, I did not do well in the main event. This article is more to pass along all the fun stuff you can do at a large-scale event. Being that the event was a considerable drive (about 700 miles round trip), we decided to leave on Thursday morning. We figure that Thursday night we would be play testing and watching the Wings play (Go! Wings! Go!) and staying up late. Why not just leave early and get a good night’s sleep in Milwaukee. The ride to the event had its share of intrigue. If anyone knows Al from this site, he should now be known as the “Monkey Man.” We were caught in a couple of traffic jams on the trip (mostly around Chicago, I don’t think that I have every gotten through that city without a delay). Al decided that he should have a little fun with the truck drivers and asked each of them if they had a monkey (BJ and the Bear). He did a few other things that I can’t publish here, but just know that I turned many shades red being the driver in the car.

Target player draws two cards. Flashback - 1U, Pay 3 life.

Round One (Awarded Bye) with my rating I was awarded one bye at the event

1-0, 2-0

Round Two, G/R.

This is normally a pretty good matchup for me. I was bitten by bad luck in two of the three games in this round. Games one and three I was able to cast rage with kicker and had not drawn a white source to play the trenches. Game three was even more frustrating in the fact that I was being beaten down by a couple green creatures and staring at two of my COP Green and two Goblin Trenches

in my hand. Between a couple bolts and a rage with kicker, I got my opponent down in life, but could not draw the final blow. Game two went true to form and I answered most of his threats and sent in the tokens for the beats.

1-1 3-2

Round Three U/G/R madness

This again took three games. Game one earthquake swept the board of his threats and let the tokens pick away at his life total until Rage with kicker won the game. Game two saw a slow start on my end and a quick start on his. He also learned from the first game and did not over extend for one of my board sweeping spells (wrath did sweep the board, but he had enough held back to slip a few threats thru my counters). Eventually his creatures ate away at my land base and he swung for the victory (sometimes saving yourself with tokens can be a hindrance). Game three saw me have counters/bounce and fire/ice to answer all of his threats. Basically I sat back and waited for 12 lands by keeping control of the board and won the game with an end of turn rage with kicker, untap, rage with kicker. Unlike round two, my deck ran like a machine this time.

2-1, 5-3

Round Four G/R

This time my deck decided that white manna is ok. Games two and three saw me get early COP’s and Aegis on the board All I had to due was keep his FTK’s and mongrels from resolving. With the two enchantments in play, counters were not used for most creatures so I seemed to always have an answer. Prophetic bolt went for the win condition with a couple rages thrown in for the finish.

3-1, 7-4

Round Five Mono red Sligh with ensnaring Bridge.

This match again went to three games. I can tell you this: the Hellbent is a beating for my deck. Game three saw four of them hitting me with me while my trench tokens could not block. This was a matchup where earthquake does not really help because of the quick beatings that it brings. Aegis stopped the burn to the dome, but eventually the pro white creatures (and lack of burn on my part) did me in.

3-2, 8-6

Changes? I would make to the deck run more wraths and run the earthquake in the sideboard. Possibly one memory lapse could be converted to an Absorb

for a “hard” counter and the life gain. I don’t think that sligh is going to be seen often. Keeping Aegis for the mirror as opposed to COP red is still a good call.

At this point my chances of day two were slim to none, so I decided to drop and play in the side events. Drafts etc were everywhere to be seen. Big events are great for this sort of thing. I ended up drafting a couple times with people I never met before and had a great time. I also had the pleasure of playing in the team sealed event on Saturday night. This was a great practice for the upcoming season. I will say that the environment will change drastically once Judgment rotates into team sealed since black is much too plentiful in the current arrangement.

So all in all is was a great time (even with my disappointing finish). I would recommend the experience to players of all levels.

Until next time, thanks for reading,
