CardShark Content - Tim Hill (2/20/2004)

I've never been good at drafting and I still don’t think I know exactly what happened. On President's Day me and a few friends got together and drafted Darksteel. I had happened to just have a case of it with me so that’s how we ended up drafting it. A few days before the draft I wasn’t really sure what I would do, what to play or if I should just snatch up some rares.
Back to a few days before the draft, I got this idea of having something
like a mini draft. So I called up a friend and had him come over... I had
opened 3 boxes to get the complete set and had 7 packs left over. These are
what we used to have our mini draft. We did it the same way as a normal
draft. We each opened a pack picked a card then just passed them back and
forth till all the cards were gone. After both his and my 3 packs were gone
we flipped a coin to see who got first crack at 7th pack, I won.

He ended up with a mono white/artifact deck. It worked pretty good he used

. I ended up drafting 3
colors, blue, green, red, with of course artifacts. I started out with all
3 colors in the deck; I know not the best idea... We played one game that
way I got crushed so I took out the blue. Once I did that the deck really
took off and stuck it to him. What’s the point to all this, the point is
this mini draft just using 2 people and 7 booster packs helped me to see how
the packs were packed. Cards that showed up that I knew would be game
winners were Echoing Courage

. Before
we started I had in mind I wanted to use the golems with affinity for forest
and mountains but they still seemed to costly to cast so I decided against
them in the real draft. I also found out just how helpful the Vulshok
Morningstar was.

Ok now on to the real draft. This was my twelfth tournament, my 4th draft
and I finally won. I think it’s mostly because of the mini draft a few days
before. So I went in with set colors to grab, green and red.

Here's what I ended up with

I knew creatures would win the game so I snatched a bunch

Lands
10 x forests
6 x mountains

This was the first time I didn’t draft any rares and just a few uncommons.
Game play is pretty easy... get the weenies out and attacks as much as one
can. With this deck I went 9 and 1 against white weenies and some version
of mono green. That’s it for drafting Darksteel use the great weenies in
the set, don't forget something with flying and try the mini draft. I think it really works and will defiantly do it again with the next set.
