I am writing this article to explore a new deck type I have been experimenting with lately at my local card store, Red/White control. The deck takes advantage of the many board-sweeping effects that red and white provide, as well as spot removal. The goal is to control your opponent’s side of the board through creature removal until you can power out your own win conditions, either a large flyer or through Searing Meditation

takes advantage of this by turning our life gain into damage to our opponent creature destruction.

The deck list I present in this article is the one that I am currently playing with. Many of the card choices were made due to budget constrictions, although it is not fair to call this a budget deck (it would cost around $65 to make, which to many would put this out of the budget category). I will include an explanation of all the cards I chose, as well as a list of alternatives that I would have liked to include if money were not an issue.

and Ryusei – These are the two main win conditions for the deck. Once your opponent’s creatures are under control these two can be brought out to finish the game. Firemane is amazing in this deck since the amount of life you gain with him can easily swing a close game in your favor, as well as his ability to come back late game and finish your opponent off. Ryusei is great, but he is a budget choice. Alternatives will be discussed below.

s are extra aggro protection, and the 2 Boseiju are in to help against an opposing control deck, plus Wayfarer can fetch them.

Now I want to address the weaknesses of this deck, and ways that it can be improved (i.e., how to put more money in the deck). Obviously, the biggest problem for this deck is card draw since there is none. Playing this deck can be frustrating because you are at the mercy of the topdeck all game. Lack of card draw makes this deck especially vulnerable to hand disruption, a well-timed Persecute

can wreck us. One way to fix this would be to include Sensei’s Divining Top. However, Because of budget reasons I have not playtested with them. Also, because there are no deck-shuffling effects beyond the Wayfarer I think the top would not be as effective as it is in other decks. Another big problem for this deck is Jitte, but between Faith’s Fetters in the main deck, all the creature control, and the sideboard, it usually isn’t much of an issue.

Now I would like to move on and address ways in which the deck could be improved. One of the biggest weaknesses is the mana base. With more money the new shock lands and the 9th edition pain lands could be included, as well as Tendo Ice Bridge

(which has nice synergy with the Garrisons). If I could I would probably put Yosei, The Morning Star in for Ryusei, but they are just so much more expensive and the Ryusei effect is almost better in this deck since it helps sweep the board. Lastly, it would make sense to play Wrath of God
