CardShark Content - Wenhao Xia (2/16/2004)

I’ve been too sick these past two weeks, and haven’t been able to write up as much article as I would like. But I’m just glad to be back among the living again.

The first time I saw the Isochron Scepter

was when it previewed as one of Mirrodin’s new cards. That seems so long ago now… and I still have trouble finding a use for in standard.

While the Scepter was nothing short of amazing in extended play, it lacked the same amount of power in the standard environment. This seems to go against logic, as whatever is good in extended should obviously be better in the standard environment, where few broken high powered cards exist. This is due to the fact that Isochron Scepter

, what it requires is either 1) A way reliable way to get the Scepter in play and a reliable way to have something to imprint, or 2) Having another way to win if the Scepter does not show up, in a way, it’s almost like using the Scepter as a extremely strong support card. I have came up with two very different (and I mean very very different decks based on both of these concept, the deck below is based on concept number 2, of using the Scepter more like an extremely strong support card.

And without further ado, here’s the deck list…

, it will be the death of you if you keep trying to metamorphose it. Don’t be afraid of the bidding, all you have to do is counter it with a mana leak. (Make sure to keep one in hand if you’re facing goblin bidding, it’s kind of hard to counter a bidding if you don’t have a mana leak…)

U/W 45%-65%
I don’t think this match up is your favor, but I don’t think it’s unwinnable. While you should definitely attack aggressively, don’t overextend into a wrath or a vengeance. A scepter is incredibly helpful in this match, especially with Metamorphose

, then you pretty much have won the game.

This deck is not an easy deck to play, it takes a lot of practice not add fabricate for the Scepter and to use a boomerang for pure tempo. Try this deck out if you’re tired of all the same things in Standard. If you really want something interesting though, wait for my next article and see my second take on Isochron Scepter
