CardShark Content - Walter Vining (7/1/2005)

Some of you might wonder why I am doing this article so close after Regionals 2005. Then again some of you might notice the importance of doing it so early after this year’s event. My reason for doing is that I went for my first time this year, and boy I got whipped soundly. So I’m going to work on a new deck all year and refine it to the point that it works no matter the situation. For all of those that went and didn’t win an invite to Nationals this is for you. For those that went and got an invite, you can still read this, but it probably won’t help you much.

Before we get to much into this let’s go ahead and look at the deck, and the type of deck, that I am working on.

to help against black and red, the two worst threats for this deck.

The next step for working on this deck is to take a look at the current top decks and analyze what I need to do to beat each one of them. Seeing as this is a weenie deck I need to get into each one of theirs life totals early and get them low into it. Stay into their life total with a swarm of creatures, and keep them as high powered as I can with the Anthems and Call to Glory

With Mirrodin rotating out, a lot of the top decks will lose a lot of power, and some such as Tooth and Nail

won’t exist anymore. So there will new threats to assess, such as mono blue and black control, and possibly green aggro. The dreaded mirror match with another weenie deck is also there. Although this won’t happen until Ravnica comes out, it is still a good idea to plan ahead now. But for now we need to look at the current top decks.

can give me protection from a big stomp so I can throw a chump block out there.

Mono Blue Control-
Threats-
Board control, Meloku's creature generation, and Keiga the Tide star. All big threats to any deck as Keiga can win a game all on its own with its go to graveyard ability. Meloku and his creature generation can shut down the fliers that I have in the deck, and produce more than I can handle giving me a threat that I can't take now.

Solution-
Again, the Samurai of the Pale Curtain

helps with this as Keiga 's ability wont trigger if she’s in play. Against Meloku, half of my fliers are samurai and therefore won’t die, but I have those in limited numbers so it’s not a total fix. My speed with creatures helps me out against the counters that this deck probably runs, and post Mirrodin I won’t have to worry about the shackles.

Mono Black Control-
Threats-
Discard for hand control. Big creatures. Creature destruction on a global level. Recursion of larger threats. Kokusho and life drain.

Solution-
Keep the creature count high, and the hand level as empty as possible. The one card that black control runs that hurts this deck the most is Hideous Laughter

and generate just as much of a threat to him. Like blue control, Kokusho is a large threat, but with samurai fliers and the Pale Curtain this graveyard effect won’t hurt me.

Green Aggro-
Threats-
Large creatures fast. Creature power boost. Trample.

Solutions-
Just be faster. Weenie has the speed advantage over any deck with large counts of creatures on the table they have to respond to. The ability to bump creatures’ power with cards like Blanchwood Armor

is easily countered by Tersahi's Grasp. The trample, with samurai in play the damage that I would take is reduced a little, and again Eight and a Half comes in and helps me with prevention of damage. Biggest threat from Green beatdown is Kodama of the North tree. Can't do anything about that other than block with a blessed breath on a creature.

Ponza-
Threats-
Fast damage. Direct damage to creatures. Fast creatures.

Solution-
I think part of the solution here is to wait for Mirrodin to rotate out. One threat from Ponza is the Slith Firewalker

Sligh-
Threats-
Speed.

Solution-
As sligh is basically a red weenie deck – it’s got the same goals as me. The problem with sligh is that it also runs direct damage to back up its goblins. Some of the best direct damage spells right now will rotate out after Ravinca becomes legal. But the Ire is still a large threat with most of Kamigawa block's direct damage being arcane.

I’ve covered a lot of decks in this article. Now it’s time to go play the deck against a few of these, and play it at FNM events to see how it fares in a casual tourney setting. I will report back later with results from that, and changes that are done to the deck as I make them. Till then remain free of toasters and thanks for reading another fine toasted article.

[Editor’s note: That was meant as a joke, he apparently goes by the name of Toasterfree. Just so you guys didn’t think he had lost his mind or something.]
