CardShark Content - Thorin McGee (2/22/2003)

Everyone reading this article probably spends a good deal of time playing Magic in at least one of the typical tournament archetypes, myself included. My favorite format, however, is the one I first learned to play in: Multiplayer. At 2 O'clock on the morning of New Year's Day, with a friend's ´´Type 1´´ (casual) deck and about 6 other players around the table, I flipped my first cards. Many months later, after I had built my own decks and started a decent collection, I still thought tournament magic was some kind of multiplayer event, with the victor from each table moving on to the next round. The format just felt right to me, and still does.

(6 tables of 6 feeding a single champions' table for the prizes. Ahhh... If only.)

If tournament magic is a duel (DCI=Duelist Convocation International or something like that...), then multiplayer is a brawl. There are so many chances for you to get attacked, mugged, and generally picked-on before your next turn that the typical, well-honed, dueling decks are crushed in the chaos. Counterspell

-based control, the classic Red Sligh, decks which focus on ´´efficiency´´ or quickness for the win in general, all have issues in the multiplayer environment because they tend to run out of steam after one opponent. In many ways the format is more like the Limited in the sense that you will have time to cast larger, less-efficient, spells, and your weenies will be routed by someone else's monsters if you can not defend them. On the other hand, because you are building the deck with all of the cards at your disposal, that ´´inefficient´´ spell is likely to be a game-breaking nightmare which sends a cold shot of fear through your opponents' hearts. The pace of the multiplayer allows for intricate combos and expensive tricks which are too inefficient for normal play. All of this opens the door to a variety of deck types which would be ineffective in one on one competition. Your deck, your weapon, needs to be something capable of hanging around through the destruction of one opponent and into the late game where massive magic is being thrown around.

The decks that follow are four ways to hang tough in a multi player brawl. They are somewhat raw, but for this purpose they really have to be. Multiplayer magic is more subject to its own ´´metagame´´ than any other format, so winning will take more deck customization than normal. (For instance: in most circles a card like Disenhant is always usable, in others you will need to run Red Elemental Blast

in anything with mountains. Those are decisions you will have to make yourself based on what your friends/enemies are doing.) Here are four multiplayer deck designs: two essentially basic and reactive and two more dedicated and proactive, meant to give you some ideas on how to approach your opponents en-masse.

TRIED AND TRUE:
The most successful way to approach a multiplayer game of magic is to try to sit back and let your friends beat each other to a pulp, then play some large creatures with good special abilities, preferably evasion, to finish things in the end. You do this by playing a relatively defensive game early, and stopping anything sent your way so that your opponents will see each other as greater threats, and easier pickings, than you. The two decks below utilize this approach with some very big weapons for taking control of the game:

, which allow you to harm all of your opponents in a relatively small way, but reap big personal rewards. You want to use of these cards to gain early advantage with this deck, control the creatures in the game with black's removal, and then go for the win with obscenely large creatures and over-powered spells like Drain Life

DIFFERENT APPROACHES:

Another way to approach the multiplayer game is to take advantage of effects which affect everybody but you. The strategy can be risky, since you will become a target, but if the deck is good enough that may not be an issue. These decks also allow you to take a more proactive role in the game, actively going after your deck's path to victory instead of sitting back and trying to stop others. Both of these decks do this by building around a single devastating card or effect:

Threshhold G-Warmageddon

can seem really unfair, so why not abuse them yourself? The basic concept for this Green-White build goes all the way back to Ernham-Geddon decks which were tournament popular for a while. The idea is simply to keep your own mana-curve low, play out bigger creatures than your opponents possibly can on turns 3 and 4 (a 4/5 Djinn, for instance), and then destroy everybody's lands before they can deal with your big creature. In a multiplayer game you will probably need to do this more than once for the win, but it is still very possible. This version of the deck replaces the Djinn with threshold critters, especially the mystics with protections who gain flying, to take advantage of a graveyard full of lands.

While we're talking about unfair tricks in multiplayer, let’s talk about winning the entire game in a hurry: multiplayer combo! The combo in a multiplayer deck should be fun. Running a prison deck or something like it is liable to get you lynched, but a deck which destroys everything at once is a different kettle of fish. This is such a deck. It is still mostly untested, but has the potential to win a 4 or 5 player game around turn 7. In short, you abuse the Skirk Fire Marshal

l in play with four other Goblins, you can put yourself in a position to end the game in a tie if you can't win it yet: If you don't have the win locked up (probably because you haven't found either a Rune/Circle, or enough Maniacs), activate the Fire Marshall's ability to get everyone under ten Life. Now activating the Fire Marshall's ability again will kill everyone, so you have the option to end the game at any time. If anyone attempts to break your board position, blow up the world!. It's a dirty trick, but it'll sure make things interesting; and that is what multiplayer Magic is all about.
