Mirrodin Block Constructed is not far away and with Darksteel having been released about a week ago, there is no reason why you shouldn’t be preparing for the Block Constructed season. There has obviously been a lot of hype about the Affinity archetype, and there has also been some talk about a Mono Green Hate deck that takes down Affinity. However, there hasn’t been much talk about Black Control, a deck that has fallen off of most people’s Standard radars but a deck that I feel has the potential to dominate Block Constructed.

One of the first cards that caught my eye was Deatch Cloud, a mana intensive sorcery that has the power to wreck the the board. For the coast of XBBB, each player loses X life, discards X cards from hand, sacrifices X creatures, and then sacrifices X lands. One of the negative parts of Death Cloud

is that it is symmetrical, meaning that it affects both players. However, this disadvantage can be countered by the use of another Darksteel card, Geth’s Grimoire, a 4 mana artifact that allows you to draw a card for every card discarded by the opponent.

Now we have the base for a control based black discard deck. Next, we must include some other black hand disruption spells. We will use another symmetrical card, Necrogen Mists

We obviously must also have a couple of win conditions. My favorite is the indestructible Myr Matrix

Finally, in all black control decks there is a tutor that can find all fo these cards. Unfortunately, no such black cards in Mirrodin Block. Being that a tutor is such a vital part of a black control deck, I searched for another color that offers this option and found it in blue. Being that most of the cards that will be tutored for, Fabricate

The deck has a lot of game against Mirrodin Block decks such as White Weenie, Affinity, and Green Hate. It is very versatile, has effective card drawing, and has an unkillable win condition in Myr Matrix
