CardShark Content - Tim Rodriguez (3/14/2002)

Hey, Tim here again. I thought since I’ll be writing for CardShark often, I might as well introduce myself. I’m actually 14 years old, and live in California. WOOHOO!

Ok, I’ll start this article off with Magic Puzzles. I’ll post them in every article, giving the answer to last week’s questions. There’ll be one for Novice, Intermediate, and Expert. Here’s the first of them:

::Novice Puzzle:: (An oldie, but a goodie)

, two Instants, and a Sorcery. The enemy is at zero, you are at 1.

E-mail me the answer you Novices!

::Intermediate Puzzle:: (Type II)

First Turn: Play a land, a creature, and you’re at 19.
Second Turn: Play a land, a creature, you’re at 18, they’re at 19.
Third Turn: Play a land, an instant, an enchantment, you’re at 18, and they’re at a number less than zero.

That should keep you Intermediate Players busy. E-mail me the answer!

::Expert Puzzle:: (Type II)

Nothing with turns. There is a very neat combo using 3 rarely used enchantments and a creature. I’ll give you the sets to make it a little easier. One enchantment is from invasion, one from Odyssey, one from Torment

Because my next article will be on the tourney report for my U/W deck in JSS, I’ll give you people an extra week to solve these. Anyways, on to the article for this week.

makes opponent take a whopping 10. So you can see why it slaughtered me. At end of this article, I’ll give you (v.5) of U/W Control. Back to megrim, this powerful enchantment makes your opponent say mercy. With such powerful hand control, it’s hard to believe it can lose. One of the drawbacks of this deck is, if you don’t get megrim, you could be screwed. Even with massive amounts of hand control, the opponent could manage to get out a wrath of god, or a counterspell. The deck is indeed aggressive, and is rarely played. People will hate you for playing this deck, because not only is it hard to beat (though not impossible), but it’s REALLY annoying. No deck strategies needed. Play it all the same. Get out megrim, get out guilt. They go *POP*. There are a sufficient amount of creatures for defense, and using doomsday, you can bounce your ravenous rats, to make them discard again. One of the best things about this deck is the uncounterable Coliseum. Makes opponent take 6 for each megrim. Very nice. I had to give this deck recognition, its won the last couple tourneys I’ve gone to. But where there is a will to win, there is a way. The Control Deck:

in the sideboard. Yet I think it deserves to be up, because in all my play testing, I never really used the meddling mage. If I did sideboard it in, I never got it. I use dismantling blow over disenchant because even though it costs one more mana, it’s still an instant, and has the option of its kicker: Draw two cards. That can be useful if your hand is empty. each game. So why not put it in the main deck? I sideboard the moats instead of main decking them because where I play, people do not play decks with creatures very often. The better decks have creatures, and therefore it is obvious that they weren't made where I play. So in order to accommodate, I sideboarded them. I INVITE everyone who reads this article to change the deck to fit his or her own style of playing. If you want to win, then maybe you shouldn’t change it. If you want to play it because it’s fun to play, and it’s just a game, then fit it to your needs. It’s really a decision of personal taste. So I’m taking this deck (v.5) to JSS. Hopefully if all goes well, I’ll be able to give a 1st place Tournament Report. And people, hang loose. It’s OK not to win every game. It’s GOOD not to win every game. It gives us the chance to improve. Whether for the next tourney or sideboarding for the next game in your 4th match.
