CardShark Content - Stanley Rutkowski III (9/15/2002)

The adventure to Cleveland for the Grand Prix began with a six plus hour drive to the Tourney. Unlike Milwaukee, Al was not with us this time (sorry you could not make the journey). In the weeks preceding the event, we spent many hours testing to see what deck to play. Still, the night before we left, I was not completely sure what I was going to play. I took three decks with me to the event and I was still open to suggestions once I was at the event. I had G/U threshold, G/W madness and U/B Tog (with Zombie Infestation

). The problem with G/W madness was the fact that you can get slow draws and have issues with too many decks. The problem with G/U threshold was that the field is ready for the deck. Even with Tog you can’t hold out for the victory combo. If you add in the fact that all three decks can have issues with Wonder

Round 1 G/U threshold:

Game one sees the classic issue with the low mana base of the G/U decks, my opponent gets cut off from a color. During the game I take three points of damage during the game but his lack of blue mana is his downfall. I get to mass an army and then glory in the graveyard paved the way to lethal damage. My opponent cast a worm token, but Eshra held him off long enough to make my army. Out came the guides (making my creatures pro green) and two Roars for three spheres and two Morningtide

Round 2 G/U Threshold

In game one I couldn’t get any reclamations to deal with his flying beatsticks and my life total is drained away quickly. I did get some creatures out to apply some pressure, but his creature’s evasion made an impossible race from my end. Again, out come the guides and two worms and in come the spheres and tides.

Game two sees his army growing quickly again. This time, the reclamations appreared and I kept the flying beats from killing me. He was overwhelming me with the number of creatures and my defense were showing weakness, but then the combination of Tide and spheres held his army at bay (I was at 2 life). Then, Glory

Game three was very similar to game two except that this time I stabilized at six life instead of 2 life. Luckly, each game I saw Eshra to stop the beatings of his lone mongrel.

2-0, 4-1

Round 3 Mono black Control

In game one, I placed constant threats on my side of the board (with little on his side). Turn two mongrel with a rootwalla saved my initial creature from an Edict. Then, I “guided” him up allowed for constant some pressure from my army. At the end, out come three reclamations in come three nests.

Game two had mana issues on his side of the board and he missed land drop (turn three). This really hurt his chances of stopping my army. Turn four, he made his third land drop for a rancid earth. By that time, I cast an Arrogant Wurm

(threshold) and “guided” him up on my turn. With the guide, he could not mutilate him away and the trampling worm went the distance.

Round 4 Mono Black Braids

Game one, I kept a land tight opening hand (two lands) and he got a turn three rancid earth and a turn-four Braids. I never drew land number three, and I was locked out quickly. Out come three reclamations and in three nests.

Game two saw a quick swarm of creatures on my end. Turn two mongrel with rootwalla backup came before my arrogant wurm. The tribe swung in the next few turns for the victory.

Game three saw a turn three rancid earth and turn four braids again on his board, but this time I had the lands and nest to combat his strategy. With his plan thwarted, he abandoned the braids lock and tried to apply pressure with a couple of shades. In the meantime, a couple wurms (arrogant and two roars) joined my team of tireless tribes and squirrel tokens and Glory

Game one his creatures come out in bunches (mongooses, and wearbears) and wonder plus threshold sealed my doom. No reclamations came up, and his army quickly beat mine down. Sideboard?: Out three guides, two worms, and a brushopper. In came two spheres, in two tides, and two moment’s peace.

) and play a mongrel turn two. He played first and had an Innocent blood and edict for my mongrel and rootwalla. I do not draw land three and has rancid earth and braids in the next two turns sealed the lock.

Game two had three rancid earths and Braids early and my team did not recover from the land loss.

So with two losses and no byes, my day is over. All in all, I liked this version of the deck and I plan to play it at the PTQ at Grand Rapids, MI. The only change that I am debating is taking the spheres out of the board and replacing them with Advocates. The main reason for the change is an early Advocate has some nice tempo as opposed to the four mana necessary for the shields.

Since my day was over in the OBC, I played in the standard event at the Grand Prix. The prize was 40 revised dual lands. The tourney started late, but I decided that I could gain some points for my rating and see how Worlds affected the standard environment, so I played in the event.

In game one, he starts with a bang and force spikes my turn two mongrel. Now he has board control and counters almost all my threats as they try to resolve. In the process, he gains threshold and I can not resolve enough creatures to stops a 4/4 first strike land from sealing my doom.

Game two sees a steady rush of creatures from my end. Turn one, I played a lyrist because I thought he was packing a COP Green. Luckily, I guessed right. This time, he does not have the force spike for my turn two mongrel and the beatings begin on a more regular basis. The only damage done to me in this game was a flashed back deep analysis for extra cards for the mongrel.

Game three sees my opponent get into mana issues and his first three land drops don’t show him having a blue source. This opens the window for me to freely put out threats (without overextending to wrath). I survived the wrath by his lack of counterspells (looter with logic stopped his wrath).

Round five Tog (B\U)

Game one is over very quickly as my opponent keeps a two island hand and does not draw a black source. On the flip side, my hand is amazing (two Coasts, three rootwalla’s, a mongrel and a looter). My team came out strong (even with the first rootwalla getting force spiked) and the game ended quickly without him being able to cast his familiars.

This game came down to a lot of countering and three familiars on his side to hold off my early threats. Eventually he got rid of some of my early threats with edicts and eliminated a wonder with coffin purge. Eventually, I got a looter to resolve and dig enough into my library to get a second wonder to fly over for the win. It seamed like every turn, each of us was at the brink of winning the game (I was in great fear of hibernation with counter back up as I had to keep my counterspells for Upheaval

4-1, 9-3

At this point it was around 3 AM and I was exhausted after the last round. Add in the fact that my roommates for the night were eliminated from Top 8 and one of them was playing in the PTQ in a couple of hours, we decided to go back to the hotel for the night and get some sleep. I think it was the correct call as most of top 8 was Tog or hunting grounds and my mind was pretty much jello. I think I would have made some big-time play errors. All in all, this was a fun tourney and I really enjoyed the last match. For most of the game I was pretty sure that I was going to lose, but somehow, my luck was better that his. That’s Magic! (Well, sometimes…)
